Chapter 12 - The Big Dog and Trading Orders

Chapter 12 - The Big Dog and Trading Orders

We ran toward the howling.

People were already running from there. It was chaotic. People running, children were crying. And still, the howling somehow was louder than anything, freezing our soul with that terrible noise.

And then, we arrived.

A giant wolf. It was bigger than the last time I saw him. Its claws were different, crystal-like. Its fur was spiked, and had a blue tone to it. It was thrashing a house, looking for some prey to hunt.

Decided to quickly finish it I extended my hand toward it and gathered mana.

“ZERO ZONE!” I screamed, and ice engulfed the wolf. I used way more mana this time. No way would he still be alive.

We approached it.

“Did you get a message? Did we kill it?” asked Ur. He was quite worried and looking at the destruction around, he was right to be.

“No messssage. Maybe it hasss a delay?” I hope I was right.

The ice cracked, making a loud noise. It seems today was not our day.

Seeing this, we all took some distance. And we activated Mana Eyes.

The ice mana was flowing inside. Towards the wolf.

The damn beast was absorbing it.

It seems it would be a fight. I looked at the others.

“This will be hard. Three mages and a magic absorbing wolf.” Ur wasn’t motivated

“Let’s try with fire. Maybe he has a weakness to it.” Luna seemed more agitated.

Lucky for us, Ur was focusing in Fire Magic. He took out his black axe, and activated his magic.

The flames he summoned reacted with the axe, and some flames turned black. It was some kind of magic armor. Black flames engulfed his arms while his legs were still covered with red flames. It had a nice visual to it.

Since the flames didn’t cover his whole body, it was safe to assume that it wouldn’t give a defense increase. Maybe speed and attack boost, if I was correct. But the black flames may have some kind of bonus, so he got that going for him. I hope it has.

Luna summoned some fireballs. They were floating around her ready to strike at her command. And looking at the frown she had, she was ready to cast more if needed. She summoned her claymore too. Maybe she wanted to be prepared if she had to engage the wolf at melee.

And me? Well, I suck at fire magic. The only I know is the Warm Wave. And its usage was more for daily usage than to battle.

Shrugging away the image of a small imp, trying to boil a leg of a giant wolf, I used the Poison Sphere. And started to gather some mist. I couldn’t be directly attacking, but maybe I could support the other two.

Summoning my dagger, I quickly climbed to one roof. I will be trying to stealth attack it.

Luna saw me climbing, and nodded, figuring out my plan. She knew how bad I was with fire. Ur was warming up, so he didn’t saw me. The wolf was still absorbing the ice.

The first to attack was Luna. She transformed three balls into bolts, and shot the wolf. A big yelp was heard. She gave a thumbs up. He didn’t absorb the fire. And the rising temperature melted the remaining ice, stopping the wolf from absorbing it

Ur began to run to it. I sent the poison sphere, together with mist, and targeted its eyes.

Let’s just say it wasn’t happy. The poison seemed to hurt it, and he lost most vision with the mist. Ur zeroed in and swung the ax down.

The wolf noticed the attack and quickly jumped back. It still had some working senses.

It started to gather mana at its mouth. A breath attack. And shot a freezing ray.

Luna sent a lot of balls and made a barrier with it. Then the attack connected.

A huge amount of mist appeared. The sound of sizzling water filled the place. Ur suddenly jumped out of the mist and got a hit on the wolf’s front paw. He was unscathed, the barrier canceled out the attack. But looking at Luna, I saw that she used a lot of her balls stock. She was already summoning more, but wouldn’t be able to defend so soon.

Ur tried a horizontal swing, but the wolf jumped up and behind Ur, where it tried to attack him.

Getting an idea, I quickly extended my mana toward the wolf. It was an almost pure ice mana. I pulled it and was able to make it miss the attack, and Ur quickly jumped away, turning around to face it again.

And now the wolf was glaring at Ur, meaning its back was totally open to me.

I coated the dagger in poison and jumped down, stabbing its back paws. If he hadn’t noticed me before, now he did. He quickly turned to me, trying to bite. But I was able to dodge, and ending up below its jaws.

It made a huge mistake. Ur swung his ax and got a clear hit on its side. Blood was freely pouring from it. Luna was not behind, and fired the rest of her bolts. That made the wolf scream in pain. The impact of both attacks made the wolf fall.

Seeing the huge opening I quickly clawed its neck. Coated with poison, it was a lethal attack. And it finally stopped moving.

Ur fell down. He was dead tired. Luna seemed to have a migraine from magic over usage.

My hands were totally covered with blood, and it reached to my arms. My clothes were in similar state.

A sudden panel appeared before me.

Congratulation! You defeated the Leech Wolf (for real now)Leech is a rare variant from wolves, born when a wolf absorb a large amount of mana

Oh. I did create the wolf. But no one needs to know that. And I’m just gonna ignore the goddess remark.

Envy’s Boon ActivatedPlease, select the ability you wantMana AbsorptionIce Attuned

I chose Mana Absorption. It seemed like the best option. The attuning I may get in the future, from training my magic.

A yellow light enveloped the Leech, and formed the image of a wolf. I heard the gasps from both Luna and Ur behind me, but was astounded by the wolf.

It walked toward me and blasted in dust that was absorbed by me.

And it was hella painful.

It was worse on my hands and in my mouth. A migraine sudden began. The pain was enveloping me, and it felt like it was trying to burn me.

With the pain still increasing, I finally passed out.

When I woke up I was in a bed.

It was a simple room, but the amount of white screamed ‘infirmary’.

Aphrodite was beside me. She was stunningly pretty. Her blond hair was tied in a ponytail, and it was resting on her shoulder. Her eyes were closed in concentration. Her arms were extend above me and chanting something that sounded like a pray. And some light particles were falling into me. She was healing me.

Ok, I would never ever judge anyone by their appearances ever again.

Feeling that I woke up she opened her eyes. Clear blue eyes.

“You’re finally awake!” She was smiling “I’m gonna call your friends, they are dying to see you”

She got up and walked to the door. Not gonna lie, even from behind she’s beautiful.

Luna, Piper, Ur and Broox quickly entered as she left.

“What. The. Hell. Happened?” Piper was apparently not happy.

“I already told you Piper. Wolf hunt. Yellow spiritual wolf appeared. He absorbed.” Ur rolled his eyes.

“Yeah, I heard the first time. His version now.” She was not amused by his answer.

So I told what happened from my side.

When I reached the part that the boon activated, Luna and Ur made that expression of ‘I got it’. Seeing as the other didn’t get it, I left both of them to explain it and looked in a mirror.

I had changed more than I first thought.

My eyes had a normal sclera now, but the irises were yellow. My face had a somewhat feral look to it, and the teeth were clearer sharper. My hair grew a little, and looking at my hands, there was something that looked like pads, but really small. And my horn had grown a little.

I got up, wanting to see how the village was after the attack.

But something made me stop.

I was a little higher than before. The Envy’s Boon gave me a slight increase in height.

Yeah, I know what you may think. ‘No, it’s just in my head’, and ‘there’s no way it can happen’ and so on. But I created this body, so I knew it from my toes to the tip of my horns and

I was somewhat taller. A few centimeters, two or three I guessed. Nothing to brag about.

And it brought something to mind, something I thought I had dealt with.

I missed being taller. Being a very short humanoid was troublesome, but there was no way to change it. Except, now there is. I really would need to look at it in the future.

After having my moment, I asked the others what had happened after the battle.

They explained to me that I passed out after I absorbed the yellow wolf, and that I spent the whole day resting. Today would be the day we would go back, but the attack made us delay our plans. A message was sent to the monastery, telling what happened and requesting help to fix the village. Also, some traders had arrived, and they said they were helping around. We were not the new faces anymore.

That’s also why Aphrodite was healing me, since all the trained healers were helping out the injured from the Wolf attack, and they still didn’t trust us enough to help.

After some minutes of talk Aphrodite came back and kicked everyone out, and screaming something about no patient walking around. According to her I wasn’t completely healed yet, and I had to take some rest. She even stared daggers at me, saying that I was allowed to walk around.

And with that, I went back to sleep.

...

As if.

I waited to Aphrodite to go out and escaped through the window. I wanted to see what happened on the battle scene.

When I reached the place (going on the roofs, of course) some people were still rebuilding it. They saw me, but it looked like they had more to do than bickering over a small demon. Only some of them looked like they never saw demons before. I guess these were the traders. But they soon joined the rebuilding.

From what I saw, three houses were completed destroyed, and two were half destroyed.

The strange thing was that no ice was seen; only some burn marks. It probably melted during the day.

It was strange that where an ice creature attacked, only fire remained.

With nothing else to do there, I went back to the infirmary, praying that I didn’t make the nurse get angry.

It was silent there, and it didn’t took too long before I truly fell asleep.

When I woke up it was the middle of the night. There was another nurse here, taking care of the patients. He saw me waking up and brought me a cup of water. It had some sweet taste to it.

I rested my head at the pillow, waiting to be fully awake.

But then the healer started to touch my Status Plate. It looked like he was putting something at it. I tried to protest, but my head felt very light.

Something was odd.

I couldn’t move at all. My vision was getting blurry.

The nurse called someone, and another guy came in. he looked somewhat familiar. He picked me up and gave something to the nurse. I heard some laughs and he exited the building.

And took me to a nice stroll at the forest. Except it was not nice. And I had no other choice than going.

There were some carts where he took me. There were others, but the drug was showing its full effect, and I couldn’t really recognize anything. But still, during the walk I discovered why the guy was familiar. He was one of traders helping at the reconstruction. And it didn’t make any sense of why they were kidnapping me.

The guy took me to the back of the carts. There were some sacks there, full of whatever he was selling. But he went deeper on the cart.

He lifted a cloth up, revealing a cage. And threw me there. Very rude, in my opinion. He said something and got out of the cart.

The ‘nice’ impact, at least cleared my mind, and I was able to look around. And I saw a woman in another cage. And a guy. And other. And a small child. Five people at total, including me.

And this made me notice what these traders were really selling. People.

These people were Slave Traders.
