Chapter 28: The Giant

A wailing siren caught my attention, ringing out in the air from the direction of the capitol. Lights were slowly being shut off, as the city started fading away into the landscape. The civilians were probably rushing to hide from the sounds of the approaching of war.

The bomber planes began crashing into the ground below, billowing fireballs erupted into the sky.

One. Two. Three. Four.

Their destruction lay a couple of kilometers from the city walls. Shadows could be seen stampeding through the farm fields at incredible speeds. Ejection seats were spotted rocketing away from many of the stalled fighter aircraft.

With no time to think, I lifted up the spear.

Swing.

An arc of energy sliced through the air, rushing to split the land at the front of the rushing tide. The whistling and screaming drowned out the wailing siren in the distance, finally disappearing into the ground on the vanguard of monsters.

Silence engulfed my ears.

The ground suddenly split open, and the rumbling echoed passed me. Dirt geysers rose into the sky along the scar imprinted onto the land.

But Vengeance failed to inflict damage.

The beasts quickly scrambled out of the dust cloud, roaring forward.

The towering stone walls lit up, as an array of red beams were launched in unison, colliding with the front-line of beasts.

But the horde was vast, pressing on, reaching closer to the walls. They began leaping into the defenders at the top of the wall. Their brute strength crumbled the stone, breaking chunks as they stormed the wall. Bodies were seen flying into the night sky.

I slapped my cheek, snapping me back to reality, and propelled myself towards the battle.

Lightning streaked in my wake, as I funneled more power into myself. The walls were quickly overwhelmed, engulfed entirely by beasts, spilling over into the city.

The situation was becoming dire. I remembered one of the experimental weapons I wanted to try.

I had no time to waste. I moved purely on instinct, letting my intent flow into my fists.

The air compressed, as I sped along the wall, tentacles whipping at breakneck speeds into the tide. The vibrations of flesh entered my hands, shaking them numb.

Screeching to a halt in midair, I turned around and rushed in for a second pass.

Small shadows lept towards me, as I weaved around them striking destruction along my path. Corpses were piling up, as the beasts violently kept on stampeding into the wall. Rampaging over each other in a rush for blood.

A wave of dread reached my neck, as I turned, seeing a knee reach my face, cracking my mana shield and sending me flying over the wall.

Tumbling in the air, I collided through multiple houses half destroyed by the horde.

I found myself laying on my side, where I came face-to-face with a… demon?

Thick horns protruded from its forehead, with dark tinted skin, eyes black as night.

I quickly stood up, shaking off the whiplash. Its wings are shaped like a bat, with spines extending out, up to a meter in length. Sharp claws adorned its hands and feet.

This was the true demon form.

The corpse may have stood three to four meters in height, but those things back at the wall had appeared much larger.

Two demons suddenly flew overhead, zooming back towards the wall. The war cries from the defenders were dying down, replaced by the savage hunger of the demons.

The debris on the ground began shaking from further in the city, as a deep rumble of stomps grew louder.

More demons were flung back towards the wall.

I quickly launched myself high into the air. It was only for a moment, but I caught a glimpse of a giant's face flash by me.

The enormous blur sent a whirling gust of wind pushing me to the side, and it quickly leapt over the wall.

Waves of demons were sent flying in every direction, cresting over the wall.

A legion of blue aura came running in, lagging far behind the blur. They continued forward immediately clashing with the demons overflowing into the city.

Trailing behind was a dual column of horses galloping forward. The destroyed houses glowed green, as an onslaught of beams aimed for the top of the wall.

Crackling reverberated in all directions as the electrical currents whizzed below me. Explosions rang out, erupting along the perimeter.

It's working! The dense wave of demons feels lighter. Scrambling over to the opposite side of the wall, I targeted those demons climbing up.

Tentacles were released, slithering and striking each demon in my sight.

Up ahead, there he was, as tall as the city wall. Hammer the size of a multistory house, resting on his shoulder. He was focused on something.

Suddenly, he flung backwards, quickly growing bigger in size.

Shit!

The giant was flying straight for me at incredible speed. I lifted my palm and stretched out its silhouette to ridiculous proportions. Holding steady, ready to catch.

Contact was made with the immovable force raging into my palm. Slamming me backwards, I focused all my energy on propelling forward. Shockwaves blasted out from the kinetic energy boiling the air. A swath of unlucky demons exploded from the pressure.

The resistance finally died out, and I released my hold on the giant. He slammed to the ground shaking the crumbling wall.

I lifted up my spear, engorging it with my remaining mana, and propelled myself over the towering head in front of me.

As I creeped over his head, a second towering figure was in full sprint, heading straight for us.

"I got this," I shouted below.

In my best attempt, I thrust the spear forward aiming straight for its midsection.

It was a monstrosity of a demon. It attempted to block my attack, but the spear sliced straight between the demon's forearms.

Instantly, guts and purple blood showered in all directions. A gaping hole separated his upper and lower halves. The towering demon's remains slammed to the ground, trembling the city wall and causing a total collapse.

Out into the distance, an explosion soared into the heavens, lighting up the city.

"Oh ho ho, nice shot!" Belly laughter thundered in my ears, with my whole body vibrating from the low tone of his voice.

Before I could react, his body blurred back down the wall, exploding body parts flying in his wake.

The war cries of humans reached my ears. We must be winning the battle!

I crested over the wall, only to find another giant demon. Blue aura was swirling in the air as bodies were sent flying in wide sweeps.

It squatted down, and pounced into the air. The enormous blur flew in behind it, smashing its behemoth hammer to the back of its skull, crushing its whole head. Both giants slammed into the ground, causing an earthquake. Houses were shaking, debris falling and tumbling, as the horses and defenders began to collapse from losing their footing.

The shaking subsided, as the giant man lay flat on his back, blood coating his face, raising one arm, and proclaimed, "Victory!"

His voice rumbled throughout the city. The soldiers were rising to their feet and roaring.

"""Victory!"""

Only I knew the war wasn't over yet. The black goo was still out there, somewhere. I headed straight up just before reaching the clouds, scanning the land for the massive blob I had seen before.

I connected myself to the mana streams flowing above the clouds. The pressure around me mounted, drawing in a swell of clouds. Gathering together, growing in size, as lightning danced across the atmosphere, thundering into the city.

The giant below noticed something was wrong. He worked his way to his feet, glaring at me, with a deep gaze that reminded me of the King’s.

In my peripheral, I spotted something crawling in the city on the western edge. Quickly flying overhead, I found the wall had been breached with a round shape dissolved through the wall.

A trail of destruction was etched into the path of the goo, crawling straight for the floating castle. I quickly launched a fireball in its direction, as it ripped through the air, with the ray tracing behind lighting up the city red. It dove deep into the demon blob and… disappeared?!

A pure mass of darkness, eater of light. Ignoring my attack and speeding up, it soared through the buildings, gobbling everything in its path, as cries of the civilians began echoing in the air.

Diving down with tremendous speed, fire erupted in my wake, as a wave of compressed air boomed into the atmosphere. I aimed my spear straight at the center of darkness, guiding a tsunami of mana into the tip of my blade.

One hundred meters.

Fifty meters.

Ten meters.

One millimeter.

Just as the spear was about to penetrate, the blob opened a hole and grabbed the spear. The destructive power instantly fizzled out, as the spear froze in place. Hanging on, I could feel the mana in the air weaken.

Four spikes erupted from the goo, stabbing me in each limb.

“AHHHH!” The pain caused me to release my grip on the spear, barely hanging onto the shaft with my armpit. A fifth round blob punched me in the stomach, launching me away.

My vision was blinded by pain. I tried to catch my breath, but air was nowhere to be found. Needles shot up my back, as I collided through several buildings.

I felt the world spinning, I could not tell if I was moving or frozen on the ground. I begged for the mana to repair my body, as I lay motionless with my eyes shut. My eyesight was slowly returning, but the world was blurry, with a pounding headache hammering in my head.

A blur flashed above me, and soon after, explosions and rumblings reverberated in the air. Rays of green and red filled my view, crackling and ripping through the air.

Looking down at my legs, giant holes were pierced through both my thighs. The pain instantly shot up my spine. I tried to lift my arms, but they were limp. Gritting through the agony ripping through my nervous system, I turned to my side, trying with all my might to sit up.

A loud thump reached my ears, followed by a giant body arcing high in the air. The massive bulk began to grow bigger!

Not again!

I grabbed my silhouette and slid my body backwards, scraping myself with debris.

The giant man crashed right next to me, bouncing me from the shockwave reverberating the ground, knocking me flat on my back.

*Looks like-" he choked on his words, stuck in a coughing fit, causing the remaining structures still standing to crumble, "-my dad will have to help after all."

As we both lay there defeated, a bright shine emanated from the floating castle. The surrounding destruction lit up, casting dark shadows. The increasing brightness permeated the world, blinding me.

"And there he-" the giant lost consciousness.

I wasn't in any better condition. Exhaustion filled my bones…
