Chapter 27: War starts now

There must be over a hundred lights shimmering in the horizon. Launching a nuclear attack might be too dangerous this close to the city. Who knows what threats lie inside their formation. Perhaps I should send a warning shot to see what happens?

I had unconsciously brought in a tsunami of mana, where a ferocious storm crackled and boomed in my wake. There is no doubt they know I'm here.

Terrible idea coming from you demons, outside in the open air, where I have the advantage. Although, I too must be cautious of the dragons, the unknown element in their ranks. They are spoken about as a respected race, which provides a hint of their strength.

Boom, BOOM

The lightning was growing more violent, but it didn't matter, no, I needed overwhelming might. Perhaps their war would be righteous if they used the princess as a motive, but no, they decided to make it a holy war.

Demonus Temples appear to be a gateway for the darkness to gain a stranglehold on the light. I still don't fully understand what that means, but hopefully this war will provide insight sooner than later.

Enough of the rambling, I need to focus on the enemy close ahead. The city is now behind me, still glowing below.

I conjured up a pebble of heavily compressed mana, focusing it to create a ray of light and explode above and behind their formation.

Pausing in the air, I stood tall, zeroing in on a trajectory.

I raised my arm, extending my finger gun gesture.

Sounding out the cocking of an imaginary hammer, as I released the warning shot, "Click!"

The tiny mass bolted away coloring its path a bright red and orange, with exploding waves of air reverberating away.

The howling stone raced above the brigade of planes, slicing a route straight to their six o'clock position.

A brilliant light enveloped the world, turning night to day. The planes came into full view, a handful of them were multiple times the size of the others. Flapping wings were also seen distributed in the mix.

Time slowed to pause in that instant. But, suddenly a fireball erupted at the origin of light, expanding out, as the screaming explosion reached my ears.

BOOOOOOM!

Ripples of green flared out violently from the formation, perhaps a shield barrier created by the dragons?

I have made the first move. What will they do now? Continue forward or retreat?

Staring closely at the lead plane, it made no adjustments to its heading.

So… They are committed to this battle. Very well.

I focused on generating an array of a hundred violently compressed mana pebbles in front of me.

The glow danced ominously in the air, as their formation stretched over a mile in length. The night sky grew a red hue, preluding the destruction to come.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

Again, I clicked my tongue and launched a full blown attack. The swarm of magic missiles launched ahead, as a hundred rays of light marched forward, coloring the land and sky red.

Immediately the planes scattered in all directions, racing to avoid the incoming onslaught. But it only took a moment, before the stones reached into the demon formation.

The sky grew a blinding white, as a torrent of eruptions thundered in the air. Witnesses may think it's the end of the world, but no, it is the end of demons.

The blinding light slowly subsided as smoldering planes were seen falling out of the sky like flies. Smaller force fields were glowing a bright green, holding strong, protecting the larger planes. That must be their main attack force.

Just what are they planning to launch?

Oh well, it does not matter, it must all be eliminated.

A swell of mana built up next to one of the bombers. The hairs on my arms stood up. It was a dragon's breath!

The author's narrative has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

I immediately formed a shield of my own and swiftly dodged to the right. A surging blue beam rushed towards me, striking the shield. Crackling echoed through the shield, piercing my ears. A thick layer of ice built up on my hardened mana, with a cold vapor gushing out

I quickly shedded away the affected part of the shield and propelled myself towards the source of this attack.

I needed to pierce through their durable shield, something that was more surgical to use in close proximity.

As I approached closer, I stretched out a line of mana, in the form of a spear, reinforcing the structure by folding the mana on itself again and again. Streams of mana gushed forward, strengthening the durability further as it continued compressing together.

The bright shaft glistened, as purple rays struck out from its silhouette, the blade grew in size slowly giving form as the mana hardened to its final lozenge shape.

A new spear was born, shining with a white elegance.

The cries of people invaded my mind, filling their darkest pasts into me, with two final words etching themselves deep into my own soul, "Save us!"

My heart throbbed. What have I done?! Using mana like it meant nothing. Each absorption was eating away at my own people, perpetually trapped in the Sea of Feelings.

This spear is a culmination of the lost souls from my era.

I must, no I will dedicate this spear to be the guiding post for all of our lost civilization. I grabbed onto the shaft, feeling the weight of all the sacrificed souls etched into its form. It was lighter than expected, but the dense memories which reached into my heart, began weighing me down mentally.

Only one word came to mind.

Vengeance

This will be its name.

Rapid shots from multiple bogeys soared towards me, as I weaved to avoid wasting mana on protection.

My eyes were locked onto the target diving down closer to the earth. Speeding up, I could now see the enormous dragon protecting the much more massive plane, larger than our usual B52 bombers.

Without hesitation, I raised the spear up high, filling it with more mana, focusing at the tip of its point.

Clink, clink, clink, CLINK.

A few rounds were hitting my shield.

I'm sorry my lost friends, please help us win this war to save everyone.

Swing.

A straight line cut through the air, as if slicing through the space-time continuum itself. The shield was no match, as the dragon was chopped in half diagonally.

The small mountain sitting behind suffered the same fate as the instant destruction boiled the rock, spawning lava, erupting in all directions. Only the tail of the massive bomber plane was cut, sending it into a spiral nosedive straight into the ground.

The eerie sound of vibrating metal echoed in the air. As the rumbling chaos from the mountain reached my ears.

My nerves grew stiff, something was not right.

Beams of massive light spawned from the other dragons, locked onto my position.

I flung myself straight up, as an assortment of colorful rays followed me, screaming as they slowly shaved my shield away. Brushing closer to me.

Just then, I locked my eyes on the crashed bomber's location as the engulfing fire was immediately extinguished.

A glowing black goo, rushed out growing in volume, towering over the surrounding trees.

What in the world?!

The onslaught of attacks towards me subsided, as I searched for the other bombers.

The enemy was continuing forward, towards the city.

I rushed in behind one of my targets diving in from above. As I became one with the spear, aiming straight for the center of the plane, sharpening my form to strike at a singular point.

Breaking straight through the shield, as the tip of the spear made contact with the hull of the bomber, piercing the steel like butter, and driving me completely through the interior and popping out the other side in an instant.

The kinetic energy must have been violent, as the bomber instantly exploded, vaporizing the entire plane.

I peaked at the dragon protecting the aircraft, and saw a familiar scared face.

"Kamira?!" I yelled out.

"Joe?!" A reply echoed into my mind.

"Why are you all siding with the demons?!" My anger was escaping.

"W-We had no choice! Y-y-you wouldn't understand," She was struggling to mind speak.

I was getting distracted, as I turned towards the remaining targets.

Shit! The bomber's bellies were open!

Just then, all the planes in the sky had their lights instantly shut off.

The bombers and fighter aircraft began losing control. But something continued falling out of the enormous planes.

"Kamira, leave this place!" I warned her, as I jettisoned closer to one of the disabled bombers.

Bodies in the hundreds were falling out of the planes. Why were they dropping people? They were not moving, just flailing from the wind, as they fell from the sky.

Were they already dead?

Just then as if something triggered them, glowing red eyes shined brightly from the hundreds of bodies.

Their shapes were twitching and violently flailing. Suddenly they began morphing, growing larger, with spikes stretching outward, shimmering against the glow of the city.

This instantly went from bad to worse. Each one of those is becoming a monster!

The dragons lifted up high into the sky and began turning around. Perhaps they fulfilled their mission?

Whatever, run away.

I needed to remain focused on these monsters.

Deronus will soon be overrun, and civilians will be at the mercy of these beasts.

I must warn the King!
