12 - The Path to walk

Sarah looked curiously at the prompt, not quite sure what to expect now. This part about the omnipotent wish sounded really amazing. But it was kind of hard to believe. A wish that would grant anything? Something like this just didn’t exist. But what she could believe was the part about ‘Class’. She had long wondered what this ‘Class’ part in her Status Screen meant. But the system has stayed silent about that until now.

"Shit." Sarah grabbed her head and groaned. The system already evaluated her as "Slightly crazy". Not only that, her race was now "Mutant". And even though the system helped her survive in this swamp, it had a horrible and sadistic humor.

"Please be something… normal?" She begged the system, not really believing that it would listen to her. But she had to try.

Path of Conflict:

* Witch

* Swamp stalker

* Abomination

* Nightmare

* Lunatic

Please choose carefully.>

Sarah sat down and despondently held her head in her hands. "These are all insults, you know?" she said to the ever-silent system, thinking that she should have known better. "But seriously? Abomination?"

She took a deep breath, took her hands off her face, and looked at the Classes again with empty eyes. She had no idea what to go with. But at least there were also some descriptions of the classes.

Path of Conflict:

* Witch: Focus on Magic Power and Invasion specializations.

* Swamp stalker: Focus on Mutation and Poison Body specialisation.

* Abomination: Focus on Life Force and Body affinity.

* Nightmare: Focus on Life Force, Invasion and Mutation specializations

* Lunatic: Focus on inborn skill Slightly Crazy and Invasion specialization.

Please choose carefully.>

Even though there were some descriptions, they seemed cryptic to her. What was this focus exactly? Would it make just these Stats and specializations stronger? Would it change them? She had no way of knowing.

She had to guess that "Nightmare" was her best option. It focused on three different things instead of two like the other classes. And it also focused on two specializations with different affinities.

She was kind of suspicious that the system would place something so good in front of her nose. It was a little bit scary, to be honest. What if something painful happened to her, or if her body deformed even further?

"Oh well, not that I have a chance. I guess it shouldn’t be too bad." She said to encourage herself, not believing her own words. "I choose Nightmare. But please don’t hurt me." She politely said to the system, which immediately came into action.

Sarah screamed in anger and frustration as she saw the system wishing her good luck in surviving. She already wanted to swear at the system, when the mutations hit her.

Her whole body was mutating this time. It felt like she was melting and splitting apart at the same time. But she lay still on the ground, trapped in her body that wouldn’t listen to her anymore.

Sadly, she didn’t pass out because of something like this anymore. She tried really hard, but it just didn’t work.

After some time, the agony subsided from one moment to the next. She started to suck in air, noticing only now that her body hadn’t been breathing through the whole process.

Gasping for air, she looked into the sky and spoke to the invisible system again. "I just hate you."

She started stretching and wanted to roll on her back to rest a little. But then she felt a weird kind of resistance in her head. She instinctively touched her head and felt something hard stick to it. She sprang up and tried to pull off whatever was sticking to her head. But she only managed to hurt her neck pretty badly by pulling so hard.

"What the.." she murmured as she gingerly inspected her head with her hands. There were two curved things coming out on top of her forehead. They felt very hard, and it felt like they had some kind of wavy pattern in them. They felt like horns.

Sarah pressed her lips together and muffled a frustrated groan that wanted to escape her throat. The tail wasn’t enough. Now the system had given her horns. She already felt like an animal, acted like one, and finally looked like one. Great.

"Just please don’t give me fur." She begged the system, feeling too exhausted from what happened to her to get angry again.

"Well, at least it will help me." She encouraged herself and mentally opened the status screen to look at the updates.

She gawked at the updated status screen. Her basic and special stats had increased by so much. Some of the skill descriptions had also changed slightly, but it wasn't anything dramatic. What really interested her were her two new Nightmare mutations. A poisonous tail and invading minds without even the need to touch someone?

"Yeah, I kind of get why the class is named like this." She unwillingly told the system, while stretching her body. It felt like she had been born again.

The strength, magic power, and pure vitality she felt flowing through her body were intoxicating. She was relishing the feeling and didn’t really know what she should do with this overflowing energy.

She wanted to analyze her situation more. But she felt like she would burst at any moment if she didn’t start doing something. And so she started running through the swamp.

She was more than twice as fast as she was before her level up. With a joyful scream, she jumped high into the air, grasping a low hanging branch of a tree. After dangling there for a second, she started swinging herself along it.

Like this, she jumped from tree to tree, madly laughing all the while. After some time, she grabbed a branch that felt weirdly soft.

She confusedly looked at the branch, which looked back just as confused. The branch was a snake. A big and chunky snake.

Still processing what she was holding in her hand, she slammed directly into a thick tree trunk. The heavy impact squashed the unfortunate snake between her and the hard wood.

Sarah tumbled to the ground and landed hard. Her whole body hurt, and she felt like all the air was pressed out of her. But she still had to laugh. This was just too amazing.

After some time, her body hurt a little less, and she could breathe normally again. Then she happily took a bite from the snake as a new idea popped into her head.

She was much stronger now. So something like the mutated rat wouldn’t be able to hurt her anymore. It was more the opposite, actually. With her new powers, pretty much everything she encountered thus far was nothing more than prey.

That meant that she could now explore the danger zone, where the bigger animals lived. She hoped that the exit could be found in this direction. If not, she had to start looking deeper into the swamp. Which meant she had to wade through murky water with unknown creatures waiting inside it. Just thinking about this made her shudder.

Would she find other people outside of the spatial error? Would she not be alone anymore? With a sinking feeling, she looked down at herself. She was insanely dirty and still naked. Her whole body was smeared in dirt, blood, and unidentifiable goo. Not to mention her messy hair and her visible mutations.

"I guess it would be a good idea to dress myself somehow." She murmured, trying to think about how she could make clothes.

While munching on the snake, the realization came to her. She could just skin everything she found, somehow attach it together, and then she’d have wonderful clothing. Preferably something that could cover her tail. And her horns. And her whole body. She had a lot to do.

Now she could do two things at once. Find materials for her clothes and try out her new abilities. And of course, first came her horns. It was deforming, but at least it had a good effect.

Feeling pretty smart about her new idea, she stood up. She was still chewing on the snake and started testing the horns.

In the beginning, nothing really happened. After some time, though, she started to notice numerous beings around her. They were well hidden by their camouflage techniques.

"So uh." She mumbled a bit, unsure of what to do next. "Stop living. I guess?" As soon as she sent the signal out of her horns, all the beings around her fell to the ground, motionless.

But Sarah didn’t fare so well herself. An immense vertigo terrorized her head. She tried to sit on the ground but instead just fell down, directly on her face. Her consciousness left her before she could think of anything else.
