Chapter 6: A Tendency to Float

Chapter 6: A Tendency to Float

Her cheeks were burning again.

How do I keep embarrassing myself in front of her?

Sera stepped out of the water elevator, noticing the frozen turret hadn’t moved before one hand grabbed her pack as the other grabbed the pouch.

Throwing them both onto the ground she saw a familiar pool of blood nearby before feeling her head, it didn’t hurt but if she pressed too hard her sight went blurry.

Not a good sign if she gets hit again.

Pulling her hands to her pack, opening the top knot was more difficult because of the skin between her fingers, but she was able to open it after a small delay.

Inside she found.

Bag:

* Two weeks of rations.

* Flimsy knife.

* Rope.

The food was taking up the most space but even with it the pack was barely a quarter full, promising for carrying materials.

Talking about materials.

Sera found her self pushing the pack to the side and the red gem had just been ripped out of the beautiful pouch the princess had given her.

Recipe repair module (½)

[Assimilate]

Clicking the button before she could stop herself, the PID which had been thrown onto the ground in the hurry had opened and the screen morphed into a small box.

The red gem began pulsing as her hand got closer to the small open cube.

Dropping it inside the PID flashed and began shaking violently, Sera quickly picked it up and as she did another screen opened.

Old Recipes:

* Scanner.

* The scanner can be used to synthesise blueprints from salvaged technology, and to record flora and fauna data.

* Knife.

* The knife can be used as defence, gathering materials and is a versatile tool required for self-defence.

* Fins.

* Accelerate movement speed by 10%.

New Recipes:

[Assimilating. Estimated time 4-6 hours.]

It only showed the old recipes but considering she hadn’t seen them before.

Holy. Crap.

“How do I build these?” Sera covered her mouth and looked back to the elevator, she had gone down two floors, but she didn’t want to disrupt the princess.

Bringing her hand to the PID she clicked on the scanner first and saw the PID screen transform again.

Scanner Materials Required:

* Sand

* Gold

* Lead/Iron/Black Iron

For a scanner it was three materials, would a knife be better? No, I have one already and fins would be helpful since it would save time, but I need to know more about this world first and foremost.

Setting a goal for herself Sera began packing her gear away but stopped at the PID, was it the smartest idea to have the device away from her immediate reach.

Patting down her pants, she sullenly found no pockets, remembering a conversation between two nurses that the lack of pockets was a pain in the ass.

About to put the PID away Sera saw her belt and remembered the pouch she was given.

Eager to check the outside world she quickly got to work, dumping the coins in her bag she tied the pouch to her waist and tucked the PID away she began walking towards the exit.

Passing by the turret and the bloodstain one last time Sera met the doors before realising she had another problem, how was she going to get outs-

[Open Gate?]

The blue screen appeared over the entrance, much like the water elevator, clicking the button the entire room began trembling.

A rocky noise mixed with gears turning came every time the gate rose a meter, until finally she was face to face with the outside world, which was…

Blue.

A dark blue that she couldn’t help walking towards, almost entranced.

Before she knew what happened her body was in the water.

The surroundings whirred as suddenly an array of noises came to her, a deep horn that sounded organic, water bubbles mixed with electrical zaps and finally all the sounds were muted and unique.

“Whoa,” A blue and white scaled fish swam right by the entrance, it didn’t seem to pay Sera any attention as it continued by.

In the distance surrounding what now looked like a lead up to a massive ruin, was covered in barnacles between flashing green lights and long hunks of metal scattered across the landscape.

Swimming away from the entrance, Sera first used her feet like she was kicking the water but started using breast stroke when it felt unnatural.

One of the first things her mother had taugh-

* Materials for constructing basic survival tools likely to be found.

(Map update in progress… survival guidelines being retrieved from database.)

“Shipwreck, everything looks so alive though? And materials as well, I can’t wait to scan and try making some of the new tools… and weapons.” The surrounding landscape was almost atop of a hill, with everything leading away from the temple descending deeper into the sea floor.

* Find a vantage point for an in-depth map.

“A vantage point as well,” Sera looked back to the temple she had just left.

It reached near the top of the waves but… there was something off about the surface of the water.

Sera followed the waves to see if it was the movements, it looked crystal clear but there was something else.

“Oh, of course.” She realised looking at a wandering fish nibbling at some of the green seagrass.

There were no fish anywhere near the top of the water, in fact it seemed like all the fish were avoiding sunlight altogether.

Strange.

Looking around her again Sera found herself further and further away from the seafloor.

She couldn’t help but have a tendency to float, what if there were islands or land nearby?

People would be helpful if she wanted to help the princess, and the PID did recommend a vantage point…

Taking large sweeps of the water her speed finally caught up as she was halfway to the top of the temple there was a deep growl in the water, similar to the horn like sound she had heard earlier.

Her sweeps slowed as Sera frantically looked around her but found nothing nearby except for the building.

It was an unnatural feeling being this high up, it made her stomach turn for some reason, despite it being the surface, something she had lived in a lifetime ago.

As Sera got closer to the surface the growls began to sound more like drawn out high pitched screams in the distance.

Then she saw a shape.

A slither which made her freeze, her body frozen and her head staring at the black shape in the distance, despite the water being clear near the temple it seemed the further out the water was darker, murkier.

Hearing another scream, this time further out as the shape in the water disappeared, Sera could see the highlight of a large tale before her body remembered how to move.

That’s right I’m in another world, even on Earth there were sharks but nothing that big or that… scary.

Finally swimming past the temple Sera sped up as she realised how visible she was in the middle of the clear waters, as she reached the peak her head popped out, and she instinctively took a big breath of air.

Only to push it back out and do a few 360’s in the water, scanning the surroundings.

But all she found was water, above her the sun glistened over the surface creating a dreamlike atmosphere.

Water for miles… if not forever.

What if the world was all water? I guess it wouldn’t be bad since I can only breathe in the water but not having grass or tree’s feels like I’m missing something.

Hearing the waves crash against each other lightly Sera looked back down before remembering how exposed she was.

Dunking herself back under she desperately began to swim down again, her head turning left and right judging every shadow to be coming towards her, she couldn’t help her body go into overdrive.

Cleaving through the water with broad strokes Sera pushed away the menu that came up.

Area Scanned.

Hearing the large scream much closer Sera stuck close to the top of the Temple as she swam down by it, taking peaks every few strokes but otherwise focusing fully on swimming.

There's a reason why no other fish swim near the surface.

There's a very good reason why no other fish swim near the surface.

Seeing nothing but shadows Sera didn’t trust her eyes and kept going until she met the ocean floor and nearly swam to the entrance until she noticed the sounds of the screeching were long gone.

In their place was the sounds she had first heard, water bubbling and wisping away along with zapping coming from the numerous platforms and pieces of the temple that were scattered around.

Floating over to what looked like a rock Sera let her body fall to the sea floor as she began huffing and puffing, her neck sucking in and pushing water out at an alarming rate.

Well.

That’s the last time I go anywhere near the surface. Sera decided, brining her hand over to her PID until the loudest noise she had ever heard hounded her ears.

A loud horn echoed through the ocean, Sera leapt off the rock, looking for the noise only to find it was coming from the temple itself.

What happening? Less than a moment Sera questioned the noise that had scared her gills to a squelch, she got her reply.

Alert:

Prison protocol engaged.

All living organisms within the temple are contained within the prisoner level, lockdown will be engaged until dismissed by a commander tier PID.

“What… Wait, the princess!”

Sera hurried to the entrance, speaking aloud and forgetting about the threat of predators.

Swimming to the entrance to the gate which stopped all water from entering was closed with a prompt showing every time Sera tried to push or pull it up.

Area Locked

“She’s stuck, and I can’t go back in, if no one but me knows that she’s here...”

Her hands were gripped as they pulled back from the unmoving gate.

But not before seeing one last prompt before Sera realised she had more to worry about that just the princess.
