Chapter 20

The two men were eager to speak after just a few minutes of simple interrogation. Taking advantage of the layout of this building Eigil had placed each one of the men in different rooms and interrogated them separately. Their screams helped intimidate each other and making them answer his questions quietly guaranteed they could not arrange to give him false information. It took him half an hour since he entered the building to gain all the information he could.

This was not as effective as he had anticipated, they were nothing but goons, both mercenaries were hired as patrol men and guards.

The information he got was mostly names and locations of their higher-ups, nothing on motives or their plan. Before he ended things here Eigil confirmed what he could using the papers on the bunker.

When he got everything, he could from this location, Eigil placed the bodies of the men in different positions and took down the roof on them; just a faulty building tragically falling apart.

His mind racing, trying to understand this group, Eigil made his way towards the palace. The patrols at night along with the curfew the royal family had placed to guaranteed a peaceful religious transition made it difficult to cross the city for any normal citizen.

It is not to say that the streets became dark and silent, they did not. People stayed in their houses after twilight but a peaceful and wholesome energy covered the city. This gave him the time to retreat into his thoughts.

These men had not been believers of the religion but their leader was, he accepted the contract and brought them here. Most in the mercenary group had their doubts at first, however, they were greeted by great benefits in the form of good food, nice locations like the building he had find them in and higher pay than they had ever had.

This meant this church had access to a large number of resources and some very capable men. At least they should be. Most of the lower ranks were normal soldiers and mercenaries, no one or renown or known talent among them. The issue came when you saw the leaders of this ‘holy’ army.

As Eigil walked silently avoiding the patrols, he heard the sounds of happy family diners along with music and dancing from various houses. These changes had not affected the civilians much; it actually had been positive for them from what he could gather.

Even with the tight leash the organization maintained on their allies, crime was a volatile thing. They could not control every section or branch of crime and Atrix had some rough years.

With crime in the rise, it was clear that the religion was accepted faster and wider than normal thanks to the protection and help provided by this church towards the law-abiding citizens.

Eigil knew the upper echelon of the children had done something remarkable but the wellbeing of the populous was not his priority.

The now bishop and priests did not represent any threat towards him, however, among the higher ups Rowan Charlton and Manuel Rylan were his greatest concerns.

Rowan was known as the bull slasher, a monarch level Dragon style warrior famous for his insane strength. Being one of the twenty-two was in itself a problem, his resistance was close to legendary and his weapon was strong enough to slice steel. Eigil would need a clean assassination or the best preparation he could to face this enemy.

Manuel contrary to his partner was no warrior; considered one of the smartest men alive, he had been expelled from the university at a younger age than most people are able to enter. His name rose to prominence as a man who could change the balance of any war by his bold and effective strategies. He had managed to lead an army from Kotop to take territory from both the empire and Bamir in one swift strike.

If he wanted to eliminate the influence of the children in the city, or at least make their hold waiver enough to re-establish the guild and caravans, he would need to eliminate both men.

The maps Eigil took described most of the city, they highlighted the different structures the children of the garden used divided into five colours for reference. Red and green marked the mercenary outposts, in construction and operating respectively. The buildings were gathered from the exiles all over the city and remodelled to house the guards and their equipment. ten to fifteen guards live in each building. The one he destroyed was in the process of adequation with only two members to ensure everything went smoothly.

blue and white were used to show the main locations for captains and priests with the royal palace marked in white with a golden symbol for the bishop. These locations were always heavily guarded with armed members of the inquisition. This was highly important as the local law stated no one aside from the city guards could be openly armed. The power of this church was beyond what he had expected when he spoke with Garlin.

The final colour in the maps was a black outline that covered areas that seemed to be related with the cemeteries around town. This may be enemies of the church as it opposed the white shown for the higher ups but there was no reference for the colour written anywhere. He had managed to gather the rest of the information from the two men and the scattered orders and memos left in the building.

He needed more information and fast.
