Now we’re back to today, where I’m stuck with an annoying person who won’t leave me alone.
“Hey Sol!” I heard San (Sanguis) yell from across the hall.
“Hey San!” Well, the school wasn’t all bad. I met San last week when he introduced himself, and I thought he was a bit creepy at first. However, after getting to know him, he was a really chill guy.
“San, what class do you have first period, lemme see your schedule.” After San handed me his schedule, I noticed he had swim first period, same as me.
“Hell yeah! Well Sol, see you there!” I waved as I watched San runoff.
Swim was a normal swim class, all things considered, other than the fact that Cel ended up swimming so fast he propelled all the water out the pool. If our swim teacher, Ms.Aqua (Yes that’s her real name) didn’t have water magic, we would’ve waited a few days for that swim pool to be filled back up.
During lunch, I was sitting down eating with San. Today I ate some simple rice and chicken, (Thank god Inter didn’t ask for Papa John’s again). While I was eating, Cel popped up next to me.
“Hey Sol, have you ever heard about the fortune telling magic in this school?” When Cel asked me that, I was confused, but interested.
“No, not really, what’s that?” I fidgeted with my fork against my now empty lunch plate.
Cel looked really excited, which was never a good sign. “Well, this fortune teller does friend readings, where he could read 2 possible outcomes of your friendship, the success rate from last year was apparently 100%!”
I was suddenly extremely interested. Not that I wanted to know if me and Cel were compatible friends (We were not), but maybe this could help me understand the connection between me and him.
“Alright then Cel, me and you can go together after school.” After I said that, Cel beamed with happiness.
“Alright, see you thereeeeee!” Cel ran off yet again, which I’m beginning to notice is a tendency for him.
After Cel left I had a very tough conversation with San about our backstory (had to make the whole thing up).
“So yeah my mom is a doctor that specializes in blood donation, she even gives me some blood so I can work with my magic.” I forgot to mention, San has an interesting type of magic where if he drinks the blood of someone, he can gain their magic powers for a short period of time. “Well Sol, what do your parents do?”
I wrinkled my nose at the word parents. I never grew up with them, because Inter made me kill them when I was 3 years old.
“Ah yeah, my mom and dad work uh- overseas, on aaaaaaa architecture project!” I hoped San couldn't see how nervous I was.
Before San could respond to me, the bell rang. I quickly got out of my seat.
“Well, then.” I said nervously. “I’ll get going now.”
The rest of the day was as normal as a magic school could be.
I was getting mentally prepared to be hauled at Mach 20 to the fortune telling area when I heard Ms.Green’s voice.
“Sol, I would like you in my office please.” She looked at me like daggers were stabbing into my body (every time I see Ms.Green It's just another simile to describe her).
“Cel, I’ll meet you at the fortune telling area ok!”
“Okay Sol!” With that Cel ran off, yet again.
When I walked into Ms.Green’s office, the first thing I thought was bland. She had a simple desk that had a laptop, a cup with pencils and other utensils, and a notepad. She had 1 poster of the world map, and she had one of those old clocks, the one’s that your grandfather would give you as a “Family Heirloom”.
“Please take a seat.” I flinched. I didn’t even notice Ms.Green standing behind me until she said those words.
“Oh o-okay.” In all reality, I was pretty nervous. Had I done something wrong that would get me sent to the teacher’s office on the second day? Oh it was so much worse.
“There’s no need to worry, this is just a background check.” Ms.Green sat down at her desk.
I let out a relieved sigh. I didn’t do anything wrong, but why do a background check on me specifically? Could it be that…
“You have quite an interesting history Sol, or should I say Victor.
If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
I scowled when she said the name I was trying to keep hidden.
“How do you know that name?” I growled.
Ms.Green smiled, “I’ve been keeping an eye on you Victor-”
“Sol” I didn’t want anyone saying that name again.
Ms.Green stacked her papers neatly “Yes, my bad Sol. Anyway, being a teacher, I am also a scout for potential students to join the school, and I have seen your prowess in magical ability. However, I do have to say, your criminal record is nothing to sneeze at. Killed your parents when you were 3. In and out of six orphanages, all crumbled to the ground.”
My anger fizzled out and my nervousness returned, “What are you going to do, report me to the police?”
Ms.Green laughed, which I hadn’t seen in the week I've interacted with her. “No no, I wouldn’t have gotten you in this school if I wanted to send you to prison. I’m sure, whatever happened in that time, you had a reason for it. However there is something I need you for. I want to assign you and Cel to an A class mission. I’m sure you know what missions are for, right?”
I nodded. Who in this school didn’t? Missions were assignments sent to us students that would assess our abilities. They were ranked in difficulty for D to S, D being a small task, like a chore, and S being something akin to CIA level missions. However, even B class missions were rare for first years, but A class was insane.
“So you’re using my past as blackmail against me to do this mission.” I averted my eyes from her gaze, which had returned to its usual glare.
“It would work, right?” Ms.Green smiled again knowing the complete victory she scored against me.
I hated to admit it though, but she was right. If all I needed for her to shut up about my past was to do a mission, no matter how tough it was, I would do it no issue.
“Well, I'm sure Cel could complete it on his own. However, Cel is a bit too stubborn and rash. All I really need is for you to look after him, make sure he doesn’t get off track”
“Ok, just one question. Cel is so fast he could run to and from the country in a minute, wouldn’t I just slow him down?”
Ms.Green sighed “Unfortunately, I wish it were that easy, Cel could only really run freely on the school campus, imagine if you were a regular civilian and you saw someone running past you at Mach 20.”
“Fair point.”
Ms.Green ripped a paper out of her notepad and handed it to me, “You won’t be able to read this until you get back to your dorm. Also, the quest will be assigned for you in 3 days. Spend those days building up a strong relationship with Cel.”
With that, I was ushered out of Ms.Green’s room. I stood there for a few seconds, bewildered about what just happened. I had many questions I wanted to ask Ms.Green. Who did she get my backstory from, and why did she choose me to look after Cel?
What was I planning to do after school again? Right. Me. Cel. Fortune Telling.
I walked out of the school.
While the school looked great, the campus also did not disappoint. The main paths that interconnected throughout the campus formed one big web. In between those paths were either paved blades of grass, or buildings. This campus was supposed to emulate the life of a city, and it was showing. In fact, the Papa Johns I ordered from was on campus.
I noticed Imo while I was walking. I never could really get a good read on him. Throughout this week, I constantly tried to engage in conversation with him, however he was either ignoring me or just didn’t notice me.
“Can’t get a read on him huh.” When I heard that voice, I smiled. It was Clara. I didn’t like her or anything, her magic for some reason makes anyone who is around her smile artificially.
I turned my head “You're talking about Imo right, do you know him?”
Clara pursed her lips “No, but I’ve noticed, he’s the only one who doesn’t smile when I’m around him.” To my surprise, Clara didn’t really look mad or disappointed, she looked happy about that fact.
“I don’t know if I’m reading too much into it, but are you happy about that fact?” I winced, still with that artificial smile. I had a feeling Clara had the strong girl energy, like she could stomp me into the ground. I really didn’t want to get on her bad side.
Instead of looking angry, Clara beamed with happiness. “Of course! You don’t know how mad I am about the fact that everyone smiles when I’m around them. It makes me soooooo angry. I’m on a mission to get Imo to smile, a pure, genuine one.”
'Well that’s impossible, that man is pure darkness, he’s gonna go on his villain arc annnyyy day now, we should kill him'. Inter had also judged each classmate just as I did. His judgment on most of them, they should die.
“Good luck with that then, see ya!” I left Clara to her own devices. In a part of my heart I hoped that Clara’s mission to make Imo smile would work out.
Eventually, I made it to the fortune telling area where Cel had saved a spot for us.
“Hey Sol, get in here!”
When we entered the tent it was very ominous. It looked like a psychic lair.
The man, I was assuming the fortune teller, looked at us with a stern stare.
“Come, take your seats,” the fortune teller gestured to the seats. Me and Cel took a seat.
I would sum up everything neatly, but almost nothing he said about us was normal.
He started with the friend reading where he already looked surprised. “You will either be the best of friends or worst of enemies.”
That’s great. I knew I would never be good friends with Cel, but making enemies with a man who could go Mach 20 was not high on my to do list.
He then started the individual readings. He first turned to Cel. “You shall either luckily succeed and stay blissfully ignorant, or you will learn a valuable lesson that will stay for life.”
Cel’s eyes widened. This is the first time I saw him as something other than happy, I didn’t have time to think about him as the fortune teller turned to me. He looked at me for a few seconds, then his eyes widened. “You will either save your friend from the pits of darkness, or die attempting to do what the greatest have never done.”
