Chapter 5: Hungry

Emma followed the screaming. Words like ‘help!’ and ‘please!’ wrote in her mind’s ledger the desperation of a man. But where was the man?

“Hello?! Where are you?!” Emma shouted.

There was a faint reply, but she could not make it out.

Continuing to call out for the man, Emma suddenly realized she was passing by trees and roots and rocks on her way to find this distressed man. At what point did vegetation begin to grow? Had it always grown?

Looking back, Emma now saw a whole grove of trees and earthly delights. How had she not seen them, she wondered. Was it possible she was so focused on survival she did not comprehend the basics of the world around her? If so, such was a distressing revelation.

Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

On the bright side, Emma mused as she inched herself closer and closer to the source of the noise, I can easily get across this funk.

With navigational landmarks to ease her travel across the solid water, Emma made short work of the gap between her and the other. Running past trees, boulders, and a number of strange horse statues, Emma saw the man she had been seeking after turning a corner on main… or the horse statue, rather.

And the man? Well, the man was normal, but nothing could have prepared Emma for what she saw attacking the man. Birds? No! griffins! And judging by the way the griffins were pecking and screeching — circling the man who was desperately trying to fend off the monsters — they were hungry for a meal.
