Chapter 4: Walking on Water

Yes, ‘solid water.’ That was the ground… or feet? Emma didn’t have time to pontificate on what to call the solid matter beneath her shoes. It was water. It was frozen, but it was not cold. Emma decided to move on with her life.

Taking a number of tentative steps on this surface, a part of Emma was surprised when the water did not break. Or even crack. Soon, Emma’s stress test steps turned to confident fast steps as she continued to push forward.

But as she pushed forward, Emma had no idea where she was going. She knew she had to make it back to Boston, she knew she was in a shipwreck, and she knew that the wrath of a god was to blame. But other than that, there was little Emma knew about how to get herself out of this situation.

Walking on the solid water was a trip. Other than the occasional glint of sunlight reflected in the crystalline hues of the static aquatic, there was little to differentiate the solid water from the moving water, and Emma nearly fell back into the normal water a handful of times.

However little Emma knew, though, she knew she had to press forward. She had to do something to survive this and standing around in one place was not it. Not in the ocean, anyway.

Then again, Emma thought to herself, this is not exactly the typical ocean. Where am I?

Looking to the sky, the dim blue of the post-storm had turned to a shade of white. With the waters a deep blue, and the horizon stretching off forever until the ocean and sky met in the distance, the sight of two strong colors dominating everything, took Emma out of it for a while if she stared too long. What is this place? This is not normal…

A noise caught hold of Emma’s ears. It sounded like someone was in trouble. Screams?

Emma began to run. Somewhere just up ahead was another living person, and she would not miss a chance to gain an ally. That, or die with dignity with another mortal.
