Chapter 1: Awakening

Authors Note:

So just want to warn the readers at this point, don’t get too attached to any of my characters. I’m trying to keep the general theme of the story as realistic as I can in spite of the fantasy theme and unfortunately that may mean he isn’t always going to be able to be the hero you may want him to be. I also plan to switch between third and first person perspectives but say if you find it too confusing.

Ajax’s POV:

I woke up, groggy and looked around, confused at where I was. Normally, when you died in game, all that happened was that you were ejected from the virtual world for a two real life days’ period.

So why was I in a forest?

Getting up, I noticed that I still had my weapons and equipment, my Nanofiber sword clutched by my stiff fingers. “Jared, where am I?”, I thought, wondering idly if my AI would have any better of an idea of just where the hell we had ended up. This didn’t look like any planet I had ever found on The New Frontier; the colours were too bright, with the graphics just a little too vivid.

I wonder if there was an update, it wouldn’t be the first time that the developers had sprung an update without telling anyone, but he would be surprised if they had done it again, the last time it had been done a large group of affected players had started a class action lawsuit against the company and had almost won.

“Well, Sir I do believe that we are no longer on the enemy commander’s ship”, I sigh, this is what I get for making the AI sarcastic. Well thank you for that extremely helpful input Jared and make sure to continue to impart your incredibly helpful word of wisdom when you can.

“Thank you Sir, I plan to”, shaking my head I decide to start walking towards the rive I can see lazily flowing at the edge of the clearing that I’m in. I can figure out what’s happened with the battle later, with the way the battle was going Hee definitely would have won it. For now, there was a whole world to explore.

Walking through the dense forest I noticed how quiet the forest had become, the birds had stopped singing and the rustling I had been hearing from the small animals in the brush had stopped.

Suddenly a blur of fur and claws jumped out from above me, aiming to rip out my throat with its oversized fangs. Fuck! Jumping back, the cat only grazed my chest piece, barely scratching it, but unfortunately I hadn’t thought to put my helmet back on, what with dying and all. Frantically trying to keep its grasping claws away from my squishy parts with one hand, I fumbled for my sword with the other, desperately feeling for my scabbard. There! Got it, I drew the sword and straightened, holding it like an expert, right until the cat knocked it right out of my hands, well, maybe not.

Grappling with the beast we tumbled onto the ground, locked in a wrestling match, me trying desperately to find a stone large enough to cave in its skull. Found it, smashing its head with the stone again and again until it finally stopped moving.

I slowly got up and wandered to a nearby tree where I promptly threw up, I had hunted before, but that… that had been just too real. I checked for the logout button, my wife would be able to calm me down, she always had. It wasn’t there. Why isn’t it there? All right, calm down Alex, just call a GM and they’ll sort out the problem. “Call GM, GM, help”, starting to really get worried now when none of the usual commands were working, I shuffled over to a nearby rock to wait and see if a GM would appear.

Hours later, no one had come for me and it was starting to get dark, I heard a growling coming from a nearby bush and a... monstrosity of a dog appeared. Massive and dark, covered with rippling muscle, its eyes were fixed on the cat I had killed earlier it the day.

“Here boy, don’t hurt me, you can have the cat, I didn’t want it anyway”, I said, nervously backing away. It growled at me and I took it as a sign to run. Crashing through the bushes in the direction I had seen the river go earlier, praying that the monster wasn’t following. It wasn’t, must’ve been happy with what it had without a scrawny Fey, no meat on me anyway.

Sorry about the shorter chapter today, keyboard decided to stop working, so had to cut to a halfway decent end point.
