I haven’t eaten in several days. I check my pockets to see if I have any spare coins. Of course they’re empty though. I slowly walk along the town streets, hopeful that food would just magically appear in front of me. It’s probably better than sitting still waiting to starve.
The time is around midday, so the streets are quite busy. Down the street I spot a few horse drawn carriages with fancy decorations plastered over them, only the people who are lucky enough to be born rich are able to afford to be dragged around by horses instead of using their own two feet like the peasants. While commoners like me are starving to death, the rich are buying their luxurious gold encrusted carriages and keeping horses as pets. The money that they have is taken straight from the hands of lower class people who work underneath them, the commoners work hard and then the rich people reap all the rewards. They spend frivolously and pay no heed to the fact that people like me could survive a year on the money that they throw away in a day. The only reason they’re rich and I’m poor is that they got lucky enough to be born into the money, they aren’t more qualified than me in any way.
I stopped walking so that I could focus on thinking about how undeserving these people are of their wealth. Why do they think that they are so important that they can’t even walk to their destinations? The horses that drag these lazy people around must eat better than I do, which admittedly isn’t much of a competition. The carriages are slowly passing me by while I stare at every single one of them. Fancy and luxurious, they all look the same to me, just flashy and tacky. The horses must be quite strong to be able to pull around all of the weight of those fat nobles.
One of the horses is acting a little strange… shaking around and making weird noises. Maybe the horse isn’t being treated as well as I thought by it’s rich owners. As soon as it was about to pass by me, it decided it would attempt it’s brave escape. Good for you horsey, I guess no one could like those guys, not even animals.
Wait a second… The escaping horse is heading straight in my direction!? I’ve got no calories to even attempt to run. I can’t believe this is the pathetic way that I go out. I wish I could have overcome my struggles in this life and become someone great like I always wanted to be. I could have maybe become a war hero or maybe even a lord of a land. I’m scared to die, there are so many things I could have achieved. My mind is going white, is this what it means for your life to flash before your eyes? It’s so bright that I can’t see anything, as if I’m staring into the sun. I blink repeatedly to hopefully get my eyes readjusted.

…I’m still alive? I look around to see what looks like hundreds of dazed people standing around beside me in a large arena. They must’ve seen that white light too, because most of them look incredibly confused. In the center of the arena is a large floating human shaped creature, but there’s no way a human could be so big, much less float in the air. It seems to be the one that summoned all of us to this place.
“Welcome to the tower chosen ones. You were summoned here because you are special. The tower has decided that you are qualified to attempt its trials. Should you manage to climb to the top of the tower, you will be granted anything you could possibly desire.
There are multiple floors that you must overcome to reach the top. In order to reach the next floor, you must find the boss room and defeat the boss in battle. The boss will respawn after killing it, so that the next chosen ones can take on the challenge.
Lastly, all chosen ones are able to grow and evolve using the [Status] system. When you slay enemies, you will be given experience points and become stronger. The [Status] command should show you where your current strength lies. And remember that strength is everything in the tower.”
The huge creature slowly fades away and disappears.
What the fuck? That sounds amazing! A world where I can live by only my own strength, social standing doesn’t matter so I can finally prove my worth on an even playing field. I quickly yell out [Status]!
[Name] Eden
[Level] 1
[Strength] 5
[Mana] 5
[Dexterity] 5
[Health] 5
[Experience Points] 0
[Equipment] Sword
Wow the system is really showing up in front of my eyes. I press on the sword button and a sword materializes in my hands from thin air. Holy crap, the system is actually real! I can actually level up and who knows, maybe I can become the strongest and be renowned as a hero. I turn to look at the other chosen ones, they all still look confused like they have no idea what’s going on. If these guys are my competition, then climbing the tower might be easier than I expected haha!
