Chapter 12 - A moment of joy

My brother, realizing the situation, began to be intrigued by this revelation.

"Singing?"

My brother asked, a little confused, but already beginning to suspect who this 'mysterious person' might be, but he wanted to be sure before making any judgment.

"Yes, that's right."

Levy and Mrs. Ur confirmed in unison, almost forming a chorus. This further aroused the curiosity of the people present.

"So, he really must be with someone. But who must that person be? Is it someone you know?"

My mother asked with that eagerness to know everything about other people's gossip.

"I don't know if it's an acquaintance or not. But from the looks of it, she must be someone very special to him. After all, he's working hard; he's even working with his father to raise money, probably for the wedding, I think."

Ur replied, showing that she was not only very proud of her son, but also wanted to know as soon as possible who this mysterious girl was who was radically changing her son's behavior.

While Mrs. Ur was telling us this information, my heart and I couldn't take it anymore, and I accidentally let out a little cry of happiness. But luckily for me, everyone thought I was just happy for the good news.

Unfortunately, one person in particular didn't fall for it and secretly stared at me suspiciously. My brother, who was already suspicious of me when Levy and Ur revealed that this mystery person was good at singing, but now after this scream, he's sure to be all over me.

My brother's attentive gaze didn't go unnoticed, and I felt his suspicion growing by the second. He would soon confront me about the real reason behind my apparent enthusiasm.

But our attention ended up being directed entirely to Mrs. Ur, who began to talk again about this person her son was taking such a liking to. That, for me, was good at the same time, since I could find out if Gray' family really liked me. At the same time, it was also quite dangerous, because she could end up revealing something that only my family could know about me. Like, some secret that Gray might have told them. It wouldn't lead directly to me, but those who know me would know, i.e. my family, thus creating a mess like that.

"I still don't know who this girl is, but thanks to her my son has become more responsible, he's even started working at the town's police station to earn his own money, and that in itself makes me very proud of him. I may not even know who this angel is, but because she's managing to make my son happy, she's like a daughter to me."

"This girl must certainly be a lucky girl, after all, Gray is not only a wonderful, polite boy, he's also responsible."

My mother said, in a cheerful tone, when she found out that her best friend's son was not only doing so well in life but was about to marry someone, even if she didn't know who it was, but she was happy all the same.

(And Mom, I know you're happy about all this... but the only problem is that the girl who's making you so happy is your daughter and I doubt very much that you'll be that happy when I don't pass the selection and you find out that, as well as marrying Gray, I've done everything I can not to pass this fucking selection).

Lucy thought, trying to disguise a small smile on her face.

As they continued their conversation, I began to blush more and more as I thought about what my life would be like after marrying the person I love so much. I didn't even have the words to describe what I was feeling at that moment. It was something magical for me, a dream come true, and the only obstacle in my way was that fucking selection on the way, which was like a stone in my shoe that wouldn't come loose.

(So, at that moment when he wanted to say something to me, but couldn't because of the patrol, was he really going to ask me to marry him?)

Lucy thought, becoming even more apprehensive again, unable to believe that, if it hadn't been for the meddling of the patrol guards, she could now consider herself married.

After those revelations, it was almost impossible for me to remain normal, even if to everyone who saw me on the outside, it looked like I was normal, but unfortunately, I wasn't normal at all, I was pretending to be normal, but I wasn't. I was not normal. However, on the inside, as well as not being normal at all, I was still crazy. The only thing going through my head was: Gray, Gray, Gray and nothing else.

As the conversation went on, I became more and more immersed in thoughts about what my life would be like after marrying Gray. Anxiety and happiness mixed together, creating a whirlwind of emotions inside me. I couldn't contain my excitement, but the imminent presence of the selection hung like a dark cloud over my contentment.

(My God, if only this selection didn't exist, I could fully enjoy this moment and live this love story unhindered).

Lucy thought to herself as she let out a long, painful, silent sigh, without anyone realizing that she was the one who was suffering the most from everything that was happening.

After almost two hours of waiting in that infernal queue, which seemed like an eternity to me, our turn had finally come.

I began to approach the counter cheerfully. Inside, a little middle-aged man with an unfriendly expression on his face, who probably didn't even like his own job, stared at me and handed me some papers to sign so that I could take part in that blessed selection.

After picking up the papers, I signed them according to what I was reading on the paper. After I'd finished filling everything out and checking that I'd signed everything correctly (but I hadn't), the unfriendly little man took the paper from my hand and told me to go into the next room.

When I got to the next room, a photographer was waiting for me and asked me to sit down. After I sat down, he asked me to smile for the photo. As I was already quite excited about the news about Gray, I shook my hair a few times to make it look more alive in the photo.
