Vol Two: In The Heavens, Part One

“Now, now, my dear little sister. What trouble have you been causing?”

The young girl sat behind an art easel painting a beautiful picture of a purple dragon. The voice caused her to drop her brush and not only ruin the painting but also the fine silk robes she was wearing. It was a deeper purple than she was currently painting in and embroidered with gold patterns. Her form stiffened, and she looked around the library she currently sat in. She looked for her older sister, whose voice the accusation came from. The oldest sister. She could never remember who was older than her or Daichi. Some small part of her thought that this sister may even be older than the Father, but that made little sense. Genki shook her head.

Finally, the elder sister arrived. She strolled from the corner of the room as if the room was her own. This made Genki frown, and she wished she could figure out how she could go wherever she wanted, even in Genki’s own realm. Normally the Kami had to enter the realms of the others in special areas. The woman wore large robes that were as black as the night sky, with soft twinkles of the stars glowing here and there. Her face was painted white with just a thin strip of red in the middle of her lips. Eyes had a mixture of deep orange and reds and the black hair was done up with golden intricate jewelries

Genki stared at Teru and gaped. She always thought her older sister was so beautiful. Something about her just, ugh. Genki could never live up to her beauty or her power. She stared for long moments as her sister’s lithe figure moved over to her and stood over her. Genki stared up at Teru and blinked as the woman’s form seemed to grow taller. Her face, though, never faltered. It was always smiling, and Genki couldn’t see a hint of malice in her sister’s face.

Finally, Teru cleared her throat. “Well?” She asked.

Genki’s eyes went wide, and she looked at Teru after she gave a shake of her head. She snapped herself out of whatever trance she was in. “What do you mean? I haven’t done anything I’m simply painting my dear sister,” she finally answered innocently.

Teru slowly went back to her short, petite form and crossed her arms over her chest. One narrowed, perfectly shaped eyebrow raised as she watched Genki. “Is that so?”

Genki nodded dumbly.

“Kenji told me about how our dear brother Kentaro went rampaging through his lands,” Teru told Genki before the older sister went and sat on a large, oddly shaped couch. Once Teru could figure out how to sit in it she found it quite comfortable, but that took several moments.

Genki turned on her stool to watch Teru and gave a soft shrug. “What does that have to do with me?”

Teru looked over at the youngest sister of the family. She appeared maybe sixteen or so, though even as the youngest of the Kami she was centuries old. At least she had stopped trying to paint her face white like Teru did. Although, Teru supposed, maybe the look would suit the Kami of illusions better. The geisha back on the mortal plane took their looks from Teru, but weren’t they selling illusions after a fashion? Teru shook the thought away and looked over at Genki.

“I don’t know, dear sister, I was just checking. I know how you like to cause such mischief,” Teru said as she climbed off the couch and approached her sister.

Genki stiffened and her back went straight when she watched Teru approach her. She wasn’t sure about the depths of Teru’s powers, and she decided she didn’t want to find out today. She held the sigh of relief when Teru played with her own hair. She was fiddling and putting up a strand of her own black hair that fell loose from its own golden clasp.

“I’ve been here painting,” Genki said innocently and gave a nod.

Teru nodded her head and grinned before she leaned in and kissed Genki’s forehead and set her hands on the girl’s shoulders. “Of course you have, sweetheart. I’m sorry your painting has been ruined. I didn’t mean to surprise you,” she said as she walked away.

“No problem. Always happy to see you sister,” Genki said and watched the woman drift off and disappear just as quickly and quietly as she ever had.

Once Genki was sure she was gone, she picked the brush up and threw it across the room with a scream that rattled the very castle she lived in. Far off in the plane of mortals, even dragons rose their heads when they heard the shout and exhaled loudly. They blinked their tired eyes, and an elder looked at the younglings sleeping next to him and frowned.

“The Heavens are distraught.” he shook his head and then laid his head back down fell back asleep as dragons did. He cared little for the troubles of the Heavens or the Mortals.
