The soft glimmer of dawn peeked through the fabric of Jun's tent, casting a golden hue across the tranquil lakeside just outside the Pokémon Research Lab. He slowly unzipped the tent, the familiar rustle of fabric waking the morning. The world outside was alive with sounds – the familiar gentle lapping of water against the shore, the rustling of leaves in the cool breeze, and the sweet chirps of Pokémon greeting the new day.
Jun rubbed the sleep from his eyes, glancing back at Echo, his one-week-old Blipbug, rolling and bumping around the tent with a fervor that belied his age. The little bug Pokémon rolled to a stop next to Jun , repeating phrases he had learnt the day before.
'Battle, Jun! Battle!' Echo squeaked in a high-pitched voice, each word resonating with excitement.
“Not just yet, Echo,” Jun replied with a gentle smile, brushing a hand through his disheveled hair. “First, we need to have a talk with Toxel.”
Jun's other Pokémon, Toxel, lay curled on the bed, a little bundle of purple with white accents. She looked quite put out by all the noise this early in the morning. She was the most recent addition, but she had more of a penchant for cuddling than for battling or training. The moment she saw Jun approach, her eyes widened slightly, and she raised her stubby arms, requesting to be held.
“Good morning, Toxel,” Jun said softly as he picked her up and sat her on his hip. Toxel looked up with sleepy eyes, her tiny form twitching slightly as she let out a soft, drowsy squeak.
“Not in the mood to battle today?” Jun asked, running a hand through her short dense fur. Toxel shivered as she enjoyed his ministrations and responded with a slow shake of her head, preferring the warmth and comfort of lazing about to the idea of training.
“I figured as much.” Jun chuckled, glancing at the shimmering waters of the lake, then back at Toxel, who was nuzzling closer. “You’ve never been one for battles. Maybe it’s time to accept that about you.”
Gardevoir drifted beside Jun and gave a soft hum, she reached over and gave the baby a soft pinch on the nose. She had been his guardian for over 2 weeks now, since he had arrived in Galar, her psychic powers always at the ready, either to defend or deter oncoming threats, her presence also staved away much of the homesickness Jun would surely have felt if she had not been by his side. Jun felt a swell of gratitude for both Gardevoir and his mentor, Professor Aria, who had sent them together to Galar for this adventure, hoping to broaden his experiences and knowledge.
‘Maybe once Echo is leveled up a bit more and is capable of protecting my safety, I can send Gardevoir back to Professor Aria, along with Toxel.’ Jun mused to himself, he could tell that Toxel had latched onto Gardevoir as a mother figure, and he had to admit that keeping Gardevoir away from her trainer for such a long time for such an empathetic pokemon made him feel quite ashamed.
After a quick breakfast of granola bars and berries, Jun rolled up his sleeping bag and packed the tent, anticipating the day to come. He headed to the local PokéMart in Wedgehurst, where he picked up a dozen potions. “This is for you, Echo,” he murmured to the tiny Blipbug who was perched on his shoulder.
Echo nuzzled Jun's face, a soft hum escaping as he echoed back, ‘You, you, you!’ Jun chuckled, grabbing the healing items, “No not me, silly, you.” The Blipbug tilted his head, wide silver eyes staring unblinkingly at Jun for a moment then started wriggling in glee, ‘Me! Me! Me!’. Jun had to admit that he found his antics charming, the young Blipbug proving to be a constant source of joy and laughter.
After collecting a dozen potions from the local Poké Mart, Jun embarked on his journey down Route 2. The air was fragrant with wildflowers, and the distant sound of Pokémon calls filled him with excitement. His heart raced as he visualized Echo's training ahead.
Route 2 was rich in vegetation, the air filled with the sweet scents of flowers and the promise of adventure. Jun knew the area well enough from the weeks he had spent here, scouring the surrounding for his perfect starter.
“Let’s get ready for some action, buddy!” Jun encouraged as he set Echo down on the dew covered grass. The Blipbug circled Jun eagerly, its antennae twitching with anticipation.
‘Action! Action!’ Jun heard the soft, rhythmic whispers of Echo’s telepathy.
As they walked, Jun spotted a trio of Seedot lounging in the tall grass. “Looks like we’ve found our first challengers!” he announced, determination lighting up his face. “Echo, you’re up!”
Echo buzzed with excitement. ‘Battle! Battle!’ The little Blipbug inched forward, his head swaying as he made his way forwards aggressively. Jun commanded with confidence, “Sticky Web!”
Echo spat out a clump of silk accompanied by a wave of Bug type energy. The silk unfurled in mid air, enveloping the entire group. The Seedots, caught off guard, was instantly covered in silken strands. As their eyes narrowed in annoyance, Jun called out, “Again, keep it up Echo.”
As the trio of Seedots were liberally covered in silk, they became more and more entangled together, soon they could barely move. With a few Struggle Bugs, the trio of Seedot were knocked out.
“Great work Echo!” Jun praised, “What a great first battle to start off the day.” Gardevoir, ever present, gave a small round of applause, while Toxe, still being held by Gardevoir, was busy examining the surroundings, showing absolutely no interest at the battle that had just taken place.
Jun moved over to the trio of fallen Seedot and brought out his trusty pocket knife and picked up a nearby twig. Using the experience from the day before, he swiftly cut and untangled the three fainted pokemon from the mess of silk and dirt. Bringing out a Potion, he sprayed liberally over their fallen forms.
As the Seedot slowly regained consciousness, he reached into his backpack and brought out 3 small Oran berries, and handed one to each of the Seedot. Watching them waddle away, Jun turned to Echo, patting him gently on the head. Quickly checking his SystemDex, he saw that the first battle had pushed Echo to level 7, Jun got up, brushed the dirt off his knees and asked Echo. “You ready for more?”
‘Battle! Battle!’ was his only response.
The afternoon wore on, and Jun encouraged Echo to face off against different Pokémon. They battled Lotads, more Seedots and the occasional Rookidee, ensuring Echo learned to adapt to type disadvantages. He observed how Echo instinctively began to protect his weaknesses better. Each time a Rookidee swooped in for an attack, Echo would use his heavy head as a pivot, learning quickly to dodge or redirect the strikes.
The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
“You’re amazing!” Jun cheered as they celebrated Echo’s hard-fought victories, though losses came too, adding to the lessons learned. “You’re getting better after every battle!”
Toxel observed from her perch, Gardevoir. Her eyes filled with disinterest and a hint of boredom. She flicked her tail, as if to say that she would rather be cuddled than caught in the fray of battles. Gardevoir smiled knowingly, reaching out to scratch at Toxel’s head gently.
As noon arrived, they found a quiet spot to lunch, Jun checked up on his character page and saw that he had only gained 2 points the entire morning, realizing that the pokemon in Route 2 were probably a little underleveled for the now level 8 Echo, he resolved to move onto Route 3 for the afternoon. Checking on the map of pokemon distribution given to him by Marco, he saw that the pokemon on Route 3 would pose much more of a threat to his Blipbug. Route 3’s common encounters were marked as Machop, Pancham, Rookiedee, Zigzagoon, Gossifleur and Mudbray. These new varieties would surely be a nice challenge to Echo.
Jun blinked awake, his eyelids fluttering like the wings of a Butterfree. He checked his watch, and turned off the buzzing alarm, stretching lazily, enjoying the warmth that cocooned him beneath the sprawling branches of an ancient tree. Beside him, Echo, Gardevoir, and Toxel were just beginning to stir from their post-lunch nap.
“Hey, team!” Jun called with a bright smile, habitually messing with his Blipbug’s antennae. “Let’s get back to training. I think it’s time we move to Route 3.”
Echo chirped excitedly, its tiny body vibrating with energy. Echo had really begun to take to battling like a fish to water, after all, Echo had only hatched a week ago and their journey was just beginning. ‘Route 3! Route 3!’ His little voice echoed in Jun's mind, a joyful affirmation of their new goal.
Toxel, on the other hand, merely shifted positions in Gardevoir’s gentle arms. She cracked one eye open, letting out a tiny yawn. Gardevoir gently stroked Toxel’s head, lulling her back to dreams.
With determination fueling their steps, they set off toward Route 3. As they traversed the winding path, they began to encounter more trainers and wild Pokémon, allowing Echo to spar against some wild Cherubis and Zigzagoon along the way, taking advantage of the Bug typing to give him an edge.
Once they reached the end of Route 3, Jun spotted a Gossifleur basking in the warm sunlight, its curvy leaves lazily swaying with the wind. The flower Pokémon danced among the flowers in vibrant hues of yellow and green. “Echo, prepare for battle.” he announced, confident in his starter.
“Struggle Bug,” Jun instructed, taking a step back to give his Pokémon ample space.
Echo narrowed its silvery eyes, focusing hard. With an adorable warsqueak, he charged forward in a flurry of speed. Jun watched the tiny Bug-type launch an attack against the Gossifleur. Bug type energy surged out from Blipbug's body, yet, to his surprise, Gossifleur barely flinched. It stood its ground as Echo’s attack hit, its petals shimmering defiantly. Echo seemed shocked at the lack of reaction.
“Not so easy, huh?” Jun muttered, his brow furrowing slightly. “Let’s do it again. Struggle Bug!”
Echo reacted with newfound confidence. It released the bug energy again, as the Gossifleur gathered energy of its own, coalescing into leaf shaped projectiles that shot towards Echo. The projectiles crashed in mid air, but Echo's bug type move quickly deleted the grass type energy and broke through, hitting Gossifleur again, this time eliciting a groan from the flower pokemon. Jun fist-pumped the air. “That’s it! Again!!”
Jun watched intently, meanwhile, Gardevoir remained watchful, her keen gaze scanning their surroundings, ever-vigilant to protect her young charge.
But then, without warning, a loud rustle erupted from nearby. Jun turned sharply, a shadow darting between the patches of tall grass.
Moments later, a Machop and a Pancham emerged, their gazes fierce and narrowed. The Machop squared its shoulders, eyeing Echo with a fierce determination. Jun’s heart dropped—three against one didn’t quite seem fair, but life often isn't fair. Jun glanced over to Gardevoir, who gave him an imperceptible nod.
“Alright, Echo! Focus on the Gossifleur and take her out first!” He felt a rush of adrenaline rush through him.
Echo dashed back to the Gossifleur, putting the grass type between him and the two intruders, an impressive tactical maneuver for one so young. Yet, as it prepared to launch another Struggle Bug, the Machop lunged, shoving the Gossifleur aside, taking the chance to disrupt Echo’s concentration.
“Echo, stay focused!” Jun yelled, his voice cutting through the heated air.
But Echo’s tiny body was uncoordinated, caught between the instincts to dodge and finishing his attack, the bug energy around him fizzled into nothingness. The Blipbug stumbled to the side clumsily, as the Machop sent out a Low Kick, sending a cloud of dirt and clumps of grass into the air.
The Pancham on the other hand hung back, sending wary glances at the Gardevoir. Even with her aura retracted, the fully evolved pokemon posed quite the threat in his eyes.
“Sticky web on Machop, then target the Gossifleur, Echo.” As if by instinct, upon hearing Jun's commands, a blob of silk quickly left the Blipbug's mandibles and covered the Machop and the ground around it.
Turning around, Echo rushed to the weakend Gossifleur and quickly knocked it unconscious with a final Struggle Bug.
The Machop, entangled in the silken trap, yelled a cry of annoyance and ripped the webbing from his arms, allowing the rest to hang from his body, before charging at Echo once more.
The battle intensified. Machop used Low Kick again, the move connected this time and sent Echo rolling backward. Jun clenched his fists. Echo couldn’t give up! “You can do it Echo! Use Sticky Web again!”
As Echo launched a fresh wave of sticky silk, it landed successfully, enveloping Machop once more, snagging onto the remains of his previous silken trap. The little Bug-type was starting to get worn down, but the bond they formed showed in his tenacity. In a moment of clarity, Echo began to echo words back to Jun, a cacophony of encouragement he had grown accustomed to hearing.
'Focus! Fight!' echoed in Jun's mind, rallying Jun’s spirit and igniting a spark within Echo. It summoned the strength to press forward.
“Let’s finish it, Echo, sticky web again!” Jun shouted, his heart pounding like a drum.
With newfound determination, Echo unleashed another layer of Silk on the Machop, this time securely binding the fighting Pokemon's movements. The Machop tried to move forward but staggered, losing his footing and finally surrendering to the web.
“Yes! We did it, Echo!” Jun cheered, throwing his arms in the air.
Just then, the Pancham charged, determined to challenge the little Blipbug. But Gardevoir swooped in, swaying with an elegance that radiated strength and protection.
“Gardevoir! Please!” Jun called, and Gardevoir’s eyes glowed with a tranquil power, bouncing off the aggressor with multiple layers of shimmering crystal barrier.
Taking advantage of the distraction, Echo aimed its final efforts at the remaining foe, using a series of Sticky Webs and Struggle Bugs to draw the attention back to the battle at hand.
At last, after a fierce back-and-forth, the last of battling Pokémon fell, defeated but not without admiration in their eyes. Jun felt the air dissolve with the tension, and he turned to Echo, who stood tall with a look of victory, a small but mighty hero among Pokémon. Then Echo wilted as the victory seemed to evaporate the last remaining dregs of energy the little bug had in it's body.
“Look at you, Echo! You did it!” Jun rushed over to check on his partner, his heart swelling with pride.
As he reached Echo, Jun felt something shift deep within, the bond between him and Echo began siphoning his aura before returning it two-fold. Energy enveloped Echo, releasing a flush of warmth and brightness as he transformed. Jun watched in awe as Echo underwent a brilliant metamorphosis before his eyes, evolving into Dottler.
‘Jun.’ he heard Echo's voice within his mind, his partner's voice had changed, it had lost some of its childish naivety but seemed warmer and lower in pitch. It had an almost analytic quality of it, almost a sublimation of its previous overwhelming curiosity.
“Echo.” Jun replied in kind, gathering up the much heavier pokemon in his arms and settling him in his lap. “You did it, Echo.” he whispered in wonder. He had seen pokemon evolution before, sure, but what he experienced just now, through his bond, went beyond words.
Gardevoir joined him, the pride in her gaze speaking volumes about the journey they had undertaken together. Jun hugged the newly evolved Dottler, savoring the moment.
In Gardevoir’s arms, Toxel stretched and yawned again, unfazed by the evolution of her companion.
As the sun dipped low beyond the horizon, transforming the sky into a canvas of colors, the quartet set up camp in a unobtrusive spot on the side of Route 3. Jun sat cross-legged on the grass, his heart full as he watched Echo’s yellow carapace flicker dimly in the fire light. “You worked hard today, didn’t you?” he said, a smile breaking across his face.
‘Yes, Jun.’ Echo responded calmly, the weariness in his voice was evident. His evolution seemed to have removed the tendency to repeat words, Jun admitted to himself that he miss it a little.
“You really did,” Jun affirmed, his thoughts shifting to Toxel. “And what about you, Toxel? Would you like to consider battling?”
She let out a soft squeak that sounded like a dissmissive “no.” Jun couldn’t help but laugh. “I suppose you’ll always prefer Gardevoir’s arms, huh?”
Gardevoir nodded, her understanding eyes meeting his. Jun sighed, looking out over the winding path. The thought he had this morning of allowing Gardevoir to reunite with her trainer tugged at him again.
“Maybe we can compromise,” he mused aloud. “You can stay with Gardevoir while Echo and I train, and if you ever change your mind, you can join us.”
Toxel blinked, considering the proposition before snuggling deeper into Gardevoir’s embrace. Jun chuckled to himself, realizing that she would probably never want to battle, but that was okay.
As the stars began to twinkle in the night sky, Jun felt a profound sense of purpose. With the newly evolved Echo by his side, and Gardevoir watching over them, he was ready for whatever challenges lay ahead in Galar.
