Chapter 10

Chapter 10

Jun wiped the sweat from his brow as he took in the picturesque vista before him. The sun peeked over the rolling hills of the Galar Wilds, bathing the landscape in a warm, golden hue. He had been in the Wild Area for three days, yet the beauty of the land felt endless, with its vibrant colors and seemingly distanced chaos playing out in harmony. Here, Pokémon thrived in ways he had only read about in textbooks. Wild creatures of every shape and size darted, glided, and leapt through the tall grass and flowering fields, but each interaction appeared as casual exchanges rather than fierce confrontations.

As Jun strolled through the Dappled Grove, he couldn't help but marvel at the sheer variety of Pokémon that shared the ecosystem. From the fluttering Delibird hopping around the vibrant grass patches to the skittering Grubbin, feeding from the roots of the massive towering trees, it felt as if this place was alive in ways he had only ever imagined.

Jun paused for a moment, squinting against the sun as he consulted the map Marco had handed to him at the Pokémon Research Center. Three days had passed since his arrival to the Wild Area, and though he had immersed himself in this enchanting world, he had barely scratched the surface. Two sub-areas had been marked on his map, and his heart raced with anticipation for what lay ahead. He had left the Rolling Fields yesterday and spent the afternoon and this morning in the Dappled Grove, but the two massive sub-areas were but tiny fragments of a larger puzzle he yearned to piece together.

Briefly opening his SystemDex, he checked on the changes.

Name: Jun

Age: 15

Talent: [Bug Affinity I]

Pokemon(observed): 191

Pokemon(owned): 1

Pokepoints: 91

He had *observed* 19 different species just in the Rolling Fields and another 5 from Dappled Grove, the two areas being adjacent meant that there was some overlap in species. He had taken the opportunity to give the 2 newly born pokemon some enrichment along the way, teaching them the name of things and briefly introducing each new pokémon they had encountered, as well as allowing them to explore and play under the watchful eye of Gardevoir.

Echo, his starter, had leveled up again this morning, reaching level 3 and Jun was contemplating returning to Route 1 to begin basic battling. As the little bug type seemed quite enthusiastic to explore the world but also was quite obedient during their command training sessions in the evenings.

Toxel on the other hand had reached level 2, but was rather laid back in temperament, considering her shared taste in sour food with Echo, I had narrowed down her nature to either Relaxed or Lax. She was quite resistant to the idea of battling, mostly due to her laziness. Other than brief moments of hyperactivity where she would zoom around like a hyperactive Yamper, she would rather be carried by either Gardevoir or myself, watching the world pass by with half closed eyes.

Beside him, Gardevoir gracefully surveyed the surroundings. Her emerald eyes sparkled with an awareness that made Jun feel both at ease and at the same time heightened his sense of responsibility. She was much higher level than the pokemon in this area, and more than once, he had felt her aura flare as she chased away some unseen threat.

Echo clambered up Jun's body with a yellow marigold clasped between his tiny mandible and perched on his shoulder, yelling excitedly in Jun's mind, 'Flower! Flower!'. "Yes Echo, that is indeed a flower." Jun chuckled and scratched the top of the Blipbug's head, taking the opportunity to playfully ruffle his antennae. Echo neatly swatted his fingers away, then proceeded to munch away at the orange-yellow petals of the flower. The little bug had a knack for bringing lightheartedness to Jun's day, reminding him that exploration wasn't just a task; it was a joy.

Turning around, he spotted Toxel, sprawled out lazily beneath a tree, soaking in the warm sun. Jun chuckled at her nonchalant attitude. Even as Bunnelby and Seedot scuttled about in the immediate vicinity, Toxel showed little inclination to join the fray. Jun understood his Pokémon well; this laid-back disposition was simply part of Toxel's charm.

"Let's see if we can gather more data today," he said to Echo, trying to distract his young partner, who had finished his snack and was attempting to shove the remaining stalk into his ear. He gently pried the offending twig from the baby and took out a pair of compact binoculars that he had recently added to his exploration gear from his backpack. The device clicked smoothly as he secured it to the other side of his belt, opposite of the 3 miniaturized pokemon balls belonging to his 3 companions. "Gardevoir, could you keep an eye on Echo and Toxel? I want to take a look from over those rocks, see if any new species showed up."

Gardevoir nodded, reaching over to grab the Blipbug. Echo quickly held on as hard as he could, broadcasting a sense of rejection to everyone in range, startling the dozing Toxel as he screamed 'Stay! Stay! Explore! Explore!'. Jun winced and quickly said, "Alright, Alright, let's go together then." Smiling apologetically at Gardevoir, he crept carefully toward the rocky outcrop, Echo thrumming with excitement on his shoulder.

Peering through the lenses, he focused on a small group of pokemon in the distance. "Ooh, a group of Baltoys. It's neat how they're just spinning in place, I thought that Baltoys were supposed to be found underground in caves or in ruins, why are they spinning in the middle of a field… I guess Arceus works in mysterious ways."

Echo, upon hearing a new word, pushed his head against Jun's face, 'Baltoy?' he sent in a questioning tone.

"Yeah, here, I'll hold the binoculars and you can look through them." Jun held the binoculars in front of Echo's massive eyes.

"Baltoys are Ground and Psychic type pokemon, they're sandy brown in color and are shaped like a top. Do you see them? They also can be found back home in Sinnoh, but they're really rare, so you need a specialized tool called a PokéRadar to find them. Legend says that Baltoys and their evolution Claydols were actually clay figures made by ancient people, but no one has shown any proof of that."

Seemingly satisfied with the new information learnt, Echo nudged the binoculars away and scooched into his hood. Not long after, his breathing evened out and Jun knew that he had fallen asleep.

Smiling to himself, Jun continued observing the slowly spinning Baltoys until their silhouette in his SystemDex had completely lit up. He then began panning his binoculars, scanning for other species.

Despite the serenity of the previous scene, Jun understood the wild's precarious balance, not every group of pokemon would just stand still for him to observe. Pokémon coexisted with an intensity that danced on the edge of chaos. Just as he swept across a patch of grass, a sudden rustle drew his attention, a startled Oddish stumbled across the field, chased by a rambunctious group of Hoothoot. In that fleeting moment, Jun glimpsed the sublime beauty of nature's dance—the cycle of life, predators and prey intertwined in an age-old rhythm.

Seeing that no new pokemon could be seen from this outcrop, he carefully made his way back to Gardevoir and Toxel, making sure not to jostle the sleeping Blipbug. As he entered camp, he set the dozing Blipbug beside the passed out form of Toxel and signaled Gardevoir to keep a watchful eye on the duo, as he tried to search for new species from a different position.

As the afternoon waned, the two napping pokemon gradually woke up and began to get restless, tussling with each other in mock fights that sent them sprawling in the soft earth at the roots of the tall trees that interspersed the Dappled Grove. Seeing that their energy seemed to be overflowing, Jun gathered the two Pokémon for command training. Although Echo lacked the physical intensity of a battle-ready Pokémon, he was eager to please, executing each command the moment he heard it, his singular focus on what Jun had to teach. Toxel on the other hand would be much more of a challenge, he knew from experience from the past 3 days that getting her to listen to his command wouldn't be impossible, but would require a little imagination and bribery.

"Okay, team, listen closely!" Jun said, his voice firm yet animated. "We'll start with simple commands today. Echo, your enemy is this root here marked with masking tape, let's start with Sticky Web. "

He watched as Echo eagerly concentrated his energy to his mandibles, then spat out a mass of silk that slowly unfurled, but before it fully opened up, it splattered across the tree root, covering half of it with sticky silk. "Not bad Echo," Jun encouraged, "Take a short break first then for the next try, you should try to control the web to completely open before reaching the target, that way, it's more difficult for the target to dodge or escape."

'Open,Open.' Echo responded, indicating that he understood.

Jun turned away to allow his Blipbug to recharge his energy, staring at the Toxel, who stared back with blank eyes.

He sighed, forcing a smile on his face, he said with false cheer in his voice, "Alright Toxel, let's see what you can do."

Toxel continued to stare at him, then lay down, turned over onto her back, and looked away from Jun's gaze.

Jun's eyes twitched, not even five minutes ago she was jumping and rolling around, but once she heard that it was time for training, this was the response. The same thing had happened the previous evening and the evening before that.

"If you complete the training, I'll give you an extra berry for dinner, it's your favorite Salac Berry." Jun whispered conspiratorially to the purple baby.

Toxel's ear flicked a single time before rolling again onto her belly, slowly rising to her feet.

Jun felt a momentary surge of satisfaction, this trick had worked yesterday, how could a man of two lives not be able to deal with a lazy pokemon.

As if mocking him, Toxel, who had gotten up, seemed more interested in a patch of wildflowers nearby than in any training. Meandering over with deliberate steps away from Jun, she sniffed the wildflowers then nibbled at the petals before spitting it out in distaste.

Jun smiled wryly, his sense of superiority dissipating like snowflakes in the sun. Stepping over to Toxel, he started to bargain with her. "How about if you do your training, you can sleep with Gardevoir tonight?" Jun looked over to Gardevoir with a pleading look in his eyes. Gardevoir rolled her eyes at him, before dipping her head in a slight nod, agreeing to help him. Toxel finally looked up at him from her examination of the local flora, she turned to look at Gardevoir, who gave a more conspicuous nod. With an exaggerated sigh, she got up on two legs and grasped onto Jun's pant leg.

Quickly deciding on a move, before Toxel changes her mind, Jun called in a steady voice. "Target the main trunk, Nuzzle!" Toxel bounded forward, sizzling with electricity and brushed against the tree several times, leaving light scorch marks on the trunk.

"Well done Toxel." Jun praised, lifting up and giving the pokemon a hug, he then passed her over to Gardevoir, who also gave a hug, to the baby's delight.

After a few more rounds of training, Jun called it a day. He realizes that while Toxel wasn't ready for real battles yet, every moment spent training was a foundational step in their journey together. Blipbug on the other hand, Jun could see commanding in a fight. He resolved to lead the team back to route 1 tomorrow and let Blipbug challenge the low level pokémon there.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, saturating the sky with shades of lavender and orange, the quartet returned to the out-of-the-way rock face he had chosen as his campsite for the evening. The air was calm, and the shadows from the trees danced in the golden light of dusk. Setting down his gear, he took a moment to appreciate the tranquility that enveloped him.

Jun felt a sense of home in the wild, an acceptance of the unpredictability of life's path. He suddenly thought of a scrap of wisdom that his battle teacher Mr. Letters often shared back in Trainer School "Nature teaches us more than we could ever learn in a classroom."

As night fell, the stars began to twinkle overhead, hinting at the adventures yet to come.
