40. Abis 2

Abis POV Part 2

It was afternoon. The cloudless sky was hosting the shining sun in its full glory. Even when the sky was a silver-white and the sunlight was a diffuse glow, the midday warmth invited people outside their overhead shelters to feel the day. Under it, the grassy plains produced a picturesque scene of calm and beauty.

In one such grassy plain, a grand melee was taking place. Thousands of soldiers were engaged in a bloody battle with each other. The battlefield extended for kilometres. Some of the fights were very eye-catching. Dust was disturbed and dirt was uprooted whenever they went.

Those eye-catching fights were three in number. They had a huge visual impact on other soldiers. Various colourful skills were being displayed.

One of the fighters was rapidly spitting giant fireballs at its opponent. The opponent was running at superhuman speeds and dodging every fireball.

A few hundred meters away from them, another such battle was taking place. This time, it was a clash of ranged attacks.

A sick-looking cultivator was throwing black-coloured gusts at the opponent who was smiling arrogantly. Wherever the black gusts passed by, the grass below turned yellow before disintegrating.

In return, the arrogant cultivate was waving his black sword around and sending small red spheres at the enemy while dodging those dangerous-looking gusts.

His left arm was exposed and its colour was rapidly interchanging between normal and black. It was obvious that he was injured. But even then, he somehow managed to keep his nose towards the sky in arrogance while running around.

The enemy was also not unscathed. Whenever the small red spheres approached the sick cultivator, they exploded into a big explosion with a large boom.

The sick cultivator was making extraordinary efforts in keeping his distance from them. He was bleeding slightly from his mouth. It seemed that he had suffered from internal injuries.

The third battle was much less flashy than the other two. It was a simple clash of brute strength. One of the participants had bulging muscles and had a ferocious expression on his face.

While the other one had a slim body and a dull-looking face. He looked weak as compared to his opponent but his body packed as much brute strength as the opponent.

Although their battle was not as eye-catching as the others, the damage to the surroundings they did was a testament to their high intensity and dangerous battle. Several pits and smashed boulders could be seen around them.

These were the battles of the core formation cultivators. The surrounding area around them was vacant of any soul. Nobody wanted to get anywhere near their dangerous fights. The chances of dying under a stray attack were too high.

The other clashes taking place all over the battlefield were not that eye-catching but they were equally dangerous for their participants.

Abis was in a battle of his own. He was panting slightly and had his face dyed red with blood. He was missing his helmet and had several dents on his armour.

He was holding a long sword from which drops of fresh blood were falling. Faintly shining inscriptions could be seen on it.

Standing in front of him was another foundation establishment cultivator. He was also panting and had a large bloody gash on his chest. He was trying to apply something to his large gash in an attempt to stop the bleeding.

As for why he was not currently being finished off by Abis for attempting to do such a thing during an ongoing battle, it was due to two other cultivators standing near him. They were body strengthening cultivators and were deterring Abis from attacking.

Although they were no match for Abis even if he fought them together but his physical condition was not that great. While the opponent was almost at its peak and uninjured.

This was not Abis's first battle. He had been fighting continuously for the past one hour. An hour had passed since the battle began. Abis was strong, so by now, he had already defeated two foundation establishment cultivators.

He had killed one while the other managed to escape. He had just finished his third battle of the day when he inflicted a large gash on his opponent's chest.

"Ahh. Damn it. Ursus dog, you just wait. I will repay all of the pain I am feeling tenfold." Twisting his face in pain, the Red Horn cultivator cursed out loudly.

Abis did not reply. He just sneered at the opponent's empty talk. He then prepared for his next battle.

A few seconds later, the two body-strengthening cultivators looked toward each other and started running toward him while brandishing their swords.

Abis also broke into a run and reached them before they crossed their halfway distance. He dodged their clumsy attacks and disarmed one of them while kicking another one on his chest.

His kick was so fast and so strong that the opponent was unable to dodge or block it. He went flying and collided with a nearby boulder with cracking sounds.

He fell to the ground slowly and remained motionless. It seemed that he had suffered from many broken bones while having a broken spine was the least of his concerns.

So weak and untrained. Yet they dare to fight with someone like me. What guts. Abis smirked after seeing the kicked opponent's condition and thought inwardly.

After looking back at the fallen foe for a second or two, he turned his head to finish off the unarmed enemy. But just as he was turning his head, he caught a glint of something shiny in his peripheral vision.

His head stopped turning and he looked back towards the source of that glint. It was the boulder with which his opponent had collided.

His concentration was on the enemy previously so he did not pay much attention to some random boulder lying nearby.

Now that he looked at the boulder closely, he saw something shiny stuck in one of its cracks. He immediately focused on the stuck object. It was a red-coloured triangular gemstone and it was shining due to the sunlight.

Abis identified it immediately. His eyes widened greatly and he stood rooted to the spot. He was dumbfounded to the core. This.....this.....a BEAST CORE. THIS IS A BEAST CORE!! WHAT THE HELL!!!

He could not believe his eyes. A miracle had happened right in front of him. He had just found a beast core stuck in some random boulder's cracks. His eyes started shining and gears started turning in his cunning mind.

Just as Abis was in the midst of identifying the beast core, the unarmed soldier was surprised that he was not struck down immediately after his ally was defeated. Surprisingly, neither was he beheaded nor struck unconscious.

He followed the enemy's gaze and focused on some red-coloured object stuck in the boulder nearby. It was some triangular gem that he had never seen before.

His expression turned strange because the enemy was giving preference to some gemstone over his life. He felt offended.

"Beast core. THAT IS A BEAST CORE!!!". He heard a surprised shout from behind him. He looked back and identified the culprit. It was the foundation establishment cultivator they were trying to buy time for.

By now, he had already stopped bleeding. But instead of running toward them to save his life, he was standing at his place with a wide open mouth and bulging eyes. His eyes were so wide opened that they almost fell off their sockets.

The unarmed soldier was not the only person who got attracted by that shout. The shout was very loud and was heard clearly by the people fighting nearby.

They stopped fighting immediately and converged on their position. The contents of the shout were too shocking that they had to stop their life and death battles at once and head towards its source.

Abis's mouth was twitching slightly. A loud-mouthed fool had managed to ruin his plans successfully. Now his plan of acquiring the beast core smoothly became much more difficult.

Combatants from both sides reached their location in a matter of a few seconds. After looking around for a few seconds, they judged the current situation.

Immediately, the soldiers belonging to the opposite camps looked toward each other with vigilant eyes and started walking toward Abis and the injured foundation establishment cultivator.

The soldiers belonging to the Ursus army gathered behind Abis while those belonging to the Red Horn army gathered behind the injured cultivator.

All of them knew a battlefield rule. The rule was about the discovery of precious treasures during a large-scale battle. Whoever found a treasure would keep it.

But if it was being contested by two people belonging to opposite camps, they would be helped by their allies in obtaining the treasure. The allies would also get a small portion of the profits.

"Brother Abis. What a nice find. Congratulations. Looks like our country's future will be bright." A second-level cultivator standing behind Abis congratulated him.

"Yeah. Obtaining a beast core is equivalent to seeding a new Nascent Soul. We will have another king-level figure soon." Another cultivator chimed in.

"We can also sell it to the Ursus clan. We will be showered with wealth. We will be rich." A sleazy-looking cultivator said as his greedy eyes were trained to the stuck beast core.

Similar conversations were taking place in the opposite party.

"Woah there. Hold your horses. All of you are acting as if we already have the beast core in our hands. Instead of daydreaming, we should prepare to fight those dogs who invaded our country." An elderly soldier said.

Although he was a first-level cultivator, he was quite old and had some wisdom. He was also the calmest person there.

Nobody said anything to him and became serious. They tore away their eyes from the boulder and looked toward the opposite party.

Abis had his head down all the time. He was thinking about something. As everyone became silent, he raised his head. He had a bloodthirsty expression on his have and had red eyes.

"All of you. Don't fight us for the beast core. Go away and we won't chase you. Otherwise, the consequences will not be good." He shouted towards the opposite party.

"Who do you think you are? It is you people who should go away. We won't fight you." A fat cultivator came forward and shouted back.

"You know who I am? My name is Abis. Abis means swift. I am very fast. If you fight with me, I will kill you all without any mercy." A crazy expression came on his face and he fully circulated his qi. He was ready for the battle of his life. It was now or never.

"Like we care about fast mice like you. Everyone, attack." The fat cultivator took command of the party. The injured cultivator was already pushed back and was being given first aid. He was in no condition to fight in the upcoming battle.

"Kill them all." Abis immediately accelerated to superhuman speeds just like the third-level cultivator fighting the fire-spitting foe. They were using the same techniques but there was a vast difference in their speeds. Abis was very slow as compared to his core formation uncle.

His other companions followed suit and both the parties collided with each other in a matter of a few seconds.

Thus, in the middle of a great battlefield, a small battlefield appeared with a boulder at its focus. There was a great difference in both the battlefields.

On the larger battlefield, the people were fighting with a sane and logical mind. They did not kill their defeated foes albeit in some accidents and took them as their prisoners most of the time.

That was not the case on the smaller battlefield. The people there were much more bloodthirsty than the ones outside. They were fighting like crazed beasts and leaving no prisoners.

The future of their countries was on the line and they could not let their opponents obtain the beast core. Otherwise, they would all be doomed in the future.

The area around the boulder became extremely contested. Everyone wanted to obtain the beast core and prevent the opposition from obtaining it.

People were perishing and their bodies were being crushed under others' boots. They didn't even have time to retrieve their dead.

The news of the beast core being found and the insane battle taking place around it spread like a wildfire and engulfed the entire battlefield.

People's blood boiled and all of their reservations disappeared. They threw themselves at each other like there was no tomorrow.

This was no longer a common border engagement. It had evolved into something else. It was now a battle that would decide the fate of their countries. It was a battle for their future survival. It was a battle for the better lives of their children. Their battle would decide the fate of their region.

Half an hour later, the area around the boulder was presenting a strange scene. The landscape around it had changed greatly. Some of the land around it had become scorched while some eroded. Similarly, there were also small craters and pits that could be seen here and there.

It was now a battlefield of core formation cultivators. They had slowly shifted their fights near the boulder. The condition of the cultivators was much worse than before. They were switching opponents constantly and trying to reinforce each other.

Their fights have reached the climax and they were overexerting themselves to hurt each other. Abis's uncle had small burns on his face.

The arrogant commander no longer had an arrogant expression on his face. Instead, the arrogance on his face had been replaced by a ferocious expression some time ago.

He was in extreme pain as his body was being corroded slowly. He wanted to turn that sick-looking cultivator into ashes.

The dull-looking cultivator also had many bruises on his face and a broken nose. Both his nose and ears were bleeding.

The enemy cultivators also had similar injuries. In fact, the left arm of the muscular cultivator was broken and hanging by the side. He could only fight without it.

As a result, he was at a disadvantage against the dull-looking cultivator and was constantly being beaten by him.

The boulder was standing intact. None of them dared to launch an attack on it. Even if they knew that a beast core was very hard to break, they still did not dare take the risk.

Just as the arrogant commander and Abis's uncle passed by each other, they made eye contact with each other for a few seconds and came upon an understanding without saying anything.

The fire cultivator was focused on Abis's uncle continuously. He could not let him get near the boulder at any cost. He had already switched his attacking method from spitting fireballs to breathing out a constant stream of fire.

It was much more consuming for his remaining qi but he had no other choice. Thankfully he had slightly higher cultivation than the others and was not worried at all. All of them were about to run out of qi in the next fifteen minutes or so.

Soon, without warning, his danger sense screamed at him and he was forced to launch into a great jump forward. Three seconds later, a small brownish-red sphere landed at his previous location and a larger than usual explosion occurred. A small shockwave passed by everyone and it became dusty.

Taking advantage of this window, the uncle burst out with all his strength and reached the boulder in the span of a few seconds. He took hold of the gemstone while jumping over the boulder and tugged it towards him.

The beast core broke free and came into his hands. After landing, he ran towards the forest belonging to the Ursus kingdom without looking back.

"RETREAT!!" The Ursus commander immediately shouted a command and the army started retreating slowly towards the forest they came from while fighting defensively.

The fire cultivator was the enemy commander. He looked around at his army. Many of his soldiers have fallen. Similarly, the ones still standing were all injured to some degree.

The ferocity of the battle for the past half an hour was too much. Even though the condition of the Ursus army was just like them, his army was in no condition to give it a chase in its homeland.

His gaze then landed on the muscular cultivator. He almost took pity on his condition. One of his arms was dangling by the side and he was beaten black and blue by the enemy.

With an unwilling face, he ordered his army to stop giving chase and retreat. Both of the armies disengaged after it and thus, a large battle came to its conclusion after about two hours since it began.
