32. Shopping

Jacob and his father followed the shop's servant and entered the shop. The inside of the shop was not that crowded. But some people could still be seen browsing through the various types of clothes hanging around.

They were also being helped by various servants standing by. Some were introducing the clothes to them while some were taking their body measurements.

On the opposite side of the entrance, there was a counter behind which another servant was standing. Jacob was sure that he was a servant and not the shop owner due to the clothes he was wearing. He was wearing the same clothes as the other servants near them. The clothes were a bit low quality.

The servant that had led them to the shop stopped and turned back towards them.

"How can I serve you?" He said while addressing the elder.

"We are here to buy some clothes for this young man. The clothes should be a size bigger than him. He is growing quickly after all." The elder replied while motioning towards Jacob.

After hearing that, the servant started looking at Jacob. He inspected him from head to toe for a few seconds and said,

"Which type of clothes do you want? We have both normal and cultivator clothes. The cultivator clothes will be very expensive though."

The elder looked toward Jacob as if asking for his opinion.

"The normal clothes will be enough." Jacob hurriedly said to the servant.

"Very well. Follow me."

They followed the servant to the side of the shop and stopped in front of a clothes hanging stand.

"Our clothes beat the other garment shops in the market in basic quality by a quiet margin. So, you don't need to worry about that. Our shop is well reputed among the people of the city and they all guarantee our high standards.

So, your money will be well spent and you will not regret it. Please pick what you like. The price tags are attached to the shoulders." The servant stepped back after saying that.

Jacob looked toward his father. He thought that his father would pick clothes for him. But the elder simply shook his head and said, "Go on. Pick what you like."

Jacob nodded his head at that and started looking at the various outfits hanging in front of them. All of them consisted of a set of a linen shirt, a tunic and a trouser. Their colours and designs were a bit different from each other. They looked brand new as if they had been made just a few minutes ago.

Jacob looked toward the servant and said,

"Where are the belts and boots?"

"We have a different portion for them. I will lead you there right after you take your pick from here. Oh right. There is another stand here. This one has better quality clothes. You can also look at them." The servant replied while pointing towards a stand near him.

Jacob nodded at that and resumed browsing through the clothes in front of him. After a few minutes, he decided to buy five outfits. Their price range was also acceptable. All five of them cost 60 bronze coins.

There were also a few other outfits he liked but they were very expensive according to him. After checking them out for a minute or two, he came to know that their price was nearing one silver coin.

After that, he decided to check out the higher-quality stand. He knew that they may as well cost many silver coins but it did not hurt to check them out. He walked to the other stand. Even before reaching it, he already liked a few of the clothes hanging there.

He looked through them and liked them more and more. He also smiled a bit while inspecting them. In his heart, he knew that he was not rich enough to buy them right now. But when he would become a cultivator, he would also become very rich. Then, he would buy them all.

Then he looked at their price tags. His smile stiffed at that. He had thought that they would cost at most three or four silver coins. But their cost was between ten and thirty silver coins.

With a longing expression, he stopped inspecting them and came back to the first stand. He picked out the five outfits he had decided before and showed them to his father.

"Silly boy. I told you to pick what you like. What are you doing?" The elder slightly shook his head and picked out the two expensive clothes Jacob was eyeing before in the first stand. Then, he went to the other stand and picked out the three outfits that Jacob was drooling at previously.

"But father. I don't have that much money." Jacob became flustered seeing his father's behaviour and told him that. He kept standing there while holding the five sets of clothes he had chosen earlier.

"Did I tell you to pay?" After saying that, the elder looked toward the amused servant standing near them and nodded.

The servant understood what he meant and motioned the father-son duo to follow him. Both of them followed him to the racks of belts and boots. Jacob was sporting a helpless expression as he followed them.

After picking out a few leather boots and belts, they went to the counter and put everything they wanted to buy on it.

The servant behind the counter quickly looked at their price tags and started calculating.

"That would be fifty-five silver and twenty-one bronze coins, sir." The servant looked towards the elder and said.

At that, the elder took out a golden-coloured coin from his inner pocket and held it out towards the servant.

Jacob became stunned after seeing that coin. Huh.....this.....a gold coin. This is a gold coin. Father is so rich. Jacob thought while looking towards the gold coin on his father's palm. His mouth was wide open with surprise.

If you discover this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.

This was the first time he was seeing a gold coin. He had never imagined that he would see a gold coin in this way. His first ever personal shopping was worth more than a half gold coin. He was shocked to the core.

The servant behind the counter did not show much reaction at that but his eyes started shining. He looked towards the gold coin in front of him, then towards the seemingly high-quality robes the old man in front of him was wearing.

"Dear customer, we also have cultivator clothes on the second floor. They are very high quality and very sturdy. They also have some lesser formations inscribed upon them.

Those formations would keep them clean and keep the insects away without needing any charge. Some more expansive ones can also auto-adjust their size according to the user's needs." The servant gave a short advertisement speech after smelling a business opportunity.

"Father. We have bought enough. They will last me for years. Can we stop? Please." Before the elder could reply, Jacob hurriedly said while tugging his father's clothes with a pleading expression.

From the servant's advertisement, Jacob realized that those cultivator clothes would cost dozens of gold coins. He did not know what formations were but judging from their performance, those clothes would be very expensive.

He knew the nature of his father. He feared that if he had not stopped him in time, he would have agreed to the servant's offer.

His little heart was already beating so fast right now. It could not take it anymore if things escalated further. He did not want to let his father spend gold coins on his clothes. Even if he did not know the true extent of his wealth.

Looking at his son's pleading expression, the elder shook his head with an amused expression and said,

"Ok. As you wish."

The servant took the gold coin after hearing his reply and gave him forty-four silver and seventy-nine bronze coins back. The elder put them in his inner pocket and took off his backpack.

They had bought a total of ten outfits. He put them all in the large backpack easily. There was still a lot of space remaining in it.

After that, they got out of the shop accompanied by the same servant that had greeted them at first. The servant was sending them off because of their large purchase. He also wanted to score good points for their shop.

"Have a nice day, respected gentlemen. Please come back next time when you need new clothes." After exiting the shop, he bade them farewell.

The father-son duo started wandering the crowded streets of the market again. Their goal this time was a weapons shop. They wanted to buy a few good bows.

They soon found one. The interior of the weapons shop was quite nice. Jacob could see many types of shining weapons decorating its walls. There were also a few counters where weapons were being displayed with proper introduction.

In addition to weapons, there were also armours being displayed. Jacob was mesmerised by their beauty and craftsmanship.

They bought two good bows, one large-sized one for the elder and one small-sized one for Jacob. In addition to them, they also bought good-quality quivers and arrows. They had to pay twenty-one silver coins for everything they bought there.

After that, they bought many other everyday things including spices, fruits, vegetables, mop, brush, ropes etc. In addition to that, they also bought smithing-related items such as hammer, iron ore, mould etc.

Spices were for giving taste to their hunted meat. They had some of it stored in the basement of their house but it was dwindling fast.

Similarly, vegetables and fruits were to give more variety to Jacob's meals. They could get fruits from the forest but the variety was lacking. Similarly, the smithing equipment was for the elder to smith. They bought as much iron ore as they could carry.

By now, the evening had come. It took them many hours to buy many things. Jacob was very tired by now. His backpack was full of items. He was also carrying a mop with his right hand.

His father's backpack was also full. But he was carrying the heaviest things of their shopping in it. He had transferred all the light things to Jacob's bag and put the heavy items into his bag a little while ago. No traces of tiredness or sweat could be seen on his face.

"That's it. Our shopping is complete. Let us return to the inn." The elder said as he started moving towards the inn.

Jacob did not say anything and started following him. After about forty-five minutes, they reached it. They took much more time coming back as compared to the time they took while going towards the market. This was due to Jacob moving slowly due to the heavy backpack he was carrying.

They went to their room first and put down everything in a corner. After that, they locked the room and came down for the meal. After Jacob ate to his full, they went back to the room and laid down on the bed.

Jacob was tired a bit but not that much. He had been exercising for a few years now. In addition to that, he had also started hunting in the past month. So, his physical fitness was very good. The shopping today did not require much physical activity from him.

So, he did not sleep. After half an hour of rest, he got up and started doing exercises under the gaze of his father. After it, he came back and rested again. This time, his rest lasted for a full hour. It was night by now. Their room had also become dark. His vision was lowered. All he could see was the nearby bed and his father lying down on it.

He thought about lighting the candles but decided not to do that. He did not need to do that right now. All he was going to do was to exercise near his bed. He was not going to walk around in the room.

His father was also not going to get up from bed till the morning. Jacob would light them when he would need to answer nature's call.

He exercised one more time before finally laying down to sleep. He looked toward his father and said, "Father. Now that our shopping is complete, what will we do tomorrow? From what I remember, you paid for three nights to the innkeeper."

"Tomorrow, I will take you on a tour of this city. You will see many exciting things tomorrow." The elder replied without looking at him. He kept staring at the roof.

"Ok." Jacob smiled and became a bit excited. He was expecting many good things from tomorrow. This was the first time he was going on a tour of a city such as this. He thought that there would be many places to see in this large city

With such thoughts, he closed his eyes. He was anticipating many things from tomorrow. But he was also a bit scared.

He remembered everything from last night clearly. It was as if those terrible feelings were engraved into his mind. He was scared that he would feel them again this night. Unknowingly, he fell asleep.

The next day, he woke up early as usual. Fortunately, he did not have any bad dreams last night. So he was feeling quite refreshed and good. He was also a bit happy.

Hopefully, I will never feel like that night ever in the future. With a hopeful mood, he got up and went to the washroom. Unfortunately, there was no bathing facility in the room.

"Are you ready?" The elder asked as Jacob got out of the washroom.

"Yes, father. All ready." Jacob replied while trying to wear his heavy backpack.

"We are not going out to do shopping this time. Let it remain here."

"Ok, father." Jacob put down the bag he was trying to wear and followed his father out of the room.

They went down and Jacob had a simple breakfast. After that, they got out of the inn. Jacob was very excited right now. He would be going to see new things today.

"Father, where are we going now?" Jacob asked with a curious expression.

"It is a surprise. Just keep following me. You will know in a few minutes." Replied the elder while smiling at him.

Jacob nodded towards his father and kept following him silently. They then started walking on the streets. His father took many turns during their little journey. Jacob had already forgotten how many turns they had taken till now.

He did not know where they were right now. All he could derive from his surrounding was that they were in a residential area. He was sure that he could not go back to the inn now without the lead of his father.
