Chapter 10: Like This? ‘Pray for Good RNG’?

Along with its maze-like layout and multi-floored structure, added an extra layer of intricacy to the dungeons within Dungeon Regime. These secret blocks hiding from the player’s sight give out rewards for their keen attention to detail. The rewards could range from some Dungeon Coins to useful items, and some of them even hide lore-related information inside them as well. It’s always welcome to find one of these rooms, but the players won’t be punished for not finding them either.

Due to a bug in the game’s code, a player had reported discovering a in the form of a . While initially an error, the developers had decided to keep it in the game, calling it a ‘feature’. However, the low occurrence chance meant that it became a lost detail in the game’s near endless features.

”All we got for this is a fucking trophy.” Ruelle dragged her feet into the room, trying but failing to quell her murderous chuckles. “I would rather get EXPs for the achievement. I’m going to sell the damn thing once I get out of here.”

Silas chose to remain by the entrance for a moment longer, but he eventually picked himself back up and followed her inside. “Aren’t achievement trophies locked to the players’ ID?”

“This isn’t a game anymore, and even if I can’t sell it, I’m going to find a way.” Deep into the secret room lies two weapons. They hovered a few feet off the ground, surrounded by a soft scarlet glow.

At first, nothing about the items seemed interesting enough for any of them to comment on, but when Crowfest had managed to get a better look at them, she instantly let out a shocked yelp. “WHAT THE FUCK, THEY’RE S-TIER!”

And when RetiZn realized it too, he screamed. “HUH? THEY’RE ACTUALLY S-TIER?”

The Tutorial Dungeon can only give out at most an A-tier item, whether it would be a piece of equipment from the random reward item, or a weapon from its Weapon Room. However, their shrieks were not one of joy.

Dungeon Regime wanted to keep players from exploiting the function, so they introduced the ‘tier-lock’ system, which prevents players at certain levels from using strong equipment to simply breeze through the early or mid game.

A-tier items can only be used once the player has reached Level 10…But S-tier weapons have a level requirement of 20.

The chances of finding an A-tier weapon is already significantly low, at around 2%, but for them to find two S-tier weapons inside a dungeon that shouldn’t even be able to spawn them at all…

Ruelle could only stare in disbelief. “Now I think I’m going to throw up.”

“…We still have to take it,” Silas limped over to the item on the right; an intricate metal-bound book. “They’re S-tiers, after all, even if we can’t use it.”

“Contains the spells of the witches?” Upon hearing RetiZn’s confused tone, Crowfest peered her head over to read the description screen. He took a glance at her, and noticed her brows slowly arched downwards the longer she stared at the translucent window.

”This…this weapon doesn’t have a bonus effect, I’ve used it before so I’m sure of it,” she sounded as intrigued as she was baffled. “Maybe we aren’t totally fucked after all.”

“Check the other one too,” Rez pointed towards the remaining item; an obsidian-black scythe, gleaming a hint of purple around the sharp end of its blade. As per his suggestion, Crow picked up the weapon.

“That’s so vague.” Crow remarked, though without a hint of annoyance in her voice. Instead, her eyes seem to shine brighter than before, the excitement of a child receiving her Christmas present returned to her expression. “But this thing is so cool. Edgy as hell, but SO cool~ I can’t wait to reach level twenty.”

“Can we assume that we don’t need to use them to access the bonus effects?” Rez sounded just as delighted, anticipating more to come from these unexpected turns of events.

With Crow watching him tensely, he summoned the metallic book into his free hand. It had a silver accent crafted in the design of vines and leaves, with an unknown blue material shimmering beneath it. When he looked closer, the azure surface seemed to be moving.

The size and metal made it difficult for him to hold the book with one hand. He dismissed his staff for the time being, leaning his weight onto his uninjured leg. With the book secured in both his grip, he flipped its pages open and watched as the ink materialized before his eyes.

“Woah,” Crowfest muttered under her breath as she stared wide-eyed at the intricate letters on the time-worn papers. Apart from words, pictures of intricate circles and other images appeared alongside them as well. “This is a proper magic book…and it’s in English too?”

”Yeah…” At her words, a sudden realization struck him. “Wait, Crow…we’re speaking, I just realized we’re not speaking English right now.”

She didn’t respond for a moment. “You’re right…What the heck? That’s so weird…”

“You think it’s because of our bodies’ memories…? No, I don’t remember anything about my—Silas’ past at all, so that can’t be right.”

“Me neither,” Ruelle’s brows furrowed into a tight knot as she crossed her arms. “Well, if I think hard enough then I can recall some information…I think we’re just moving on muscle memory.”

He stared at her. “But speaking another language fluently?”

“Well, I don’t feel like I’ve replaced Ruelle, even if they’re still blurry, I remember things that my supposed sisters said, or how I felt when I realized I was getting engaged.” Crowfest tilted her head. While perplexed, she sounded rather calm. “It’s like watching a slideshow from a different perspective…They’re my memories, but also not mine at the same time.”

“…” Since things had gotten hectic the moment they came into this reality, none of them had the chance to properly address their situations. The questions of how and why completely slipped from their minds when the gaze of death loomed over their heads. One mistake, and they could walk down a path of no return. “I want to get some answers now too, but that’s not as important as surviving.”

Crowfest nodded as she lowered her arms. “Yes, I agree. I think we should grab the core from Arachne and leave this place, my maid and your knight are probably still waiting outside.”

“Time moves slower in the dungeon anyway, it probably hasn’t been long since we left.”

“I guess you’re right,” she turned and left the hidden room, followed by RetiZn when he called for his walking stick again, replacing the magic book with it. “Oh yes, we still have the skill book to open.”

As they stopped by Arachne’s silent body, she summoned the into her hands. It had the appearance of a regular leather-bound book, although much thinner and smaller than the . Flipping its pages, it became surrounded by light before disappearing, replaced by a notification screen.

”Oh, this is quite good.” Satisfied with her given skill, Crowfest dismissed the description panel. “A guaranteed fifty percent increase in damage per hit…the speed buff is nice too, I’ll take it.”

”Your luck is unbelievable,” RetiZn took out his own skill book, staring down Crowfest with eyes filled with jealousy. “You should buy the lotteries.”

Hearing his words, she chuckled. “Well…I haven’t won the lottery yet, so I guess my luck only works in games.”

Rez scoffed. “Alright, watch. I’m going to pull something OP.”

Crowfest instantly bursted into a fit of laughter while RetiZn stiffened as he stared at the skill he’d received. “Oh, that’s certainly an ‘OP Skill’ alright, I’m quaking in my boots…FROM LAUGHTER THAT IS—HAHA—“

Rez sluggishly grabbed the system panel before suddenly hurling it across the cave. The innocent holographic plate shattered instantly upon impact, its shards dissipating a second later.

“Haha, seems like you’re not that hurt after all.” Crow wiped tears from her eyes, the grin on her lips still quivering from hysteria.

”I injured my ankle, my arms still work fine.” Rez’s voice sounded creepily calm as he turned towards her. “Now that that’s done, we should move on now, no?”

“Like I’m ever going to let this go,” Crowfest thought to herself, but did not dare to say it out loud. RetiZn’s little smile gave her chills, like a quiet moment before a turbulent storm. For now, she replied with an understanding nod.
