Chapter 44: Avatars

Chapter 44: Avatars

Hundreds of thousands of Units died within moments, insects primarily but the power was indiscriminate as Soldiers, Fungal Zombies, Workers, and Fungal Champions of all types fell as their Fragments were consumed to fuel the great magic of the Sovereign Swarm.

Being born was a strange experience for Nasi, in one moment he had been a single piece of the being known as Mar. One tiny piece out of millions making up one glorious whole, then in the next moment he was being filled. His Fragment was opened up and stuffed with hundreds of pieces until he was one complete whole. One made of thousands that were further polished down until they were no longer pieces. A true individual where before the closest would have been a collective.

A spider in the web rather than a knot or a strand. He was the firstborn, he could feel it and that made him special. Unique, after all if he wasn't then why would he be first? He could feel the others forming through the Swarm, the soul of an entire beehive being stitched back together and given even more mass. A farmer who were a god once now became something else as thousands of fragments filled the gaping casms in his soul.

It was even more fitting that Nasi was in fact a spider. He could his body and opened his various eyes and cameras to see the world through them. He was a Juggernaut, a warrior meant to be the first among equals and the greatest weapon that The Sovereign Swarm could field against their enemies. Nasi the Juggernaut was now born and he would shake the world in the name of the Swarm.

Queen Meath had been out of it for quite some time, first the entire hive had been dominated by some thrall-maker spider, and then they had all been consumed by some kind of...goo. Then came flashes of very confusing memories after every single inhabitant of the Hive had been transformed into uniform worker bees. Drones, Workers, and even the Queen had suffered that fate.

Now, they...no, She was back and in a new body. She could feel Nasi exalting and blustering through the Swarm as he raged about. He had only existed for a few moments before her and she already knew he was going to be trouble. Or at least really annoying. She had an instinct for these things and Nasi was going to be saddled with all kinds of inferiority complexes, oh he was going to be insufferable.

But he was unimportant, first she needed to check out this new BODY of hers. It was similar enough to a queen bee she supposed, enlarged to the size of a house and filled with several mechanical engines to help with flight and efficient energy distribution. Also, the cows that had been absorbed into her had been converted into some kind of fleshsack system.

"My powers better not just be about breeding armies, or I am going to have to deal with flack and jibes from my fellow Avatars."

Queen Meath said more as a way to focus on something else than the complex gestation system that had been placed within her. One made to produce eggs for Soldiers and Workers, another for live births, and one for what seemed to be instantenous births of some kind. Being the size of a large building and equipped with artillery weapons inside of her counted as powers too she supposed, but still it would have been nice to have some more variety.

The Swarm called and Meath would answer, after all she owed her soul to the Swarm and it was because of them that she lived. So without further adue she took off from the decimated area of the forest where she had been born and flew rapidly towards the conquered town of Hor.

----------------------------------------

Old Yoss had been laying curled up in his previous temple in despair when it happened. He felt his already ravaged soul being exposed to another power once again, but he couldn't resist the will of his Sovereign so he just took it. Thousands of Fragments poured into the one connected to his soul in a detestable embrace, and it grew and grew and grew until it was no longer wrapped around his soul no it forced itself into it and began to fill the void that had been left there.

Experiences, memories, perspectives, and a myriad of short lifetimes all blended in with his centuries of existence. It was like churning butter or mixing two fabrics while weaving to create a new whole. Old Yoss kept the name after all it was a good name and most things needed names if they were to succeed in life. Old Yoss had been a nickname which then became a title and then the real name of a god.

But he? No, he did not fit anymore. So much Mar had mixed in that Old Yoss needed to embrace the new times and get a new perspective on things. Zim...that would work and it was plucked from a shard of a shard of a memory deep within one of the Fragments which remembered a time before the Swarm.

Zie had a Sovereign now, and all Sovereign needed Stewards. Old Yoss had been a farmer, a laborer, a father and a grandfather, and that was before zie had become an ancestor spirit and a god. That was relevant working experience wasn't it? Zie was confident that zie could succeed in the role that destiny had put before zim. If a lone farmer could become a god, then why couldn't a former god serve as the Steward or Vizier of the one who had despoed zim?

Old Yoss rose from the floor and noted that zis body had changed over the course of the soul patching. Before all of this zie had been short, much shorter than when zie had been mortal, a mere 3 feet tall and now their height was much closer to 5 feet than 3. There were of course other changes within zis body, but that was going to be a focus for another time. Old Yoss felt zis contemporaries coming to the town, the brash firstborn Juggernaut, and the haughty Queen who could give new life to the Swarm. They would need zis guidance if they were going to lead the hordes of the Sovereign Swarm to victory, as the Swarm had declared war on the entire world.

Much like what one did when one was a Farmer in fact, it was a war against the elements, the soil, and the hazards that came with the world itself. Old Yoss could not have related to this perspective before, but now it all made so much sense to zim, it was all just about broadening ones view of events and then it all became clear. So, Old Yoss stepped out of the empty building that had once been the temple of Old Yoss the First Farmer of Hor.

Out in the town square where the newly converted Subjects started to wake up. Old Yoss the Vizier of the Sovereign was joined by Nasi the Juggernaut and Queen Meath the Destroyer. A title which she had chosen herself no matter what anyone else within the Swarm suggested through the bond. She was the Destroyer, he was the Warrior, and zie was the Vizier. They could all feel Mar radiate pleasure and as one the three knelt down as the Sovereign Swarm made their presence known inside of their minds.
