Snap
I squealed and rolled on the ground in pain, whines and groans coming out of my throat as I contorted my face. The extravagantly dressed lady whom had bumped into me inhaled in shock, amazed that she hadn’t seen me and that I had broken an arm.
Her fur jacket wrapped snuggly around her plump body to protect her from the winter’s biting cold. The clinging noise her jewelry made as she waddled down the street stuck out of the crowd like a sore thumb, and frankly I was amazed that someone rich enough to have clothing and jewelry of that caliber plus an entire entourage would ever even leave their mansions, let alone come this far away from the richer end of the city.
The members of her little group, all dressed in a similar fashion, crowded around, looking down and inhaling in shock as they saw the thinly dressed street urchin, me, wail on the ground clutching my arm, covered by a ragged long sleeve shirt.
“Little boy” She asked worriedly and apologetically, “are you alright?”. She really meant what she said to, a rare attribute in nobles. I looked up, widening my eyes as I saw her apparel.
“I’m so sorry madam. I didn’t mean to please don’t hurt me, I swear I’ll never do it aga-” My almost terrified voice was interrupted by a whelp as I tried to stand up, but ended up clutching my arm in near agony instead. She bent down and put her hands over my own, the non broken one that is, and rose it in the air so it was between us, her gemmed rings’ impressions clear against my hand.
“Don’t be scared little boy, it was my mistake and am sure there is no way I can repay you for pain I have given you.” I looked up pathetically at her, shivering, and met her bright brown eyes pleadingly.
“So y-you won't hit me like daddy?” My question seemed to have to strike a chord with her and she smiled and shook her head.
“No, no of course not. I would never do something so cruel.” The rich lady set my hand back onto the cold dirt stone ground and then reached into her pocket feeling around for something. She took out a small Denarius and placed it into my hand, smiling at me. I looked down at the silver coin and widened my eyes again.
“This-s-s it's a Denarius?!” I began to sob, “Thank you so much miss lady. Thank you.” The combination of my pathetic cries and peer pressure moved the other women's hearts and their hands as their reached into their pockets to do the same. They didn’t give me as much as a denarius, but still a good amount. “Thank you! Thank you!” I said, holding back tears. I tried to stand up, but fell and drug my hand along the side her her jacket, landing on the ground again. I tried to get up again, but this time, the lady offered me her hand to help me up off the ground.
“Go along now little boy.” She said smiling.
“Thank you again!” I said hunched over and dragging my feet into an alleyway nearby, the warm of the coins in my hand contrasting with the cold of the winter, reminding me of the warmth of kindness. I disappeared from their sights as they watched me limp away. “How could anyone be so kind,” I thought as I clutched onto the coins tightly. My back straightened and I reached down to grab my small trenchcoat I had placed on the ground inside the alleyway and wrapped it around myself as a smile creeped up onto my face, “Seriously it must be a crime or something.” I shook my right arm and a snapped twig fell out of the sleeve of my ‘broken’ arm and I stretched out my arms in front of me.
I whistled a tune as I tossed a few gemmed rings in the air and caught them as I put all the money which the kind ladies had given me and a little extra into my coat pocket. As I tossed the rings up over and over I passed a young boy, just skin and bone sitting near the other end of the alleyway. He saw the glimmer of the rings and then looked at me holding out his shaking hands.
“Please sir? J-j-just one?” Huh, a real beggar. Honestly I sorta respect these guys, they actually take the righteous path to earning money in this desolate end of the city. He might die from starvation or hypothermia if I don’t give him anything. I sighed and then smiled at him. “Sorry kid, not my problem.” I kept walking. I heard the sound of cloth rubbing on itself. The sound suddenly became more rapid and was paired with subtle footsteps. I waited a few seconds before sliding to the left. A dull kitchen knife stabbed through the empty air on the right of me. While I don’t enjoy fighting since I’m not the best at it, dealing with a small child would be no problem I extended my arm and struck back, hitting the boy’s head. He fell down onto the ground with more force than I expected. The small knife clattered to the ground and I heard a snap. The boy suddenly grabbed his right arm and squealed. He began to cry, tears streaming down his face. No way. Wow, uh, I swear I didn’t expect to actually break his arm.

He looked down to see why his arm was giving him all this pain, followed by his eyes widening and his cries escalating as he realized what had just happened. Seriously if he keeps doing this than people will notice. One man looks into the alley, holding a loaf of bread, and unlike the others who just keep walking pretending not to notice, runs in. He drops his loaf of bread ignoring me and bends down to help the boy’s wound.
Shit, what a waste of a good loaf of bread. Anyway, I need to get out before I get tattled. I pull up a map of the entire city in my mind and found the quickest route out. I had studied maps until I could think of the layout of the entire city so I could find escape routes in times like this. And fastest way out is… the roof. Of course.
I spun around and looked up, evaluating the wall. I sighed, this will require a bit of magic. I brought up my arms and found a crevice in the brick wall. I pulled up as hard as I could, launching myself up. I flipped in the air so my body was perpendicular to the wall. I focused and a familiar feeling condensed on my feet, casting an unnamed spell I made myself. I extended my legs, planting them onto the wall. Thankfully it was night so the wall had been cast in darkness. The shadows seeped off the wall and became tangible wrapping around my leather moccasins. Now with my feet cloaked in shadows, I bent over, grasping the wall with my hands also, a similar effect occurring to them. I then climbed up the wall, each time a part of my body would near it the shadows would come off the walls to greet them. While I didn’t use it much, using magic, especially my various Shadow Magics gives me a natural, almost comfortable feeling.
The roof approached me and I finally grabbed the ledge, pulling myself up and over the edge, looking down to the alleyway to make sure I wasn’t spotted. The boy’s eyes were wide open, obviously stunned. I gave him a sinister smile and put a finger over mouth, signaling him to never tell a soul or else, and with a broken arm I assume he understood what that or else meant. He disappeared from my sight as my feet landed on the roof and I stood up.
I looked across the skyline of City of Helmsley. Ah this place has a nice view. I could see the dark, poor park of the city, the small transition area where the middle class resided, and the bright and vibrant area where a small amount of huge manors where the Noble in charge of the area and the rich reside. I decided to lay down on the roof and settle down for the night, my trench coat providing all the warmth I would need as I gazed up to the stars.
They seemed so vast looking back on it, but soon I would realize just how big the world really is.
And by soon he means like 2-3 chapters from now :P
