The warehouse on the outskirts of the city stood like a fortress of forgotten battles, its walls stained with memories of violence and betrayal. Tonight, it would witness one more. The moonlight filtered through the shattered windows, casting long shadows that danced across the cold concrete floor. Jackson Valentine arrived first, his every step silent as he navigated the familiar terrain. This place had been a battleground for him before, and tonight would be no different.
His mind was a storm of calculated precision and cold fury. Dimitri Giovanni, the man they were here to protect, had holed up inside with a few remaining loyalists. Aleksander, their former comrade, had finally made his move, setting his sights on taking over Dimitri’s criminal empire. But this wasn’t just business anymore—Aleksander had crossed a line that could never be uncrossed.
The sound of a car echoed in the distance, and Jackson glanced toward the entrance just as his friend and the boy arrived. Gabriel, ever the ghost in the shadows, got out of the car with a fluid grace, grabbing the kid from the back seat. His eyes met Jackson’s with a silent understanding. The two men didn’t need words. They had fought too many battles together, survived too many near-death experiences to waste time on them now.
Together, they moved into the warehouse, the tension between them palpable as they silently checked their weapons, each knowing what needed to be done. They had no backup, no reinforcements. It was just them, and a few of Giovanni’s remaining men facing down Aleksander’s army.
Inside, the air was thick with anticipation. Giovanni’s remaining men were nervous, their fingers twitching on the triggers of their guns. Jackson and Gabriel stepped into the central area, where Giovanni stood waiting. The crime boss looked haggard, his usual air of command replaced by a desperate edge.
“He’s coming,” Giovanni said, his voice strained. “Aleksander won’t stop until he’s taken everything from me. From us.”
“We know,” Gabriel replied calmly, his voice a low rumble. “That’s why we’re here.” Jackson’s gaze swept the room, taking in every detail, every potential threat. Gabe continued, “We need to set up defensive positions. We’ll hold them off as long as we can.”
Giovanni nodded, turning to his men. “You heard him! Get into position!”
While Giovanni’s men scrambled to fortify the warehouse, Jackson took both kids and hid them inside a cabinet in the utility room. He gestured for them both to stay down and keep hidden from view. He closed the doors, making his way back into the warehouse. He took his position next to Gabriel, readying themselves for the inevitable onslaught.
“Stay sharp,” Gabriel murmured to Jackson. The vast, shadowy space was eerily silent, save for the distant hum of machinery. They knew Aleksander’s goons would be lying in wait. Jackson’s thoughts kept drifting back to Emily. He knew she was close, and it gave him slight comfort. Aleksander was somewhere in the vicinity, waiting for the right moment to strike. Dimitri Giovanni’s empire was under siege, and their former comrade, Aleksander, was the mastermind behind the betrayal. The stakes were high, and failure was not an option.
Minutes ticked by, each one more agonizing than the last. Aleksander’s men had arrived, the first wave of attackers emerged from all sides of the warehouse. The silence was shattered by the sound of gunfire, their bullets tearing through the air as they stormed the warehouse. The warehouse became a war zone, the sound of gunfire and screams filling the air. Giovanni’s men fought valiantly, but they were no match for Aleksander’s numbers.
Gabriel and Jackson fought with precision and ferocity, their movements synchronized from years of working together. One by one, Aleksander’s men fell, their attempts to overpower the duo futile. It was just Jackson, Gabriel, and a couple of survivors left. The floor was slick with blood, the walls riddled with bullet holes. But they had held the line, beaten back Aleksander’s forces.
With the last of the goons dispatched, the warehouse fell silent once more. Gabriel and Jackson exchanged a brief nod of victory, but their relief was short-lived. A chilling voice echoed through the warehouse, along with the scream of his daughter’s voice.
“Well done, gentlemen.”
Aleksander stepped into view, a sinister smile on his face. In his grasp was Jackson’s daughter, her eyes wide with fear. Gabriel’s heart sank as he realized the gravity of the situation.
“Let her go, Aleksander,” Gabe demanded, his voice cool, but tinged with desperation. Jackson froze, his heart lurching as he turned toward the sound. Aleksander stood at the far end of the warehouse, a twisted grin on his face. And there, in his grasp, was Emily. Her eyes were wide with fear, a gag tied around her mouth, her hands bound.
“Look what I got?” Aleksander taunted, holding Emily in front of him like a shield. Jackson’s blood boiled, his vision narrowing to a tunnel of rage. He stepped forward, but Aleksander pressed the barrel of his gun to Emily’s temple, stopping him in his tracks.
“Uh-uh,” Aleksander chided. “One more step, and she’s dead.” Jackson forced himself to stop, every muscle in his body tense. He reached out for his daughter, gesturing for Aleksander to let her go.
“I don’t think so, old friend,” Aleksander replied, his voice dripping with malice. “You see, Jackson, you’ve always been a good soldier. But you forgot the one rule we all live by: never leave loose ends. And that’s exactly what this little boy is. A loose end. Hand him over, along with Giovanni, and maybe, just maybe, I’ll let your daughter live.”
Jackson’s mind raced. He needed to buy time, to find a way to get Emily out of Aleksander’s grasp. He glanced at Gabriel, who had vanished from sight the moment Aleksander took his eyes off him. He noticed Giovanni was also nowhere to found. He was either dead, or hiding somewhere watching this scene playout. Jackson knew that Gabriel was in position, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. But they needed to be careful. One wrong move, and Emily would pay the price.
Jackson nodded his head, slowly raised his hands, trying to appear as non-threatening as possible. He moved to kneel down, dropping his weapon to the ground. He placed his hands behind his head, surrendering to Aleksander’s demands.
Aleksander laughed, a cruel, hollow sound. “Do you really think I’m that stupid? No, Jackson. You bring me the boy and Giovanni, and then we’ll talk.”
The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.
He gave a murderous glare to Aleks, wanting to snap his neck. The cold steel of determination in Jackson’s eyes seemed to give Aleksander pause. But before he could respond, a faint sound—barely a whisper of movement—caught his attention. His eyes flicked to the shadows, just for a second, but it was all the time Gabriel needed.
In that split second, Gabriel emerged from the darkness, his gun aimed directly at Aleksander. There was no hesitation, no mercy in his eyes as he squeezed the trigger. The shot rang out, echoing through the warehouse like a thunderclap. Aleksander’s eyes widened in shock as the bullet tore through his shoulder, causing him to stumble. But even as he faltered, his grip on Emily tightened, and he spun her in front of him, using her as a human shield once more. Jackson’s heart pounded in his chest. Time seemed to slow as he watched Aleksander regain his balance, fury contorting his face.
“You’re a dead man, Valentine!” Aleksander snarled, pressing the gun harder against Emily’s temple. “I’ll kill her, and then I’ll kill you!”
Before Aleksander could make good on his threat, Jackson saw his opening. With a speed born of desperation, he lunged forward, his hand striking out like lightning. He grabbed the barrel of Aleksander’s gun, twisting it away from Emily’s head as he slammed his fist into Aleksander’s jaw with bone-crunching force.
Aleksander staggered, his grip on Emily loosening just enough for Jackson to yank her free. He pushed her behind him, shielding her with his body as he faced down his former comrade.
“Run!” Gabe yelled somewhere, his voice harsh with urgency. Emily hesitated for a heartbeat, fear and confusion warring in her eyes. But then she turned and fled, her small figure disappearing into the shadows.
Aleksander roared with rage, blood streaming from his mouth as he raised his gun to fire at Emily’s retreating form. But before he could pull the trigger, Gabriel fired again, this time hitting Aleksander in the leg. The shot sent him crashing to the ground, his gun skittering out of reach.
Jackson didn’t give Aleksander a chance to recover. He was on him in an instant, his hands closing around Aleksander’s throat, squeezing with a ferocity that left no room for doubt.
A murderous rage twisted Jackson's face. If he could speak, he'd remind Aleksander never to fuck with his family again. Aleksander’s eyes bulged, his hands clawing at Jackson’s grip, but it was no use. Jackson’s rage was a force of nature, unstoppable, unrelenting. He squeezed harder, his vision narrowing to a single point—Aleksander’s life slipping away under his hands. But just as Aleksander’s struggles began to weaken, Jackson felt a hand on his shoulder. Gabriel’s voice cut through the red haze of anger.
“Jackson. Let him go.” It took every ounce of willpower Jackson had, but he finally released Aleksander, shoving him to the ground. Aleksander gasped for air, clutching his throat, his eyes filled with hatred.
“You should have killed me,” Aleksander spat, his voice a rasping whisper. “You’re a fool, Valentine. This isn’t over. I will kill you all!” Gabriel stepped out of the shadows, his gun trained on Aleksander.
“It’s over, Aleksander. Surrender, or the next shot won’t be in your leg and shoulder.” Defeated and outnumbered, Aleksander’s expression a mix of rage and resignation. Gabriel and Jackson quickly secured him, ensuring he couldn’t escape. Gabe glanced around the warehouse, now littered with the remnants of their battle.
“Giovanni’s empire is safe, for now. But we need to stay vigilant. There will always be threats.”
Jackson stared down at him, his expression cold. He turned away from Aleksander, knowing that Gabriel would handle the rest. He had only one thought now—finding Emily, making sure she was safe. As he moved toward the shadows where Emily had disappeared, he heard the faint sound of Gabriel’s footsteps behind him.
Jackson found Devon hugging Emily tight, almost protecting her from outside forces. They were huddled in a corner, her eyes wide with fear, but unhurt. He knelt in front of them, his heart breaking at the sight of her tears. Both kids stood from the corner, standing in front of the silent man.
“Daddy?” she whispered, her voice trembling. “Is it over?”
Jackson nods his head, pulling his daughter into his arms, hugging her tightly. Devon was off to the side clutching his teddy bear tight. He approached the father and daughter, placing his hand on Emily’s shoulder.
As the adrenaline began to fade, Gabriel approached Jackson and Emily, relief washing over him.
“Everyone okay?” he asked, his voice gentle. He gave his friend a nod. Gabe grabbed Devon’s hand, “Hey, what happened to Giovanni?” He asks looking around. Jackson shrugged, looking confused.
They both glanced up at the second floor, where the office was located. Jackson gestured towards the area. Moving quickly, they navigating the debris-strewn warehouse until reaching the office where Dimitri Giovanni was hiding. The door creaked open, and Jackson stepped inside, still holding Emily close.
Giovanni looked up as they entered. His face was pale and lined with exhaustion, a bullet wound protruding his shoulder. The once formidable crime boss now seemed frail, his power slipping through his fingers like sand. But there was still a glimmer of steel in his eyes as he met Jackson’s gaze.
“It’s done?” Giovanni asked, his voice rasping.
Gabe nodded. “Aleksander is done, handcuffed in the other room. But his men might regroup. We need to get you out of here, now. I'll tell one of your men to take care of Aleks.”
Giovanni stood, leaning heavily on the desk for support. “And what about you, Valentine? What happens to you and the little ones?” Jackson wrote in his notepad, then showed it Giovanni:
We’re leaving the city. Taking them to Atlanta, where they will be safe. Giovanni studied him for a moment, then nodded.
“You’ve done more for me than most would. I won’t forget it.”
Jackson didn’t respond. There was nothing more to say. Giovanni had been a part of his life for a long time, but that chapter was coming to an end. His priorities had shifted, and there was nothing more important than Emily’s safety. Gabe pointed to one of the guards.
“You, grab Aleks and make sure he is secured." He nodded at Gabe, leaving the room to grab Aleksander and take him to where ever to be interrogated.
"Let’s move,” Gabriel said, cutting through the tension. “We’ve got a couple cars stashed outside. We’ll take Giovanni to a safe house, then head out of the city.”
They exited the office, Giovanni’s remaining men falling in line behind them as they made their way through the warehouse and out into the cold morning air. The sun was just rising, the city eerily quiet, as if the chaos of the night had drained all the life from it.
Gabriel lifted the garage door, revealing a car hidden inside. He opened the passenger door, ushering Giovanni in the seat carefully. Another car was parked in an alleyway, where Jackson carefully secured his daughter and Devon in the back seat before returning to Gabe.
“I’ll take Giovanni to the safe house,” Gabriel said. “You need to get the kids out of here, now. The longer you stay, the more danger they are in.”
Jackson hesitated, his protective instincts warring with the need to finish the job. But Gabriel was right. Emily had to come first. Giovanni had his own men to protect him, but Emily only had him. He grabs his friend’s shoulder, giving it a squeeze. He mouthed, “Take care.”
“I will,” Gabriel replied. “I’ll meet you in Atlanta. Just…make sure you both get there.”
Jackson nodded, his resolve hardening. With that, Gabriel slipped into the driver’s seat, and the car pulled out the garage, driving into the streets disappearing into the early morning fog. Jackson watched it go, his heart heavy with the weight of everything he had left behind.
He returned to his own car, where Emily and Devon waited, her eyes wide and scared. He slid into the driver’s seat, giving her a reassuring smile as he started the engine. He pulled out of alley, into the streets. As he drove away from the warehouse, the city’s skyline shrinking in the rear-view mirror, he felt a strange sense of peace wash over him.
He wasn’t done yet, not by a long shot, but he had Emily with him, and that was all that mattered. The road to Atlanta would be long, and the future was uncertain, but Jackson Valentine had made a promise to his daughter.
And no matter what it took, he would keep her safe.
