Chapter 7: Overdoing

Chapter 7: Overdoing

One day, in a certain company in Japan, one of their data specialists was busy typing on his keyboard when he heard a ping on his speaker. He quickly noticed the system message telling him someone emailed his Wmail account. He paused at his work before checking the email he got.

It was from a new freelance account from TechSeek. Within the email was an attachment. After downloading that attachment, he looked at the contents of what was now revealed as a Viper-based program. He gasped as he tested the program, quickly noticing its smoother operations and quick response time.

Then he used a special tool within his computer to look through its code, and his amazement shot through the roof as he read the codes. No, all of it was simply scripts chained together in a beautiful mesh, optimized expertly. Most combinations even surprised him as it wasn't taught on common college programming drills for Viper.

Whoever made this had an extensive knowledge of Viper, was what he thought.

And this one was simply a sample Viper code, an empty canvas and was bare bones enough to be turned into any type of search engine or other type of data analysis engine. This program showed versatility and adaptability due to its modular design where beginners could add what they wanted and it would still work.

They were applying to work for their project. The one for their prototype data analysis machine that could compete with other tech companies of this country.

If this person made improvements to their data analysis system, he was sure it would improve by miles.

He quickly made the call and accepted her application.

----------------------------------------

Three days.

That's how much it takes before I finish that sample Viper program.

Well, it's not actually three days in total. I only delegated three hours of my time coding before going back to my recreational hobbies. So I only spent nine hours in total working on that simple data analysis program.

I made it open-ended as much as possible while maximizing its function so response delays wouldn't be noticed by the normal people. Regardless of how much data they added to my sample system, it could process it with ease.

I know. I checked it out and it managed to separate a simple topic into small comprehensive lists. Being someone who works using Excel, its effectiveness was immediately noticeable to me even with my lack of programming background.

Scripting language is very strong. It helps me compile a lot of processes that will normally make things hard for me.

At the same time, nine times typing speed helps me finish it within three days. Without this ability, I think it will force me to simplify my sample product.

I don't want to simplify it. I want to show them that it is worth it to choose me for their project. I will take care of their project, and then finish it within four months. It's just a data analysis system, so it won't take me that long if I make the most efficient system for it.

With all of that, I am not surprised when the message I have been waiting for came. With the assigned deadline being the middle of December, I have three and a half months remaining to finish their project.

I started working on it as soon as I got it. It's not like this is the only project I take from TechSeek. Other than that, I accepted seven more projects from other mid tier companies out there who needed Viper specialists.

The amount of money they are willing to pay for a decent result in their project, it will help me with my plans!

----------------------------------------

And so, two weeks have quickly passed. I spent most of my time with my hobbies while using four hours each day on my investments and programming. I have already finished one short project from two companies, and have taken a few more as I felt like I could finish all of it before their deadlines.

Finishing small programming projects nets me 150,00 Yen in the minimum and at least 300,000 Yen if I am being generous. It is originally 70,000 to 110,000 Yen, but the people were so satisfied with the results of my work that they tripled their pay to me.

Two weeks of working as a programmer already pays off my investments. If I keep this up and take more projects to earn money, I think I will become a multi-millionaire before December comes.

With the satisfying results from my newest talent, I didn't hesitate and used the money I earned from both investment and programming these past two weeks to learn more programming techniques. Combining both of my earnings from the stock market and from my programming gig made me have a total of 980,000 Yen.

I spent them on three programming talents. The knowledge of logic programming languages, the talent for object-oriented programming, and the talent for procedural programming. Each respectively cost 400,000, 300,000, and 200,000 Yen.

A wide array of knowledge flows through my mind after acquiring those talents, adding to my repertoire of programming skills. With these new talents, a wider variety opens up for me to accept.

But I can't take all of them at the same time. Most of the posted projects needed teams of freelancers to work on, and I felt it would take too long. So I only take projects that only need a single freelancer to finish.

I don't care if the payment is lower than the group project ones. I can earn more due to my typing speed and vast knowledge of programming.

"Ouch..."

Ah... my head hurts once more while I am busy typing out codes for my other programming projects. My nose is bleeding once more. I have to wipe it off again with a tissue.

... Right, maybe I am taking this too far?

A lot of ideas are coming to my mind, but lately headaches frequently occurred to me. I would normally ignore this if I am still a normal wage slave promised with a lot of money but right now, I am someone who has access to a miraculous space called the Shop of the Gods. I have to think about my health more than what I can earn in a single day.

"Ah... dangerous, dangerous..."

I am regressing back to my drive for money. I don't have to hurry up so much just for more profits. I should take a rest.

Stopping midway from my programming time might sound bad, but I have to remind myself that I am not in an office. I am working within my apartment room. Even if there is a deadline, it is still a long time before it arrives. I might as well take it easy.

"... I should also lessen the project I am taking..."

Right. The excitement of acquiring a lot of money blinded me for a moment there. I should reflect on this and stop thinking about dumping more work on my shoulders.

I take a short nap, recovering my ailing psyche before thinking about my next plans for the future. I have to be better than this!

For shame, Tsukiko...

----------------------------------------

After taking a short nap, and stop thinking about counting what I can earn each day, I finally realized that my body can't just keep up with what I can do.

Constantly working while thinking about everything I want to do in an instant is hard. With my fast typing, I just noticed that my thoughts could barely keep up. My fingers hurt a lot, and I didn't notice because of my ability to recover from fatigue whenever I wake up.

I need another ability that will help my body acclimatize with my new capabilities. Just relying on my normal human physique is not possible. Even if my typing speed is unrealistic by any measure, my mind is not. No matter what kind of magical nonsense is causing my fingers to move and type at speeds faster than what a computer can possibly respond to, my normal human brain can barely keep up.

Possibly. That is what I think is happening to me anyway.

I have to rectify this, and then actually relax and moderate myself from working to death.

With those thoughts running through my mind, I enter the mysterious Shop.

----------------------------------------

"You want to enhance your body to get used to your current capabilities?"

"Yes."

"I see... converting that into your currency will cost you 100,000 Yen. Would you like to proceed with this purchase?"

"... That is surprisingly cheap."

I am shocked. I thought it would at least cost five times more than the one she quoted. It really was that cheap?

"Of course. Such a simple thing was basic compared to our other products."

Even with the lack of facial expression from her egg-like shaped face, this mechanical shopkeeper gave a hint of confidence with her clear feminine tone.

"Before that, can I ask. How much does this single purchase enhance my body? And what kind of enhancement will it give me?"

"Of course, that is a reasonable question. For the physical body enhancement, the improvements will be additive to your biological functions."

She continues her explanation, saying it in simple words that even me can understand.

Based on what she said, a single enhancement is the same as adding what I can already do with my capabilities. For example, if I can normally exert force to push a heavy object, the boost from my enhancement will be the same as that amount of force, enabling me to use the same force with only half the energy to exert it.

It improves all of my biological functions, which means it will be hard for fatigue to hit me. I will become healthier, and my body will become stronger than ever. Mental exhaustion will also become rarer even if I spend all of my brain power focusing on programming.

Another thing that makes it valuable is that I can buy this enhancement anytime I want. The price won't change she says which means I can enhance my body repeatedly if I become rich.

"Okay, I want to buy it."

There is no reason to hesitate anymore. I purchased it!

----------------------------------------

When my senses came back to the real world, I immediately noticed how clear my eyesight became. My body feels a lot lighter, and even as I dive deep into my consciousness, I don't feel as overwhelmed with my programming ideas unlike the last two weeks.

I quickly go to my computer and write as fast as I can with my keyboard. Then, I notice that my typing speed is still too fast, but my brain can somewhat keep up with it. A single enhancement is not enough. I have to buy more physical enhancements so my brain can keep up with the speed of my typing speed.

"... Wait, why shouldn't I just buy something to enhance my mental capabilities?"

.... I'm an idiot!

I came back to the Shop and bought the mental capability enhancement which was half the price of the physical body enhancement.

I'm truly stupid...
