“Miles, wake up, it’s time to go to school!” my Mom hollered.
“Okay Mom, give me a second!” I half-yelled back, still half asleep.
I got out of bed and got ready for school then, shuffled downstairs, “Are you ready for the first day of school honey?” Mom asked.
“Oh yeah, definitely ready for the first day of Junior year,” I said, not bothering to hide the sarcasm.
“Oh come on, this year will be much better than last year,” Mom said optimistically, looking at me with eyes pleading to make me believe her.
“Yeah…Sure It will… I’m gonna go pick up Connor. I’ll see you when you get home.” I rushed out of the house before she could respond.
I walked to Connor’s house, my mom’s remark echoing in my head. Maybe it will be a good school year. When I arrived at Connor’s, he was already waiting outside his house like he always does before school. Connor and I have been friends since kindergarten. We’ve been through a lot together.
“I hope this year is a lot better than last year,” I mumbled, absentmindedly kicking a rock on the ground.
“Yeah, me too,” Conner sighed.
“Do you think Henry will be here today?” Connor asked.
“I’m not sure, he’s been through a lot lately, with his mom’s death and all, plus everything else going on in his life,” I said in a low tone.
We had just arrived at school, and not much had changed. It’s still the same old smelly school it had always been. Connor and I went in to look for Henry but it didn’t seem like he was there. While we were looking for Henry, we ran into Willow. Willow had always been mean to Connor and I, any time she saw us she would say something snarky or rude. Surprisingly, she just walked past us like we didn’t exist.
“What’s up with her?” Connor asked.
“Not sure,” I said confused.
“We should get to class, we don't want to be late on the first day,” Conner said as we continued walking to class.
We went to class just like any old school day. It was boring as always, nothing interesting happened. Although, when it was lunchtime Connor and I sat at our table together with no one else, until Willow sat down at our table, without saying a word. Connor and I looked at each other like ‘Who
is going to say something to her?’
“So… how is your day going?” I said awkwardly.
She looked at me then she looked back down like she was thinking of how to respond.
“Ok then…” I said quietly so she couldn't hear me.
During lunch, no one said a word. We headed back to class before 5th hour started. Willow came up to me,
“I’m sorry for being mean to you and Conner all these years,” She said quietly.
“Ok…” I said confused.
I wonder why she is saying this to me. Maybe she’s changed? I doubt it how could someone like that ever change? I went to class and I couldn’t stop thinking about Willow, why was she being nice to Connor and I? What does she want from us? I should just forget about it. After school, I started to walk home. Usually, I would just walk home, sit around and do nothing. This time it was different, though, I saw Henry on my way home and he looked awful.

“Hey, Henry, it’s been a while,” I said in a friendly manner.
He turned to look at me, then he ran away as if something had scared him.
“Henry, wait, I just wanted to talk!” I shouted at him but he was already gone. I hope he’s okay. When I finally got home I got a call from mom.
“Hey, I’m going to be home late again, there’s a $20 on the counter for you to get something to eat, I gotta go, love you,”
“Love you too, Mom,” I said with a sigh.
She is always home late because her boss makes her do so much work. I wish she could just quit and find a different job. I called Connor to see if he wanted to hang out.
“Hey Connor, do you want to come over and hang out?”
“Yeah I’ll come over, see you in a bit,” Conner replied.
Connor came over and we just did some homework and random shit, then my doorbell rang. *Ring, Ring*
“Coming!” I yelled, running downstairs to see who it was.
“I wonder who it is,” Connor whispered to me.
I opened the door and Willow was standing there. “Hey, can I come in?” Willow says softly.
“Why? After everything you’ve done to us?” Connor said in frustration. How the hell does Willow know where I live?
“Connor, shut up. She already apologized to us,” I said to Connor.
“Yeah, you can come in,” I said in a calm voice.
“So why are you here? What do you want?” Connor asked seemingly irritated.
“Because I don’t have anywhere to go. My sister Summer was put in a coma so I have no one to talk to,” she said melancholy tone.
“Wait, what? Summer is in a coma, how?” Connor asked, clearly confused.
“Connor, you shouldn’t ask, she probably doesn’t want to talk about it,” I said.
“No, it’s fine. My Dad and Summer were in a car accident. Summer had a bad head injury and fell into a coma.” Willow said.
“I’m so sorry to hear that, I can’t imagine how hard that is for you,” I said, trying to comfort her.
“Do you…do you think we can start over and be friends?” Willow said quietly
“If we have to…” Connor said with a sigh.
“Connor!” I retorted.
“I’m just kidding,” Connor said
“Yeah, we can be friends,” I said happily. After that, we went out to get pizza. We were walking and talking about school when something unexpected happened.
“What are you doing hanging out with these clowns?”
“Who are you calling clowns?” Connor shouts
“Why are you bothering us? I told you that we are done, Danny,” Willow exclaimed, tensing up as the rage in her body was hitting its breaking point.
“Oh come, on give me another chance, I didn’t know she was your sister,” Danny said
“That’s not the point, the fact of the matter is you still cheated on me. Now go, I don’t want to see your disgusting face,” Willow shouted to him.
“Hey, Squidward! She doesn’t want you so get over it,” Conner said to him.
“Who the fuck are you calling Squidward?” Danny yelled back.
“Hey, let's all calm down, just leave us alone and be on your way,” I said trying to diffuse the situation.
Danny didn't seem to want to listen, he bolted at Connor attempting to hit him. Connor quickly stepped back and punched his face. Danny fell to his knees visibly pissed. He turned to Connor as he spat out some blood. With zero hesitation he pulled out a knife and pointed it at Connor.
“Stop it, Danny!” Willow yelled.
I ran at Danny and tackled him to the ground and tried to get the knife away from him.
“Miles!” Connor yells,
Connor runs to Danny and gets the knife away from him. I pushed myself up off the ground.
“I think it is time for you to go!” I said, pushing him away, as he ran off he yelled
“I’ll be back!”
“I’m so sorry,” Willow whispered to us, with tears in her eyes.
“It’s alright,” we said.
“I think I’m gonna call it a night and head home,” Willow said softly
“You want us to walk you home?” I asked.
“No, it’s fine, I’ll see you guys at school tomorrow bye,” she said
“See you at school” Conner and I said to her.
Connor and I head home as well.
