The Returner’s One Millionth Life
Prologue - The Day I Didn't Die

Prologue - The Day I Didn't Die

It’s true what they say you know, that one's life flashes before your eyes before you die.

I would know since I'm in the middle of dying.

I'm not even sure of what happened, one moment I'm driving down the road and the next moment I've gone through my windshield and am unable to breathe.

I guess this is why you're supposed to wear your seatbelt.

Well, it doesn't matter anyways. I am only a poor 50 year old office worker after all.

I would even be surprised if my parents even cried at my funeral.

As I'm sitting here dying and watching my life flash before me I've realised how terrible I've been, after leaving for college I never contacted my parents, and I never made any friends after graduating from high school.

But I guess that doesn't matter anymore.

So with that thought on my mind I finally closed my eyes and let my soul drift to the afterlife.

...

  Or that was the plan…

I opened my eyes to find myself in a room that I vaguely remember from my past life, and as I look around I notice two things.

1)My sister is sleeping on the bed next to mine.

2)That she looks about two years old

But that doesn't make any sense, my sister is only about one year younger than me, so that should mean, and as I began to look down I notice that although I am only on a twin sized bed I am only about a third of its size.

  But wouldn't that mean…

“Kids breakfast is ready,” my early riser mom said, interrupting my thoughts.

About two days have passed since I first woke up and I can only say two things for sure, that I am three years old and that I have somehow gone back to the past.

A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

And while I don't know whether this is a curse or blessing I do know that I am going to make the best of this to fix my regrets of my past life.

..

.

About 50 years have passed since I first woke up and my current life has been completely different from my previous one, in this life I have married the girl that I loved and we had two beautiful daughters and I achieved my dream of becoming a famous author.

Today is the day I died in my last life, and even though it should not be the same in this life I have made sure not to leave the house just to be careful.

Yet I have still found myself on the floor with my life flashing before my eyes before I die because of some psycho who busted into my house and stabbed me.

Well, at least this time I don't have any regrets so I guess that I can happily pass on to the afterlife.

  Or that was the plan...

So then why am I 3 years old and in my room again!

  “Hehehe, this can't be good.”

..

.

All of that happened about 1,000,000 lives ago.

If you want to know the breakdown of my lives here it is.

At the fifth play through I lost my mind and became a serial killer and got caught and sentenced to death, on the 100th life I finished learning every language in the world, on the 237th life I finished becoming a black belt in every martial art, by the 300s I acquired a phd in every field of study, on life 436 I played superhero for a while, somewhere in the 600s I found a cure for cancer, in the 800s I helped humans reach mars, and so on and so forth.

And despite the hundreds of thousands of lives I have gone through, two things have remained consistent, the \ welcome returner / sign that appears at the beginning of every single life and the fact that I die on the same day at the same time every single time.

Trust me, I've tested it relentlessly to see if I could live past the time limit, but whether it be exacussion, murder, suicide, or accident they all happen on the same day.

Looking back there have been some ridiculous deaths, like the time when I tried to hide in a forest that just so happened to have a nuke that I developed dropped on it, or the time in which I had to wait thirty years to receive the death sentence, and even the time when I simply slipped while carrying a knife.

However after all of my lives I have finally given up and just decided to go with the flow.

And today will be the day that I die on my 1 millionth life and be reborn in my 1 million first life.

“10, 9, 8,” however, as I began counting down to the time of my death I felt like something was wrong.

“5, 4, 3,” I couldn't put my finger on it but after dying for so many times I have acquired a type of skill that allows me to sense when death is approaching, whether it be mine or someone else's, and for whatever reason my ‘REDACTED’ sense just ain’t tinglin.

“1, 0,” and as my countdown reaches zero I know that my sense was right because instead of dying a box appeared in front of me, the same box that appears before me everytime I start a new life.

And in this box are words that said \ tutorial completed! / And as I read these two simple words the world that I knew inside and out began to crumble.
