Chapter 31: Here comes the dragon.

Kalon sat on the edge of the bed for a few moments and took a deep breath to try to calm himself. For a moment, he thought that his cover was blown before he had even made it into the Kingdom of Ysaven. He was starting to regret ever taking part in the court's plan to spy on the humans.

But he felt relieved as the man helped him to sit. He concluded that someone wouldn't help someone they thought was an enemy sit out of spite. He felt that he was safe until General Einrich suddenly placed his hand on Kalon's shoulder.

"So where do you come from, kid?" He asked in the same authority filled tone that seemed to make people want to tell the truth out of fear of being killed.

Kalon's heart nearly stopped as the sudden question rang through his ears for a few moments. He then took a deep breath and gulped before answering, feeling guilty that he was about to lie.

"I- I-" Kalon stuttered before the door to the room suddenly opened up, and a woman with long brown hair and wearing a red robe walked into the room and looked up at General Einrich with hatred in her eyes.

"Where's the boy? I have ordered from above to not leave you alone with him?" The woman shouted as she saw General Einrich standing over a bed in the room's far corner.

"Order's from above? Who could possibly order me to?" General Einrich turned his head while talking before looking the woman in the eyes and then instantly covering his mouth with his hand.

"Lady Roah? I'm sorry I just-" General Einrich tried to apologise, but the woman raised her hand in the air upon hearing the start of his excuses to silence him and then approached the bed.

"Shut up, you big oaf. And wait outside. I am in charge of the injured, so go and take care of your horses or whatever you actually do. I don't want to hear another word out of your mouth, okay?

"Yes, Lady Roah," General Einrich responded before quickly realising his mistake as she glanced up at him with a fierce look in her eyes.

"Another word." She said once again as she looked up at General Enrich.

Although the woman was much smaller than General Einrich, Kalon could see who was in charge by the look of fear on his face as she spoke. It was as though his whole world had come crashing down around him, and there was no hope anymore.

Without another word, General Einrich left the room and closed the door behind him. Silence filled the room once again as Kalon sat on the edge of the bed, feeling even more frightened than he did before.

His heart rate picked up significantly, and he began to panic as he felt the woman's imposing presence behind him. He didn't know what to expect, but she seemed eager to speak to him, and that scared him. He didn't know what she could possibly want from him, but as the sound of General Einrich's footsteps faded into the distance, the woman spoke up.

"It's okay now. I'm sorry that you had to go through an interrogation as soon as you woke up. We didn't know about anything that went on, but one of our patrols came across the chaos at Rover town a couple of hours ago.

I'm sorry to tell you this but. There were no survivors. The orcs were just too strong, and we couldn't get there in time. I know that it is probably hard for you to hear, but I don't think that you will ever see your parents again." The woman spoke with an apologetic voice.

She was in pain as she had to break the news to Kalon. But the only problem was that Kalon didn't have a clue what she was talking about. He became instantly confused as she spoke and didn't know how to reply.

"It's okay; You don't have to say anything. I will leave you alone for now. But I will come back later to bring you some dinner." The woman spoke out to Kalon before he heard the door open and close behind him once again.

Kalon turned to see that the woman was no longer standing there.

'What!? Where did she go? I didn't even hear her leave?' Kalon thought to himself as he was left all alone in the room. The woman that had just spoken to him made no noise at all as she walked, and that made him feel a little bit confused.

He wasn't even sure if the interaction happened and thought that it might have been a figment of his imagination if not for how real it felt.

He was at a loss for what to say. It was the first time in his life that he had no idea at all what was happening and decided to lay back in the bed and wait for the woman to bring him food like she said that she would but as he lay there thinking to himself and reflecting on what she had said he figured out what had happened.

During his training at the barracks, Kalon had often been forced to look at maps while his teachers talked about the war in between classes. He remembered the name of the town closest to the mountain pass was called Rover town, and the monsters would often rest there in between attacks,

It was an outpost, but it was also a farm where humans would be substituted for cattle and eaten by the monsters that would visit.

He thought about the orcs that Roland had killed when he was dropped off on the road to the mountains.

"That must have been what she meant! Orcs attacked Rover town, and they now think that I am a survivor of that attack. Maybe I can tell them that I am from rover town and I survived. But father might get angry if I don't stick to what he told me to say." Kalon wrestled with his thoughts about what he should say if they asked him again.

But just as he was about to decide, the door to the room suddenly opened once again, and the same woman entered with a tray of food.

"It's dinner time. I hope you're hungry?" The woman asked before sitting the tray down on the bedside. She then walked over to the chair that General Einrich was previously sitting on and carried it over to sit down beside Kalon.

"I hope that it's to your liking." The woman smiled before taking the tray back from the table and holding it in her arms. She then picked up a fork and loaded it with a mouth full of food before reaching over to feed him.

"Here comes the dragon." She smiled as she directed the fork towards Kalon's mouth.
