Prologue

"Ref, time?"

"Two minutes remaining.  White scrum. Crouch. Bind. Set."

"Heave two three, heave two three, break!"

The white number eight peels away from the scrum only to get tackled before the game line by the green number six. A ruck is formed. The ref is shouted.

"Green roll away"

The player does and white secures the ruck. The scrum-half stands beside the ball while the rest of his team get into position. Then he passes to the out-half who receives it and kicks it down the pitch. The white team chases it while the green team's full back also races towards it. The full back jumps for it but suddenly just as he catches it a white player collides with his legs. The full back flips in the air and lands badly on his neck. The referee is there immediately blowing the whistle and shouting to the side lines. The green coaches come racing over  with one of them shouting at the phone at the same time. The rest of the players are gathered in a huddle about ten meters away. Every single one of the twenty year olds are concerned for their fellow player..

Five minutes later an ambulance motorbike drives onto the pitch with its siren wailing. Barely having stopped its driver has already began running to the injured full back. As soon as he is by the player’s side could tell by a glance that this was extremely serious.

"Nobody touch him while I get more help" the paramedic commands with a strong tone of voice.

While the paramedic has been talking into his radio another ambulance turns up, driving onto the pitch without any regard and pulling up beside the crowd of coaches and injured player. A team of paramedics then began to take equipment out only stop when they see what the player's condition. Instead they began to try to gently support his head and neck. Straight after that they put an oxygen mask onto the his face to make sure the unconscious player continues to get a steady supply of oxygen.

"We don't need to do anything else for now, all we can do is wait until an air ambulance arrives." A female paramedic who arrived with the ambulance informs the coaches.

Before long the sounds of a helicopter can be heard approaching the pitch. When it comes into sight a person can be seen hanging from the underside of it. Finally it began to hover above where the injured player lies and in moments three men have rappelled down from it.

"I need information about the player while the others try to get him onto a stretcher so we can take him to hospital. I just need to know the basics such as his name, age, address and any contacts we can communicate with." One of the men said to the crowd of coaches concern evident in his voice.

All the while the already big crowd grew bigger and bigger with people who are unaware of the current situation and are just curious about why the helicopter is there. As the crowd continued to grow in size the referee asked some of the players to gently stop anyone from getting any closer. Just as he had finished speaking the paramedics seem to have finished with everything they are doing. Now the full back is being restrained to a stretcher so that he can't fall out of it when it gets lifted into the helicopter. Then a winch is lowered form the helicopter and is hooked onto the stretcher containing the full back, pulling him up into the helicopter that waited above

Finally at long last the injured fall back was in the helicopter and as the helicopter faded more and more into the distance the crowd began to disperse. Now the pitch that had been so busy half an hour before was completely empty and the only evidence of the match was the huge scoreboard that displayed the unfinished matches score.
