3 - A Gift

A small child sits at the edge of a small balcony, enjoying the view of this cold winter dusk. He wears white woolen tunics with an oversized cloak covering him from the wind. The child has fine silver blonde hair which ends on his shoulders. His legs are dangling from the balcony as a small smile appears in his face.

'To think it's already been two years since I got sent to here... All considered, I would say this new life is nice, awesome, even.' The child looks high into the sky for the first bold stars who reveals themselves at twilight. 'I think everything will be just fine... But who knows, a meteor just might fall on me right now.' He squints his eyes at the sky for a few seconds. Nothing happened. 'Lucky me.' He chuckles to himself as his smile deepens and eyes close. He sits in comfortable silence for a few minutes before a familiar voice sounds from behind him.

"Edward! There you are!" It is his parent's maid, Devi. The tanned woman says with her hands on her waist. "You know you aren't allowed up here." Her gaze becomes stern as she stares at him.

With a sheepish rub of his head and an apologetic smile he gets up. "I'm sorry Devi... I just really like watching the suns- Sleep." His eye twitches for a split second at the slip-up 'Tch, acting like a kid is hard.' He stands there, waiting for a response.

She raises and eyebrow for a moment before sighing and shaking her head with a smile. "Apologies accepted. Now c'mon, your dad has something to show you."

The child know as Edward makes his way towards the maid with hurried steps not wanting to make her wait more. The maid in question holds his hand and begins to lead him towards the first floor of their modest house. The house itself is a two stories tall, medium sized gray stone house. The ground consists entirely out of dark brown wood which is carefully polished by Devi every other day. Edward's mother has a particular fondness of paintings and drawings shown by the many, many paintings hanged upon the walls. The house's furniture is made out of robust oak, all being made with durability in mind. The two floors are separated by a L shaped wooden stair. It has no notable decoration or flair.

Soon enough, the duo arrives at the living room where a Hasseldan man wearing casual white clothes sits on a chair. "Took you long enough!" The man says with a smile and gets up from his chair quickly walking towards the child and lifting him high on his arms. "Do you remember what daddy said last week?" The man gleefully asks.

'Uh, shit, what did he say?' Lucas thinks to himself with panic slowly bubbling at the back of his mind. "Uhhh... That daddy really liked the blue flowers?" He quickly stammered out.

The man puts him down and shakes his head, his smile whoever, never left his face. "I did say that... But no! I said I was going to give you something special!" The crouches down and picks something from the ground which was hidden behind him and excitedly gives it to Edward. The gift was a simple small wooden box with no particular features or decoration. Edward grabs the box with hesitation before slowly opening it.

His hesitation evaporate like it was never there, replaced with happiness once the lid is fully open. Inside the box was a beautiful silver amulet with a shining sapphire embedded into it. Its craftsmanship was so immaculate Lucas genuinely wondered if it was made via magical means. "Woah! Its beautiful! Thank you daddy!!" Edward quickly puts the amulet on before hugging his dad's leg with all his strength. The dad in question is now positively beaming as he hugs his son back. "I'm glad you liked it!" He lets out a hearthy laugh as he pats his son in the back. "I have an idea! Why don't you go show it off to your mom? She should be in our room right now." He lets go of the hug and turns his son around. "Mhm!" Edward says with glee as he runs up the stairs as fast as his little legs can take him. "Wait!" Devi, who was silently watching from the sidelines exasperatedly says as she runs after him.

This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.

A silver blonde woman peacefully sat in her bed while studying a thick sapphire-colored tome, a faint pink sheen covers her figure as she hums to herself. Her peace, whoever, is short lived as the doorknob of her room starts wriggling. "Mommy!" The voice of an excited little boy sounds from the other end of the door. "Pipe down!" An older more mature voice follows soon after, causing the wriggling to stop. "Sorry!" The boy apologizes, his excitement whoever, remains unhampered. A sigh can be heard as the door opens revealing the little rascal Edward and the maid Devi, without missing a beat the boy rushes towards his mom and jumps in the bed before standing up and proudly showing his new amulet. "Look! Look! Daddy gave me this!" He points and looks at the amulet as he speaks.

His mother kindly smiles and puts her tome to the side. "Its beautiful, Eddie. You said daddy gave it to you?" She snags the child down to her side so to prevent him from stumbling and falling from the bed.

"Yeah! He said it was something special!" He gets on his knees and shows his mom the amulet once more. "Hm, let me see it." She holds the amulet's gem with her hand and closes her eyes and, after a second of concentration, a pink sheen envelops her arm as the gem begins to glow eliciting a surprised yelp from the woman as she quickly retracts her hand, her index and middle finger become pale as snow as she clutches her hand. "Marie!" Devi says and quickly makes her way to the side of the bed. "Mommy!" Edward leans forwards with a worried expression. "I'm fine." His mom says while rubbing her fingers. "That amulet is special alright, probably the purest I ever saw." She puts on a strained smile. "Mommy is fine, don't worry."

He doesn't seem convinced. "Your finger is all white! I-I'm sorry!" Edward takes off the amulet and throws it to the side. Devi decides that silence is the best course of action right now and takes a step back. "Don't apologize Eddie, it's not your fault. This is nothing that can't be fixed." The woman tries to ease her son's concern to her best capability. She gets up from bed and reaches out for the amulet, then, puts it in Edward's neck. "Don't throw away what your dad gave to you, it isn't yours nor the amulet's fault."

Edward falls into a concerned silence as he carefully eyes the amulet, as if waiting for it to do something. Luckily for him the amulet does no such thing and simply returns to its dormant state. "Devi, why don't you put Eddie to bed? It's getting late." Night has fully settled in by now, the outside pitch black as the cold winter wind howls. "But-" Edwards tries to argue before ruthlessly being cut off by his mother. "No buts. Mommy will be fine and you are going to get a cold if you keep walking around like that." Her tone leaves no room for argument as she stares him down. "...Alright mommy, good night." Edward lowers his head with a concerned expression. "Good night." She pats him in the head before leaving the room and going downstairs.

"Alright Eddie, let's go." Devi says as she walks to his side and nudges him forwards. "Your mom will be fine, that woman is tougher then anyone gives her credit for." She has a slight smile as she speaks. "Mhm." Edward begins to walk to his room with Devi in tow the walk being a short one considering it is the room adjacent to his parent's room. He takes off his shoes and hops into bed. "Good night Eddie." Devi says while tucking him in and giving him a forehead kiss. "Good night Devi." Edward says and watches as the maid leaves the room and gently closes the door behind her.

'I wonder what was that? That looked like frostbite... I hope she will be fine.' Lucas thinks to himself as sleep begins to overtake him. 'Well, I'll find out tomorrow.' And soon enough, Lucas is out like a lamp.
