Trainee Log, 10th Pilot Division Amano Noboru
Location, Base Cronos
MY ALARM CLOCK BLARED OUT A RINGING SOUND,
I jolted up awake, looking at the alarm clock and pushing a button to stop it. I was supposed to be used to being woken up early, but I haven’t really accumulated it just yet. I looked over at my hung uniform, noticing it was beeping blue as the robotic voice that came with it began saying things.
“Voicemail! Voicemail! Voicemail” the robotic voice kept shouting, I looked at the suit with pure concern and second thinking about this program. “Start the voicemail” I said to my uniform, following the book on our unique uniforms that were written specifically for this uniform. It beeped again, replying “Voice Recognized, Initiating Voicemail from GENERAL Shō to DELTA Team.”. The voicemail then activated with Shō’s hologram showing up from the uniform.
Morning Trainees, This is your Superior talking now. Ahem, We’ve received news that the other countries have also started their own programs similar to ours. We most likely have a hunch that there's a spy within the base, this is a message that the team should keep an eye out for this spy. General Shō out.
I didn’t really think about the voicemail, shrugging it off and getting up and out of bed. I got dressed in my uniform and noticed the time, it was 0825 (8:25) and I realized the time I’m supposed to be at the destination. “OH SHIT ITS 8:25!!” I shouted in my room as I got my boots on quickly and ran out the door, rushing down the hallway and out of the dormitories. “SHIT SHIT SHITTT!!!” I thought to myself throughout the entire sprint, running past other soldiers, engineers, and workforce men and women. I ran towards the elevator so fast I rammed myself into the metal handle bar at the end, hurting my stomach, right arm, and my face a bit. Some of the people there looked at me confused and concerned, I tried to laugh it off saying “Late days…Am I right..?”. I then heard the elevator door open, moving to the front and getting out and checking the floor. “Floor 3, This is the right floor!” I thought to myself as I began running again, trying to find the right room this time.
I ran down the halls looking for the right door when I realized, I have a uniform that is voice activated. “Hey Uniform!” I said running as the suit beeped and a robotic voice came out of it. “How can I help AMANO NOBORU?” the robotic voice said, I then asked the uniform “Can you lead me to F3 R219?” as the uniform beeped again. “Leading AMANO NOBORU to R219” the voice said, giving directions to R219. I followed the Robotic voice’s directions and reached R219. “Thanks for your help” I said to the uniform as it beeped three times, turning off for the time being.
I walked in the room, seeing that my team was there and I just made it on time at 0900 (9:00). “You’re late” Tanaka said towards me, “I wasn’t late, I was on time” I replied with a confident look. She then walked up to me and said straight to my face “Everyone else was here at 0800 (8:00), it’s 0900 (9:00).” as I just stood there, slightly shocked but trying not to show any signs of backing down on my word. She sighed and backed up a bit before turning around, “Let’s just go already” She said, with the rest of them nodding in agreement. We then began to walk to a room that was nearby, “where are we going?” Kumagi said to Tanaka, she replied saying “we’re doing some hand-to-hand combat training.” Some of us in the group seemed more excited than the others. “I can handle hand to hand… I think…” I thought to myself, doubting my skills in fighting.
We then entered a training room, scattered around were large cover spaces that range from squares to cylinders and even large balls that provided cover. “We will be practicing off pilot combat, to see who’s more experienced than the other” Tanaka said to the group, they were all confused at why there was cover for hand to hand combat. “Cap… I don’t get it. Why would there be cover for hand to hand combat training..?” one of the girls asked Tanaka, her response was “Because we’re not doing hand to hand, I asked General Shō if we can do this training instead and he accepted the terms.”.
Half of us were concerned about Shō’s choices in this exercise/training as we were given rifles and pistols that had training bullets loaded. “System, Initiate Alpha Vex” Tanaka said as the system responded “Initiating Training code Vex”, with non-participants (which was nearly half of the group) being pushed up and into a viewing platform. Tanaka, Seki, Kumagi, and I were the only participants in the arena, “Initiating hologram protocols” the system said to the participants, activating a hologram that looked like a battlefield of Tokyo. There was then a countdown for the participants as the countdown counted from 10.
“Remember, we’re in this together, treat this training as if it were a real scenario!” Tanaka shouted, with Kumagi replying “Yeaaahh!!” as the countdown reached down to zero. A large buzzer sound went off, with Kumagi charging ahead with Tanaka following shortly behind. Seki and I followed behind as we took cover. Incoming fire was buzzing over the cover and near it, Seki rushed over to another cover spot with myself giving him covering fire. Seki made it over in one piece, as I got behind cover and checked my rifle. It was a Standard Issue Howa Type 89, with a laser and bipod attachment. “Alright.. Here goes nothing..!” I thought to myself as I waited for the firing coming at us to soften down. Kumagi was with Tanaka in the frontlines, so I jumped over the cover and ran towards a pit, sliding into the pit and getting grazed on the shoulder by a training bullet.
“So much for a training exercise!” I shouted as I heard large footsteps, I looked up and saw that there was a G1 Mech being prepared to join the battlefield. “Oh you got to be fucking kidding me!!” I shouted as the mech dropped from its metal bindings, dropping down from a couple miles up and landing on its feet. The G1 mech that landed was a G1 code-named "Goliath". A mech designed to pick up and throw objects such as sturdy buildings or large boulders, Its original purpose was to help excavate and was originally made for emergencies. I then pushed my earpiece to turn on a radio-like communication to my partner, Tanaka. “Should we call in Rogue-1?” I asked her, as she said “No, there will be a mech arriving shortly after to deal with it”. She then jinxed it with an ally G1 Mech landing a few miles ahead of us, That G1 ally was code-named “Pivot Horizon”. A mech that uses its long arms and shovel-like hands to open and tear its mechanized enemy in half.
“Press on guys!” our teammates said from the viewing platform, as we kept pushing forward. Seki was then hit on the shoulder by a training bullet, falling backwards and dropping to the floor. “OW OW OW!!” Seki shouted as I looked back and saw he was out in the open on the ground. “Man down!” I shouted to them as I ran back, holstering my rifle behind me and dragged Seki over. Kumagi and Tanaka began covering fire for me to drag Seki to them as they were behind a building for cover, after dragging him Kumagi wrapped a white rope around his arm. “Alright, you’re good to go Seki!” Kumagi shouted as Seki sat up saying “Thanks Kumagi!” in a positive way. “Less cheering, more fighting!” Tanaka shouted as she reloaded her Standard Issue rifle and we charged ahead to the finishing line. “Holographic Protocols deactivating” the voice said as the holographic exterior then faded, showing that they were traversing through the training room.

“Congratulations 10th Pilot Division You have finished the Vex Training Protocol” as the rest of the team got down from the viewing platform. The team was complimenting each other with Seki obviously complimenting the others, I stood there with a small smile, before walking to the group. Growing slightly more attached to this bunch I called a group.
1625 : 4:25 P.M.
It was already 4 in the evening, Time seemed to fly so fast when all you do is just hang out, train, and study for a good couple of hours. Seki showed me this trick with a card, supposedly it’s a throwing card trick, anyways, he calls it “The Snapper” trick. Instead of just throwing it normally, he uses his wrist to snap it forward. It sounds like something that I should know, but apparently it’s a common throwing trick that all card throwers use. I left Seki’s room and walked down the dormitory hallway, making my way to Tanaka’s room. I stood in-front of her room door that was plastered with a name tag saying “Trainee Tanaka Koharu”, and I knew it was her room from just two words. What surprised me the most was that she wasn’t afraid of having her first name on the nametag too.
I knocked on her door and waited for a response. I was a little nervous about going into a girls room for the first time. I knocked again and got a response “S-Sorry!” she said from the other side, sounded muffled from the door in-front of us as I heard a bit of rustling before a large thud. “Is everything alright in there?” I asked Tanaka as she then opened the door. I backed up to let the door open and saw her in a t-shirt and some shorts, I stood there like a stone statue from her appearance. “S-Sorry, I was reading a book and I fell asleep! I forgot you were coming!!” She apologized to me, “It…It’s alright..-” I stuttered trying to not stare at her appearance. She looked at herself in the mirror and it took her a couple of seconds to realize it. Her face began to turn bright red as she then immediately slammed the door shut and locked it. “S-STAY OUTSIDE FOR A BIT!!” she shouted from inside her room, just loud enough for me to hear and respond. “Okay, I’ll wait outside then” I responded and leaned onto the wall near the door, waiting for her.
I thought to myself about her appearance, silky black hair, big silver colored eyes, in an oversized t-shirt and shorts.. I felt like I saw heaven itself. I spaced out from the thought of it as I felt a tap on my arm, I snapped out of it and looked over, seeing that Tanaka was now in her uniform. “Are we going now?” I asked her as she then nodded and we left the hallway and walked outside. I noticed her being more nervous than earlier in the day, where she was more bold and had leadership qualities. Tanaka seemed more…Humble, Nervous and unaware of her surroundings, “Tanaka, You seem off today, Are you alright?” I asked her as she looked up and replied “Yeah.. I’m okay”. I then stopped in my tracks and turned my attention to her, she bumped into me but didn’t fall backwards. “Tanaka, you’re more bold and have more leadership in this group, right now you’re acting more nervous than usual.” I said to her as she quickly panicked a bit. Tanaka then stuttered out “I-I-I don’t know what you’re talking about..!” as I looked at her and gave her the “You’re a bad liar” look.
She then gave up trying it as she sighed in grief, “I’m not able to act as cute as other girls…” Tanaka said as I looked at her in curiosity. “Would you mind explaining it?” I asked her politely as Tanaka just looked at me for a couple of seconds, “Will you promise me to not tell anyone then..?” she told me with a serious look. “S-sure, just don't give me that glare down..” I said with a little nervous tone, She looked around to make sure no one was around, we were standing near the edge of the base with a 5 meter drop into the ocean just a step away. The only thing that’s keeping us from falling are some hand railings that were placed as a safety precaution. “I have an Inferiority Complex… I feel like the things I do are only to make others happy. I didn’t choose to lead the group, General Shō chose me to lead for my Tomboy-ish and Leadership qualities.. I wanted someone else to lead but our group doesn’t have the qualities I have.” she said as I was just speechless hearing her story.
For only the two days I’ve been on the base, I’ve never thought that there were other people that didn’t want to do this either, I thought that the other teenagers that were here, were in it for whatever they wanted. But, hearing her story and seeing that she just wanted to stay behind just made me rethink my purpose here. She then bowed and then began walking back over to the dormitories. Half an hour had passed as I stood there and then looked out into the vast ocean, seeing the sun still up for the remaining time it was, I thought to myself… Why am I still here… I just stared into the ocean, trying to think about the reasons why I was here, besides war, besides all other things that lead to war. My train of thought was stopped by another person calling me over. “Hey!!” the voice shouted at me, I turned around to see it was Seki as he stopped behind me to catch his breath. “What’s wrong Seki?” I asked him as he needed a couple more seconds before answering to catch his breath. He stood up straight before saying “It’s Tanaka.. She needs help!” as I now had a new priority over my own things.
“Where is she!” I shouted as Seki said “She’s…She’s at the training rooms, room 29A” Seki said as I nodded to him, “Thanks Seki!” I said as I bolted off towards the elevator. The elevator then opened as I ran faster, but then tripped over some equipment and rolled on the ground, hurting my ankle in the process. “Son of a bitch!” I shouted as I quickly got up, seeing the elevator still open, I limped over there as fast as I could and got in the elevator just in time. “Shit…” I thought to myself, looking at my ankle and feeling some blood down my knee. The door opened to the first underground floor where some of the training rooms are held. I limped out and heard commotion, I then limped over to it and saw that there was a crowd around the room that Seki had told about. “29A..” I thought to myself as I limped over and tried to see what the problem was. Before I could even see what it was, Tanaka was then knocked backwards and onto me, falling onto me as two other Trainee Pilots came out from the crowd. “Amano?” Tanaka said weakly, as she got off him and struggled to get up, I got up as well bit by bit as I heard the two other pilots talking to each other. “Is this your partner Tanaha??” The male pilot said with a sarcastic and with a bit of slang in his phrasing. “Are..Are these two giving you a hard time..?” I told her, “No, well sort of..” she replied as she stumbled down to a knee. I got up with myself leaning onto one leg a bit, putting my weight on that leg, they noticed this as the female pilot asked “what did ya hurt your leg ther?” with slang of course. “Maybe.. Maybe not.. But I can still kick your asses if I tried..” I said towards the two pilots, The male pilot then walked up to me and stood face to face. We were about the same height, with his hair being more into a cleaner hair style and being almost pitch black, his eyes were also a nice shade of hazy orange.
The male pilot then tapped his cheek, “If you can hit me here, I’ll let this ‘mix up’ slide, yer know?” he said, chuckling up a laugh. I then shifted up my weight onto both legs for a few seconds, smirking at that fact. I threw a solid right jab to his face. The Male pilot stumbled back, with the female pilot catching him from behind. “Oh you son of a-” The Male pilot was going to say as General Shō interrupted the fight with a blank gunshot in the air. Everyone stopped what they were doing as they all looked over towards General Shō. “Back to your groups!” Shō shouted at everyone as everyone that was present began to scatter. “Except you four!” Shō shouted again, except this time it was towards Me, Tanaha and the two other pilots. Hearing how high Shō must have to be screaming to get everyone to scatter in the matter of seconds must mean that it’s a serious thing that we did. We all were following General Shō, while Tanaha and I were falling slightly behind due to our injuries.
Tanaha and I reached over to Shō’s office along with the other two pilots. We all sat down in four seats as Shō sat in his office chair. “I know I had your parents permission to take you here, but it doesn’t mean you all go on and start fights within this facility.” Shō said in a serious tone, We all felt a shiver down our backs hearing his serious tone and some of us were sweating from it (Tanaha and the Male Pilot specifically). “Gamma Team, Do you have a reason for the fight to start…” Shō asked the two pilots that were from the Gamma Team. Both pilots turned their attention away slightly, to not make eye contact with General Shō. He then turned his attention towards Tanaka and I. Knowing about my injured leg, General Shō showed some sympathy towards me during the conversation. “Go to the medical facility, we can’t have a downed pilot at this time of year and day..” General Shō said as the alarms suddenly began blaring.
General Shō got up and looked out the window, seeing people rushing around. “This isn’t a good time..” Shō muttered to himself as his attention was turned away from us. “What is it General?” Tanaha said as Shō looked over at the four of them. “Get your teams ready, you all are moving out to Shikoku..”.
