Chapter 1

"So, it's your first day. Excited?"

"Yes, sir," Sean spoke with such enthusiasm that a few drops of saliva leaked from the side of his mouth.

"Hmm. I trust you will be as good as your father. Good luck."

"Thank you, sir." By the time the words left his mouth the senior officer was on the verge of opening the door of the cabin and leaving.

Sean was not the type who feels sentimental when someone doesn't respond to his genuine actions but a line of wrinkles formed on his forehead, and no, it was not because of how his senior reacted (Didn't I say Sean wasn't the type). It was because he was focusing on a photo frame on the wall. His father was standing in the picture along with his colleagues who also included the person who just left. Sean's lips widened. He has always been proud of his father and wanted to become a police officer just like him. As far as he remembered, this was his forever dream and it has been fulfilled today. His father would have been so happy if he was alive. Sean straightened his posture and saluted his hero in the photo, "I will do my best dad." With the smile still plastered on his face, he came out of the cabin and was overwhelmed by the environment in the office. There were five counters in the room, three in a row and two in another. Each one was given a specific recognition board. The first one on the left was 'Theft', the second 'Cyber', third one 'Murder'. The second row consisted of 'Violence' and 'Miscellaneous'. Seeing that no one was acknowledging him or guiding him about what is to be done next, he went to occupy the only empty 'Miscellaneous' counter. With mostly excitement and a little doubt he peeked here and there, trying to make eye contact with his co-workers but they looked too busy to even lift their heads from the screen in front of them.

"I thought we don't have high crime rates here..." He was greeted with no answer. It didn't take him long to realize that this was going to be a very long day and hopefully this issue will be resolved easily in the coming days.

Following what others were doing he switched on the system in front of him and logged in using the credentials provided to him. He went through the crimes. There were three columns in which the crimes were categorized, Red, Yellow, and Green (Yes, just like the traffic signals. Should I even describe what this means?). Most of them were checked as resolved but some were still pending. There were just two unresolved ones that were placed under the Red zone.

Case No. 89- The culprit was charged with the murders of his family members and was caught but the verdict is yet to arrive.

Case No. 94- The culprit was charged with thefts, murders, and other things. The person was still under interrogation and due to lack of evidence, there is still no judgment.

Sean looked puzzled. Maybe he should start looking into the pending case but he wasn't so sure. He wanted to ask but the thought of them deliberately avoiding him demoralized him. Should he wait for the orders, is that what he should do? Man, he couldn't even flex his body thanks to all the tension in the air.

"Isn't today the day the prisoner is to be transferred to the Dark center?" The chubby man on the 'Cyber' table spoke out. That seems to have perked everybody's attention. "Man, that's today? I should've just stayed home today." Everyone looked at the 'Theft' counter and sighed looking exhausted all of a sudden. 'Why is everyone reacting this way? Is it something so problematic?'

"Excuse me?" All the heads in the room simultaneously turned towards the door where a tall, slim man stood. He had a deep voice and his pitch-black uniform made the surroundings darker. "I am here for the transfer of the prisoner to the 'Dark center'”.

Everyone started looking at each other and finally, the man at the 'Violence' counter responded, "I am sorry but since we are quite busy today, can this be scheduled for a different day?" The man at the doorway walked closer to us. His more than-average height, randomly pierced serious face, and weapon-loaded vest made him look deadly. "Do you think this is a joke? The day has been scheduled and I will take her today. Now get your ass up and bring her out." The officers at the counters looked like they will piss their pants if the 'man in black' come any closer and the 'Violence' man looked as if he is about to pass out (Gosh, this sounds so funny). With a reddened face, teary eyes, and shaky legs the 'Violence' man walked past me and went further back towards the cells. There were sounds of a few beeps and the bar sliding. Like everybody else, Sean was eagerly waiting to see the person who was the reason for so much fear and commotion. The 'Violence' man walked outside with a mess rather than somebody. The being's head was bowed down and the knotted, dirty hairs moved back and forth with the steps it took. It wore a red jacket and red pants and its hands and legs were cuffed and chained together. 'Is that a girl? It looks like one but I can't be sure yet.' "Okay, now who is going to accompany the prisoner?" The tension in the air rose again. "I will go." Sean's voice was loud and clear. Heads turned towards him and he did think of giving a smile and a wink but chose against it when he saw not relief but questions in his co-worker's eyes. "Great." The 'man in black' signed a file provided by the 'Cyber' dude and grabbed the prisoner's chain pulling it outside. Sean also signed as the prisoner accompaniment and left the station.
