That was the longest string of notifications since coming to this world. It all boiled down to these two companions of mine were stuck with me and I was stuck with them. Which as far as I was concerned was more than worth it. I turned my attention to the golden one first.
"Can you understand me?" There was no response for a beat and I worried that there was something I was supposed to do. I hadn't heard either of the other two dragons speak so I had no idea what a dragon language would sound like. I was trying to come up with a new idea when I heard two voices in my head. The first was soft and a bit high pitched and the second was deeper and rougher. Both voices sounded young almost like a child trying imitate an an adults.
"Yes"
"Yes"
I concentrated on both voices individually before responding. "I nice to meet you both. Do you have names?" I waited but neither voice responded instead I got a feeling of confusion and uncertainty. As if they were trying to remember something but it wasn't coming to them. I gave them a few moments before interrupting. "Would you like me to give you one?"
"Yes" They replied in unison that time and I raised an eyebrow. I wasn't sure but it seemed like they could only answer in single word responses. "What would you like to be called?" Once again there was no response just the same combined feeling of confusion and anxiety. I gazed at the Radiant Dragonette first and the first name that came to mind was Apollo. Her scales and coloring clearly had a sun motif but the name didn't really suit a girl. I searched my mind for something else and then it came to me. "How does Sanaa sound? It means light on the world I came from."
The Radiant Dragonette raised her head as if considering it before flaring her frills. A content sensation passed through our connection and I chuckled. "I suppose that means you like it." I felt a set a claws digging into shoulders and a slight feeling of annoyance that let me know that my other partner wasn't satisfied being ignored. I looked at him and considered it for a moment. "What about Tenebris? If I remember right it was the name of a God of Darkness back home." There was another pause and then the pressure on my shoulder eased. The black dragonling lowered its head.
"Now that we have dealt with that problem What do you two think about doing some hunting and getting some food?" Both dragons let out roars of excitement before launching themselves into the air. I watched them both fly up a ball of light and darkness contrasting against the blue of the sky. Once I found and mounted Rex I went after them. We didn't have to travel far before we came across one of the large mosquito like creatures. This one was nearly twice as big as either of the dragons. I brought Rex to a stop as Sanaa and Tenebris floated about ten feet above me. I started by casting revelation on the creature.
Giant Bloodbug: Level 8
Bloodbugs attack by stabbing their knife-like mouths into their prey. Although they feed upon the blood of their victims, they will also often spray this blood back into their prey's eyes to distort their vision. They are known and hated for their tendency to carry disease.
Based on that we should be dealing with a fast attacker which meant that the magmite would be ideal. I sent a warning to Sanaa and Tenebris and then began casting my spell. The five second cast time gave the bug more than enough time to attack. The bug turned and darted toward me. Before it could cross half the distance twin blurs of black and gold shot forward. Sanaa's frills spread out and a flash of light emanated from her.It was like she let out a miniature solar flare.I squeezed my eyes shut as the light seared my vision. I just barely managed to hold on to my casting. A second later I was able to make a wave of darkness fly forward. I turned my attention to my casting and the manic laughter of the magmite joined the chaos of the battle. Thankfully I didn't need to give it an order. I tried to turn and join the fighting but it was like trying to see with a flashlight in your face. I looked in the corner of my vision and saw an icon that looked like an eye with a line through it and a counter going down from 25.
I watched the count down timer desperately hoping that the trio was able to deal with them. The timer hit 15 and I was able to make out silhouettes. The dragons were keeping their distance and letting the magmite take most of the impacts. They had managed to keep the battle from getting closer to me. I bawled my fingers up into fists while waiting for the timer to hit zero. Each second felt like an additional weight being added to my shoulders. The taste of iron hit my tongue as I ground my teeth. The timer hit five and I could see enough to make out the individual colors on the participants. I began casting. Even the seconds it took for my spell to trigger felt like an eternity.
I turned and watched as my familiars and summon brutalized the bug. Sanaa was wrapped around it like a constrictor snake. Tenebris was clawing out its stomach and the magmite was vomiting molten rock over the creature's face. It took a few seconds before I got the notification of the creature's death. I felt bad for the bug at the end that was much closer to torture then a genuine fight. Either way we had won. I ordered the magmite to pull back. I let the two dragons enjoy their meal and pulled up the notifications from the battle.

I dismissed the message telling me what I had earned without reading it. The seven points points went into luck and the progression went into Lumos magic. Once I was done allocating my new points I got rid of the screen and waited for my companions to finish.
I gave them ten minutes before urging them to return to me. My appetite was absent after watching the way they tore into the beast. Thankfully, they managed to keep the viscera off of themselves and me. I urged Rex toward the first notable location when I heard Sanaa’s voice in my mind.
“Hungry” At first I thought she was asking to do more hunting, but there was a slight inflection in the thought compared to the first time we spoke. It took a second for me to realize that she was asking me if I was hungry. “No, thank you.”
“Strong.” Tenebris’ darker voice was next to speak, and I raised an eyebrow a moment later he continued. “Powerful” I nodded my agreement. “It was a powerful creature. The fact that you both could hold your own was impressive. Even with the magmite, you were both under leveled by quite a lot.” I gave them a look over and they were both fine. Neither had any signs of the battle. Since I couldn’t see the beginning I had no idea what happened but the initial blinding had to have been clutch.
“Good job Sanaa.” I said with a laugh before scratching between her ears. She let out a low hiss, and I received a small pulse of happiness. We'll have to practice, so I don't get caught in the effect next time.. I didn’t see what the attack he did accomplished but I would need to. I sent a desire to hunt to both of them and a moment later they both took the sky. I waited for them to start circling above before I urged Rex forward. We tore through the canyon while I searched for weaker targets. It only took us about five minutes before we found a large scorpion. I pulled Rex to stop and then instructed Tenebris to attack. The small dragonling flew forward until he was just outside of the scorpion’s attack range and then opened its mouth. A sphere of pure darkness formed in front of his mouth. Once the ball was the size of a basketball, he released it.
The sphere made contact with the scorpion a moment later and nothing happened. The sphere surrounded the scorpion, who didn’t react at first. I waited for the scorpion to do something, but Tenebris attacked again, and then I realized it was blind. Tenebris flew in like an eagle scouring the scorpion’s armor. By the time the monster reacted, Tenebris was already flying up into the air. Once he got about twenty feet up, he turned and flew down at it again. The process repeated several more times until the scorpion went still. I waited for a notification to appear, but none came. “I guess there is no notification if I don’t partake in the battle.” I spoke out-loud mostly to myself. “Return” I sent the message through our link and Tenebris reluctantly stopped trying to rip through the scorpion’s carapace. I made my way over and, after a couple of light rays, I managed to carve open the scorpion and place its meat inside my ring.
It wasn’t a lot of food, but it should be enough to keep me going. Once I was done, I looked up at Sanaa and we began a second hunt. It didn’t take us long to find another target. This time, it was a hyena about the size of a small dog. I checked its level, and it was only level 2, so I decided to let Sanaa handle it alone. She flew toward it before flashing her frills. This time, I looked away just before the light could blind me. The poor animal let out a howl of pain and by the time I looked back, it was running around wildly while she flew above it. Just when it began to calm down, she flew down, opened her second mouth, and released a ball of roiling gold and yellow energy. The ball was a bit smaller than a basketball and when it hit the hyena, it exploded, burning the animal’s fur. The hyena howled in pain but before it could attempt to fight back, Sanaa flew down and wrapped herself around her prey like a snake.
She could only wrap herself around its head and neck, but that was all she needed. She squeezed while her top mouth bit into its throat. She was merciless towards her prey and attempted to rip out its throat. It was a bit scary to watch. It only took her a few minutes to rip the life from the creature. Once again I didn’t get a notification, but I was pleased to see that both familiars could handle themselves. In truth, I wasn’t sure if I could beat the pair if they worked together. When she flew back and wrapped her tail around my neck, I couldn’t help but flinch a bit. I took a moment to calm myself before collecting the hyena’s meat. Now that I knew what they could do, it was time to continue the quest. I urged Rex to head due west. Both dragons followed above as he rushed the greenery.
We arrived at the first location sometime later. At first I was worried that the quest was wrong or that I had misunderstood where I was supposed to go. As far as I could tell, this was just a field of stone. I instructed both dragons to search from the air while I made my way forward. It wasn’t until I reached a large ramp that I got the notification.
Notice! You have found: Black Sand Stone Quarry.
A stone quarry would be useful, assuming I could find some people who know how to get the stone out of it. I was just about to head down the ramp when Rex let out a hiss. I was just about to urge him forward when I heard a noise. It was a faint scratching sound. As if something sharp was being run across stone. I urged Rex forward slowly, his apprehension clear while I called my familiars back. As I reached the bottom of the ramp, I caught sight of what was making the noise. It was a cat-sized rat with bone protrusions across its body like armor. I checked the cool down on my summon but was out of luck. Instead, I began summoning my rays of light. I hid the golden glow from the spell behind the stone. It wasn’t until the all four rays slammed into the rat that I realized I fucked up. “I should have gone into stealth first!”
Before I could continue admonishing myself, the rat let out a cry of pain. Everything became silent for a moment and I hoped that nothing else would happen.. A few moments later, the ground began to erupt. One, then two, three and four rats popped out of the ground like badger moles from hell. Rex reared back, and I had to clutch him with my thighs in order to stay on. Another eruption signaled a latecomer to the battle. I looked over and my eyes went wide from shock. The first four were roughly the size of a house cat, but the fifth was the size of a bobcat. Its bone armor was as black as the surrounding stone. We locked eyes and the big son of a bitch rushed at us. I urged Rex to head east, taking us around a large stone pillar. While we moved, I fired a bolt of light, catching one of the smaller rats in the face. Just as I was about to switch to pyro magic, a ball of pure black caught another of the small ones.
I laughed as a ball of gold, and white caught another rat in the side. Both of my familiars dived on to their targets a moment later. Sanaa immediately wrapped herself around her prey, and her frills stood up on end. I squeezed my eyes shut just as a flash of light blinded everything. I heard multiple cries of pain and bone crashing into stone. When I opened my eyes again, I caught Sanaa ripping into her rat with both mouths. A black sphere signaled where Tenebris was. Two more were down and blind, which let the big one for me and Rex. I searched around for the enormous rat and couldn’t find it. I pulled Rex to a stop and the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. I jerked my head up just in time to catch the big son of a bitch leaping down at me. Time seemed to slow to crawl as I brought my left arm up to block the rat’s mouth. I began casting with my right just as it crashed into me. Its weight threw me out of the saddle and on to my back. The pain of its teeth sinking into my flesh made me see white. I concentrated on nothing but finishing my spell. My back hit the ground and a moment later, a gout of flame shot out of my hand.
It took me a second to aim it properly, but when the flames cascaded over the creature, it renewed its attack on my arm. It dug its teeth in and attempted to rip the arm off. I turned to him, remembering something I read about crocodiles. I used my full body weight to pin the rat down. I watched my MP drain down and realized I was going to run out long before the rat was dead. I quickly pulled up the settlement menu and began pulling MP from it. The settlement still hadn’t recovered from the summoning, but every little bit helped. I watched the flames burn at the rat’s head until it released my arm. I pulled back and ended the flow of magic to my spell. I waited to see if the rat would get back up. Once it didn’t, I surveyed the battle. Sanaa and Tenebris were each dealing with two new opponents, while Rex was fighting off a third. Since neither of my familiars was seriously injured, I decided to join Rex in the fight..
I began casting and a moment later, four rays of light shot forward. I narrowed the rays as much as I could and aimed all four into the center of the beast. The rat was thrown from Rex’s back, who immediately turned and bit its head off. The creature's death was so sudden and brutal that it left me momentarily stunned. The exchange took less than two seconds. When I came back to myself, I checked the rest of the fighters. Sanaa and Tenebris were enjoying their after battle meal. I made my way over to a broken piece of stone and sat down. The adrenaline from the battle had faded, leaving only the pain.I pulled out my blood potion and began to drink.
