Evie was walking through the dripping rain, to the bus stop across the street. While she was walking she was thinking about why she was going to this new school. It was all her fault. Evie lived in West Danville in Ontario and used to go to Westwood High until the incident.
It was only the second week of school when a boy in her class named Jake, made her really really angry. Why was her getting mad such a big deal, you ask? Well it’s because Evie’s a witch and sometimes when young witches get mad bad things happen.
First fire surrounded her and Jake, then she picked him up by the collar and dragged him out of the school, with the rest of the students who were evacuating from the fire. That's not even the worst part, then Westwood High exploded. With Jake knowing she was the one who started the fire and calling her a demon it was not safe for her to continue going to that school even though they are rebuilding it.
So now here she was stepping up the steps onto the bus, going to Tri-chime high and this will be the first time Evie has ever changed schools. She was dreading to be the “new girl” at Tri-chime high. What a lame name. She stepped on the bus and sat by herself on the right hand side by the window. She stared out of the window the whole way. As soon as she stepped off the bus, a bald guy greets her.
“Hello Evie, I am Principal Zatch welcome to
Tri-chime High,” Principal Zatch said. Evie shyly waved back with a smile as she zipped up her pink hoodie because of the breeze. Evie hated introductions. As she walked to the school doors another someone greeted her, a boy with big green eyes and dirty blond hair.
“Hey you left this on the bus,” he said and handed Evie her silver lunch kit.
“Thanks. I guess I forgot it,” Evie said, practically ignoring him and pushing past him.
“You’re welcome” he said with a confused smile, then turned and walked the other way.
The bell rang. Evie ran inside, not wanting to be late for class. She was walking so fast, she bumped into a girl with striking, short red hair.
“Hey watch it,” the red haired girl grumbled. Evie kept going, grumbling to herself. She knew she should have asked that boy where the Grade 11 home room was, but she hadn't so she had to guess. Besides, he seemed much too friendly for her taste. She preferred her lonesome corner. She guessed room four, which the door of which said in big bold letters: Mrs. Holidays room. So she walked in. Inside were three rows of two sets of desks, long side counters and a bunch of high schoolers.
“Evie, would you mind coming to the front and telling the class about yourself?” Mrs.Holiday asked. Evie nodded, in sheer annoyance.
“Hi, my name is Evie, that’s all.” she finished awkwardly then started heading to the only empty seat she saw.
“Thank you Evie,” Mrs.Holiday said to her. Mrs. Holiday had dark brown hair and was wearing small circular glasses, the kind that seemed like they would be just for children but on her they looked nice.
“Everyone, say hi,” Mrs Holiday said, her voice bright and cheery.
“Hi Evie,” some of the students said, while clothes simply rolled their eyes.
“Evie, you can take a seat beside Elena over there don't worry she doesn't bite,” she jokes pointing towards the girl in the back row where Evie was already headed. Don’t need directions, thanks. She thought to herself.
“Or does she,” says some boy in the back deviously. Making everyone but Evie laugh. Did he read my mind just now or did the teacher say something I missed? She should probably take notes on listening skills.
“Open up your notes everyone so we can start class. Chop chop everyone, well except for Evie, you dear come with me and we’ll bring Elena,” Mrs.Holiday said. First they stopped at the office to get her a lock, grabbing the schedule off the printer for her while they were there, and then went to the lockers so Evie could pick an empty one. She picked the one next to Elena's on the right. There was just something about Elena that she found relatively interesting, but she couldn’t quite put her finger on what it was. Elena had short blonde hair and pretty green eyes. Evie stuffed all her stuff in her locker, grabbed a snack and headed back to class.
Evie sat alone at lunch trying to avoid any and all attention until Elena came to sit next to her with four boys following her. The first boy Evie recognized from that morning, big green eyes, dirty blonde hair and holding her lunch kit in his hand. That was apparently how she was going to remember him for the rest of her life now. The other three she vaguely remembered from her other classes from that morning. Just their faces though not their names. She was bad with names at times, especially if she didn’t directly talk to the person. One of them had dark brown eyes and just as dark, curly hair, another one of them had light brown hair, pale blue eyes and freckles and the third one had plain brown hair and dark blue eyes. Elena rolls her eyes at the boys.
"Wow Luke, why don't you take your friends and go sit somewhere else? I don’t need my brother’s friends to protect me," She told him. The dirty blond haired one stared back at her. Luke and Elena, their names go well together. Evie can't help but assume that they are twins because they look so similar.
"But we want to sit here. Besides, I wanna get to know the new girl and it’s just fate that she sat at our table," he added cockily. The curly haired boy beside Luke seems fidgety but he relaxed a bit when Luke swung an arm over his friend’s shoulder. Elena frowned, crossing her arms but she didn't argue with him anymore than that.
"So Evie, right? What's your deal, why are you here?" He asked. Evie shifted, slightly annoyed by his direct and somewhat personal questions. She also didn't really want to talk about her old school exploding because of her carelessness.
"Just needed a fresh start I guess," she told them with a shrug. Luke nodded and gestured to his friends one by one, starting with the curly haired boy.
"Well these are my friends, Damon, Conner and Tyler." Evie still hated introductions, shuffling uncomfortably. Tyler got up to sit on the other side of the table next to Elena. Luke gasped dramatically and narrowed his green eyes at his friend.
"Betrayal. It's a harsh thing," he dramatized. Tyler rolled his eyes and kissed Elena's cheek. Evie shifted again. She also hated witnessing affection.

"Girlfriend over friends sometimes man but oh wait you wouldn't understand because you've never had a girlfriend or boyfriend for that matter," Tyler teased. These were Evie's people it seemed. She loved a group with a good sense of humour, that way there was never a dull moment. Luke's face paled and Elena burst out laughing as he sputtered trying to find the right words but none seemed to be coming out. Evie stifled a soft giggle and Conner looked at her, his eyes huge.
"Awe, that was sooo cute. Guys, this one's got a cute laugh, now we oughta keep her," he declared and that gets everyone even Luke laughing. Elena wrapped her arm around Evie’s shoulders with a bright smile.
"I think that we are going to be good friends. Don't you think so?"
…
"You wanna hangout after school?" Luke asked Damon as they walked together to their next class. In the hallway Lexi passed by them and Luke watched her hair bounce as she headed to her seperate class. Damon frowned.
"Why do you even like her? She's such a jerk," Damon stated, his voice low and threatening. Luke turned to stare at his best friend.
"She's not mean to me. Just my sister and they are like enemies so it's different. Plus she's only really a bully when she's with Caroline.” Damon scoffed, shuffling his feet and staring at the floor. Luke raised his eyebrows, Damon had been acting weird lately.
"Yeah whatever dude. She seems like a jerk all the time to me and do you really want to date someone who hates your sister?," he retorted as they sat down at their desks for Bio.
"But she's super smart, pretty too and she can be really sweet. What's not to like about her? Besides they could learn to get along if they had to," Luke said, optimistically even though he knew that would never happen. Damon ran a hand through his hair, looking defeated.
"Yeah I guess, I just don't like her all that much and I don’t think you should be so quick to judge. She’s putting on a mask for you. She knows you like her," he said. Luke raised an eyebrow at him. Damon had never seemed so opposed to something before that he felt the need to lie about it. Lexi was a nice girl, the three of them used to hangout back when Damon and Luke had first become friends so why the change of heart now? Why would Damon lie to him? After school Damon and Luke played games in Luke's room which Elena joined in on a little while later even though he and Damon had a project to do.
"So what do you guys think of Evie?" Luke asked his sister and Damon. Damon just simply shrugged, playing with the sleeves of his sweater but Elena had something to say.
"She seems pretty nice, but there's something about her that doesn't sit well with me," she explained. Luke couldn’t help but wonder what Elena was talking about. She hadn’t seemed that off to him but then again Elena had her powers and they helped her feel things. Or so she said.
“Well I think she is nice and she’s kinda cute too,” Luke stated, winning their racing game with ease. Elena groaned but Damon was silent.
“You think anyone who is even slightly attractive is cute,” Elena groaned. Luke glanced over at Damon, partially ignoring Elena, he seemed fidgety today. Almost like he was on edge. He started twisting up his sleeves again. Luke had caught him doing that three times today. He grabbed his hand to get him to stop, pausing the game momentarily so that the next race wouldn’t start yet. He turned, looking away from Damon, to focus his eyes on Elena again.
“Don’t you have to do the Bio project with her?” Luke asked her.
“Yeah…Oh! You should drive me over to her house tomorrow or something, cuz apparently you still get to drive even though you crashed my car,” Elena complained. Luke shrugged. Releasing Damon’s hand when he tugged on it.
“Mom doesn’t believe you.” Damon snorted and Elena slapped him in the arm. Luke laughed, glancing at Damon. He looked away, laughing softly under his breath. What was up with him?
“Damon, what do you think of Evie?” Luke tried, once the laughing ceased. Damon froze up, staring at the ground with wide eyes as if he’d been stabbed. He glanced up.
“I shrugged, isn't that enough? What else do you want from me?” Luke eyed him suspiciously. He sounded…hostile.
“Dae, are you alright? You sound angry,” Luke conveyed trying not to upset him more but he knew he’d failed when Damon stood up.
“I’m fine! I don’t have to tell you my opinion of people just because you tell the whole world yours!” he shouted at Luke. Luke flinched as he left, slamming the door behind him. What did he say wrong? Elena seemed just as confused, Luke could tell by the look on her face.
“What was that about? Damon never storms out…” She sounded so concerned for his friend that it made him feel extra bad. Luke shrugged.
“I’m not sure. He seemed kinda on edge today. I’m not sure why. I thought about asking him but I didn’t want to make it worse or something ya know?” Luke told her. Elena nodded slowly, looking thoughtful.
“Yeah I get that, but maybe ask him about it tomorrow? I can check with Jackson too, if there’s something going on that will involve us, chances are he’d know about it already,” she offered. Jackson always seemed to be her first thought. They were best friends though so it made sense. Luke nodded slowly, staring at the door. Damon had never yelled at him before, something really bad must be going on. He looked back at Elena and practically stumbled to his feet, reconsidering her plan.
“Actually, no. I’m going to go find him,” he declared. Elena looked concerned.
“Are you sure? He might be really angry and push you away,” Elena cautioned him. He scoffed under his breath as he walked towards the door, looking back over his shoulder at his twin sister’s green eyes.
“It’ll be fine. I can handle a little bit of hostility. I'm used to it. Besides he’s my best friend, I know him better than anyone," he told her with a bright smile as he headed out the door so quickly that he didn’t catch what Elena said under her breath, “If only you’d take a hint.”
It was raining. Of course it was raining. Luke held the door open with his foot as he reached into the closet to grab his raincoat and hurried out. He jogged down the sidewalk, unsure whether Damon would have started walking home or to Conner's house which was closer. Luke headed towards Conner’s, hoping he'd picked right. Sure enough he had and spotted Damon, shivering in the distance. Good grief. Luke sped up a bit until he was walking right next to his shivering friend.
"Damon, you're soaking wet," Luke observed out loud. Damon glared at him.
"No duh, captain obvious," he said through chattering teeth, continuing to walk.
"You can have my jacket if you want. I've got a hoodie underneath at least," Luke offered. Damon paused in his tracks, staring down at the ground. He was shaking at this point.
"You're going to catch a cold. Don't be stubborn," He pointed out. Damon said nothing and Luke didn't wait for an answer this time, removing his raincoat and shaking it off before draping it over his friend's shoulders. Damon turned away from him to pull his arms through. Luke shook his head, laughing under his breath so Damon couldn't hear it. When Damon turned around again he put his hands in the pockets of Luke's jacket and looked up at him.
"Thanks," that was all he said. Luke hugged his arms against his chest as rain rolled down his cheeks.
"It's not a problem. I could...walk with you home?" Luke suggested. Damon shifted, looking away.
"You don't have to. I'll be fine," he argued. There was a pause of silence before he spoke again. "I'm sorry for getting mad at you." Luke had been waiting for that. He smiled, then shivered.
"It's okay." He was starting to get really wet now. "Could we go? It's really cold out here." Damon laughed this time and grabbed Luke's hand.
"Run!" He demanded. So Luke did, they were both laughing now even though they were both extremely cold. The least they could get was that one last moment where everything seemed perfect. Before Luke’s whole world would come crashing down.
