Serin tapped her chin in thought. "That is all I need to know at this moment. We should leave now." Serin tapped her chin in thought.

"Wait. Go where?"

"We need to get her inspected. How we react is dependent on what class she awakened. I'm certain you have been followed to at least Gilcrest. So I want to throw them off the trail as fast as possible. We'll leave now at night under the cover of my skill."

"I'm sorry. I just thought maybe they would be scared of you. That this is as far as I needed to go." Quillis looked defeated as exhaustion threated to overwhelm him.

"They may fear me," Serin replied. "However, that's not good enough. What we lack right now is information. If its some minor noble looking to forcefully adopt your daughter then I could deal with it. However, should the church itself be behind the attack, I wouldn't be enough to even give them pause. So get up we need to move."

Quillis rose with her, but moved as though world was crushing him. Despite their relationship being strained it still evoked an ugly feeling for Serin to see her son this way.

It was way past her comfort zone, but she tried to comfort him. "Relax. No matter what there is always a way past difficulty." She placed a hand on his shoulder and looked him deep into his eyes. "At worse we'll flee to the northern wilds and hide in a dungeon for a few years. At least until she can start leveling. If her class is as good as I'm expecting she'll be able to handle any problems on her own."

"You're terrible at this." Quillis shook his head. Looked up to the ceiling and took in a deep breath. Seeming to be in the process of preparing himself he slowly exhaled. "That was a nightmare to imagine mother. Lets just go."

She had nothing to say in reply. Serin had felt that what she had said was inspiring. As long as he didn't lose hope

Serin was ready to leave. She had no belongings of importance in the room. There were some outfits she had placed in the dresser but they were not worth even the seconds it would take to recover them. Everything she truly considered significant was already in her storage ring on her right index finger.

"Then lets us be off." Serin said as dispersed the illusion around them and recast the skill once more. Serin linked her arm with her sons as the dark fog surrounded them once more. This time though she had added an invisibility effect and as the fog cleared they were no longer visible. Not even to each other. A greater effect like invisibility would drain her mana quickly, but she should have enough to last for her purposes. It was much more vital that there were less witnesses to see anything. No matter what sort of illusion she used to disguise them she feared it wouldn't be effective against their pursuers. In this case it was better to just be entirely unseen.

"Hurry," Serin said as she pulled Quillis along.

At this time of night the inn lobby was empty aside from the sleepy attendant manning the from station. As they began walking across the lobby Serin slowed their pace to walk quieter. The attendant neither heard them nor saw them anything a miss as made their way pass. Inevitably, what did stir their notice was the entrance door opening on its own as Serin left the building.

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it.

Serin looked back as they started to hurry again on the street. She could see the attendant examining the mechanisms of the door to see what had happened. Otherwise, they seemed to be unware of what had transpired.

"Where are we going?" Quillis asked.

"To the guild we'll teleport first. Even if whoever is after the child gets the guild to cooperate in releasing the information of our path it will take a while. Hopefully it will grant us a few days a head of the pursuers. It should give us time to find my friend who can inspect your daughter. He's the only person I would trust to keep secret about whatever the girl's status displays."

They didn't speak after that, which was good for Serin as her focus was needed more and more and she maintained the invisibility. She began to sweat as her mana was quickly consumed. Her feet ached from making this same walk twice in an evening.

When they finally reached the adventurers guild Serin was a mess. Though she did not release her skill yet. It was poor manners to use skills in the guild, but Serin didn't care much about courtesy at the moment. Some of the more sensitive adventurers in main hall looked in their direction with curiosity as they went by.

She struggled as she pulled her son and his baby further into the guild. Finally they came to stairway that went downwards. Only once they were a ways down did she release her illusion.

It had been a while since she had nearly bottom out her mana pool. She was left gasping in the stairway holding onto to her son's arm for support now. It was a weird sensation for her to be relying on him. They waited several minutes as she recovered.

"Okay, I can go on now." She announced.

It was a short ways down when the stairway opened up to fair sized room. A woman busied herself with a book at a desk near a circular stone formation. The woman looked up as they entered.

"Serin!" She said as rushed up towards the group. "Are you okay?" She asked.

"I'm fine, Dielthal. Just tired, but more importantly I need a favor."

"To be owed a favor from you? Anything, dear." Dielthal examined them. Curiosity filled her eyes but she asked no questions.

Serin grinned at that. "We need to portal to Tzekal, but the longer that no one knows where we went the better."

"Easy," Dielthal stated with confidence. "Though I feel obligated to mention that you're much to old to be galivanting off into the desert with a younger man and a baby."

Serin playfully slapped the woman's arm. But there was a lot of truth to it. She could feel it just from this short burst of exertion.

"I'll still need a crystal from you for that distance though. I wouldn't be able to send you that far on my own."

"Of course," Serin replied, as she pulled a mana crystal from her storage ring. It was one she had saved from years ago. Extracted from a level 67 boss if she remembered correctly. It was well over what they would need. A bit of a bribe to further keep the portal master's mouth shut.

Dielthal was not openly greedy, but Serin knew her better from over the years of working with her. With a fast hand the woman took the crystal.

"This will do nicely, Serin. Now stand on the platform."

Serin walked into the stone circular formation with her son's assistance.

"Okay and here we go," Dielthal said as she worked her skill on the side of the formation to begin creating a spatial bridge between here and the desired location. The sound of something foreign shattering echoed in the room as a crack in the air appeared. It slowly expanded unevenly until a portal large enough for them to walk through was created. Beyond the portal entrance was a pitch black void.

Serin pulled her son forward into the void. Behind her she briefly heard Dielthal cry out, "Safe travels, love!" Then the trio were gone from Gilcrest whisked into the void towards Tzekal.
