The Metro
1 | Descent into Darkness

1 | Descent into Darkness

November 20th, 2025. A team of construction workers discovered a tunnel west of Michigan when building a missile complex designed to defend Illinois and the mentioned state from foreign and attacks and possibly built as a military base. Several hundreds of feet of dirt was dug in order to set up the foundations until it some workers accidentally broke through the ceiling of the tunnel. Out of curiousity, few of them even descend into the tunnels to explore for a bit. First few eye witnesses claimed that it looks abandoned with the tracks being rusted not beyond use but anyone having a few glance at it would doubt it would withstand the pressure of the trains. With the walls of the metro being pretty much covered with dried up and wilted vegetation. It wouldn't even matter as the tunnel was dark, like really dark. Only few lights can be seen in the metro tunnels and those were only scarlet emergency lights designed for maintenance workers. The only source of light from the entrance to the metro from the surface was the light illuminating from the surface. After a few hours, the "team" of construction workers was no where to be found within a few hundred feet of the tunnels, front and back. This prompted a search team conducted by a local police force consisting of K9's that would help look for the lost souls. Missing again, this time with news reporters that manage to record down into the entrance but was not permitted from going down the cenote as it was too dangerous. With this, even the military got involved. One thing lead to another and this whole fiasco became a domino effect that would ultimately involve the military and the armed forces. The whole area around 150 feet in radius was secured and the same construction workers excluding the ones that ventured earlier started erecting fences that would prohibit anyone from venturing down there.

After few weeks of preparation, a Lieutenant Colonel organized a battalion of 300 soldiers armed with the latest gear that would help them see in the dark and search for the missing people that went down into the tunnels. Before this, a team of special forces possibly navy seals were tasked with bringing back the lost was also ironically lost. This did not help when a few people that were curious trespassed onto the area to explore. This increased those who got lost to the high tens of people, possibly even into the hundred or more. From this point on, the structure was known as The Pit and it was constructed to look like a huge missile silo capable of fitting 5 of them side by side made of concrete and steel. What divided it from the surface was a reinforced hatch that would be enough to cover an explosion but not air tight. Only way of getting down there was a ladder from the side and a construction crane that carries a container that can fit roughly a squad of soldiers at a time. After going down a ladder that reaches onto the tracks, one soldier even remarked that there was blood on the floor of the tunnels and echoes of screaming and inhuman howling can be heard from far away. Eventually a platoon advanced north of the tunnels. Not long after they were missing despite being away for only few hundreds of feet. Their lights from the equipment devoured by the darkness. Even their radios stopped picking up their signal. A soldier even ran after them to see if they are still there, the same soldier didn't even returned. After a while the operation was a disaster, none of them returned with the missing men and now the amount of people missing in the tunnels surpassed 250 people. It makes sense that the colonel would pull out to save them from having an empty coffin for their funeral. For some reason, the military kept sending in people to investigate, even sending in a few researchers to conduct research in the tunnel.

With their knowledge and reports from those who were in the entrance to the tunnels. They would draw a line that would mark between safety and death. This helped them pursue their research, until it was cancelled when the government decided to convert this place into a execution site to dispose those who were in death row. Before this, the last operation was taken place by a team of soldiers equiped with food, water and supplies. This is normal, but this time they were given a railcar modified by military engineers to be fast and armored that would help them venture the darkness. It was also surrounded with lighting to help them to be spotted easily by survivors. This time, the operation was taken to see if they would return if they have a vehicle. The highest ranked member of the squad is known as Lieutenant Gage with his other comrades that will be mentioned later. This is his story.

On the surface near the hatch of The Pit, the team picks up any attachments they need for their weaponry and their guns.

Lt. Gage: Alright then, everyone ready?

Sgt. Campbell: Yes, Lieutenant

Few other non-commissioned officers and regular enlists replied positively.

Lt. Gage: Here we go......

After all of them entered the container, they felt uneasy as the container was dangling from the crane.

Lt. Gage: Okay, so. Our railcar will be near the ladder, sergeant I need you to be the one to drive the thing. Meanwhile I will be on the top with the M2 Browning to see if anything is in our path, you just need to be the one going forward at my request. Harris, you need to make use of the radar, it will help us locate for any heartbeat within a hundred meter radius.

Pvt. Harris: On it.

As soon as the container landed on the tracks, they come outside to see the crane carrying back the container and wonder if they will be returning back home before the hatch closes. Only two men was stationed near the entrance. It was only reinforced by some sandbags, floodlights, machine guns and supplies. Only one of them watches the north and another the south. Each one would report anything if they see anything. The team then enters the railcar which was a modified APC capable to work on the roads but better suited on a train track. A few of the members in the team started a conversation between each other to kill time until the door closes and they would start their journey once Gage was on the turret spot. The railcar then goes forward at a manageable speed, Campbell stares at the floodlights until they reach around a curve of the tunnel where it started to be really dark. After that, he then pays attention to the radar meanwhile looking outside of the railcar.

Gage: Okay, it seems like the tunnel is getting darker for some reason considering our lighting was consistant earlier.

While holding the M2 Browning with his nightvision goggles on. Campbell then replies.

Campbell: Nothing on the radar just yet, we been venturing about 15 minutes. We're not that far into the tunnels aren't we?

Neil (private first class being a radioman for the team): Okay I still got contact with.... wait....

The signal quickily turns into static.

Campbell: What happened?

Neil: I lost contact with command.

Harris: Wait what?

Out of panic, Harris quickily reverses to return to the entrance to see if the signal comes back. This time in full speed too.

Gage: Hold on private, keep reversing. Ill see if I can spot the entrance or not.

After few minutes the whole team started being confused. Gage got more confused when.

Gage: Okay this is the same corner but I don't see the floodlights.

As soon as the railcar goes back around the curve of the tunnel, nothing.

Gage: WHAT THE FUCK!? WHERES THE ENTRANCE? WHERES THE OUTPOST?

Harris: FUCK, WE LOST CONTACT WITH COMMAND.

The whole team was sent into panic, they have nothing left to do.

Gage: OKAY THEN, I got an idea. We should keep on advancing, the entrance probably located in front of us.

He then grips the handle on the machine gun more tightly seeing if anything hostile might appear in front of the railcar. After a while they then stop to refuel the railcar, one soldier even taking a dangerous step outside to do it. Meanwhile the team was inside having a conversation to lighten the stress.

Harris: So... what the hell is going on here? I thought we weren't too far away from the entrance earlier. I don't even see it from the window in front of us either.

Gage: I don't get it, we were just there.

Neil: So theres a chance we can get back?

Gage: I don't think so, not even a chance in hell.

Campbell: Anyways, lets prepare our rations. Then we-

Gage: WHAT THE FUCK!?

A wolf or mutated bipedal creature about 5 feet tall attacks and starts mauling on the soldier outside refueling the railcar.

Gage: I can't lower my machine gun, CAMPBELL GET IT!

Campbell: ON IT

Campbell then grabs an AA-12 shotgun and then starts shooting at the creature, after that he then inspects the refueler's injuries

Campbell: Corporal are you doing?

David: Im fine, but not any longer. My arm, its....

David's arm was broken but not wounded to the point it was bleeding too much. He was then carried by his comrades into the APC and was being patched up.

Gage: We have to wait for a while for him to get back on his feet. So... what the hell was that?

Campbell: I don't even know, it looks like a mole or something.

Gage: Yeah, no. I never seen anything like it, not even a dog. It was walking upright too, though not all the way. Okay, we need to keep going.

Harris reluctantly drives forward with the railcar. Until......
