Chapter 3: World Information, Magic Affinity and a Surprise
While I'm walking down the street with Elena to the adventure guild and looking excited and stuff like that, I guess I will tell you about how this world works, or at least, the things that Elena taught me just to pass the time.
Let's see... First, I lived in a small town named Venzor located near the west border of a kingdom named Alaelyra and Alaelyra is located on one big super continent. The town has a population of 360 people. With over half of the population being farmers, the rest are either hunters or town guards. Only a small number of people are adventurers.
Second, the Alaelyra kingdom used the currency of copper coins, silver coins and gold coins. There used to be iron coins as well, but they removed it 'cause they think iron is better as a sword than as a coin. The basic value of 1 gold coin is equal to 100 silver coins and 1 silver coin equal to 100 copper coins.
Elena's and Emil's inn made 50 silver coins a week so we have a pretty good life considering that a normal family only made a regular 10 to 20 silver coins per week.
Third, there are five different races in this world which includes the elves, the beastmen, the humans, the dwarves and the demons. Each of them has their own unique characteristics like the elves and demons are better at magic than humans, beastmen, and dwarves, while the dwarves are better at crafting stuff than all of the other race and so on.
There is a basic fantasy setting in this world that the demons are at war with every single race on this continent, the elves keep themselves to their forest while behaving like a group of tree huggers, the dwarves with a bad case of alcoholics and live under the mountain so it is easier with mining or crafting and humans are all over the place. Sometimes, the humans even summon heroes from other worlds to fight the demons instead of using their own army.
There's more but we already arrived at the Adventurer's Guild, a big building made of wood, three stories tall with a sign that has a sword and a shield crossing over each other, that kind of adventure guild.
At this point Elena starts to hold my left hand, while I’m starting to put on my excited face. Yup, I totally look like a child, definitely not a 48-year-old adult inside a kid's body.
[ Because no one will think otherwise ]
Alice. This again? I’m warning you. Stop it, ok?
[ Fine ]
What, really?
[ No ]
*sigh*
Figures. Hey, we arrived at the counter.
“Hi Elena! Are you here to put up a quest?”
A receptionist girl with pointy ears and a charming smile said to us from behind the counter.
“Hi Talia, I’m here to check on Lena's magic affinity.”
Elena replies with a smile that's no less than Talia the elf herself, and I think there is some lightning flying
around their eyes. Why is there lightning in the room?
“So how much is it for a single check?”
Elena asks after a moment of silence but still keeps her scary smile.
“Not much. Only 20 copper coins.”
said Talia, still maintaining that charming smile of her but it starts to look dangerous. Since when does a charming smile turn into something so scary?
Seeing it is really not that much, Elena takes out 20 copper coins from the pocket of her dress and puts it on the counter. After taking the coins, Talia then guides us to a small room in the back that has a few old bookshelves and a table with a crystal ball on it, covered in dust.
She then takes out a handkerchief and starts cleaning the crystal ball. I’m not gonna say any thing about that.
“Now Lena. Please, gently place your hand on this globe and let’s see which affinity you are better with.” said Talia after creating a cloud of dusk from the thing. So much dust!
I wonder which affinity I will have. Hopefully, it’s something good.
“Ok.”
With a short reply, I place my little hand on the globe.
The moment my hand touches it, it starts to light up the color of yellow, then white, after that it then starts to turn black. After a few seconds, the light went off, and all I had to do is stand here and touch it.
“Odd, you have three affinity. But two of them are opposite of each other. That is very rare.” said Talia looking surprised.
Meanwhile, Elena already has a big but happy smile on her face.
“Congratulations, your daughter has three magic affinities which are wind, light and dark.” said Talia after a few seconds.
Then Elena starts hugging me really tight, no choking is the right way to describe it. Someone help me, please call the police! No, police is trouble, someone save me!
“Do you know what this means Lena? It means I can teach you all my best magic.”
She said excitedly while squeezing every last bit of air out of my lungs. That woman has some powerful hug! I think one of my ribs just broke. Truly fit for a former B rank adventure.
“ Mom, I… can’t breath.”
Hearing my last words on this world she immediately let go of me. After a few seconds of gasping for air, I realise something important. Even though I’m 4 times stronger than any normal adult, they can still slowly choke me to death. I guess I’m better find a way to counter that in the future.
“So does this mean you will teach me all of your magic?”
I say pretending the whole thing never happen.
“Yes! Didn’t I just tell you that I will teach you all of my best magic? My, what a silly girl. You really need to pay more attention to the things other people said. ”
Elena said with a mischievous look on her face. No, I was being choked to death on my second life so of course I can’t hear you.
“You did?”
“To be fair, you were choking her with that monstrous hug of yours.”
Talia said while patting my back to help me breath. Thanks Talia. I owe you big time.
“Nonsense! Emil never complains about my hug. You are just making stuff up.”
Said Elena trying to defend her self. Emil, the guy looks like a bear. His strength is the same as one as well. Of course he doesn’t mind. Don’t compare my five year old body with that guy.
“Emil looks like a bear with the same strength as one as well. Of course he doesn’t mind. Don’t compare your five-years-old daughter with her father.”
Said Talia as if she is reading my mind. Thank you. But how strong is Emil anyway? Elena says he can chop an entire tree with a single swing of his sword but how strong is that?
[ User, Lena! ]
Ah, Alice I was wondering why were you so quiet a few minutes ago.
[ Bad news ]
Bad news? How bad? And why is it bad ?
[ A new mercenary has been reincarnated into this world ]
What!?! So I wasn’t the only one using the system.
[ No, of course not. The system is created to help the god interact with the mortal world through the user ]
So what? All I understand is that I just got an extra helper.
[ No, even though the side quests are many, most worlds only have a few main mission so the mercenaries usually try to eliminate each other so that they can get more points and better rewards ]
[ And the one who just reincarnated is known for killing other system users ]
So he or she is bad, right?
[ Really bad ]
Then I just need to step up my game. Guess I have been going easy for sometime, with a naïve thought that I’m the only one being using this system thing.
*sigh*
