After a while, Lunavay calmed down and stared at the night sky. The stars shined with a grace that none can ever achieve, but as she was looking up, a tower caught her attention. The tower of the Seer overlooked the sky, and she wondered what type of view she could see if she watched from up there. Noticing that the entrance was just a couple steps away, her curiosity got the best of her.
"Lady Luna! We must hurry back!" Annie reminded her.
"But how can I? The tower is just right there!"
"But his highness will be displeased!"
"Listen, here is an enchanted ring my father gave me," Lunavay passed a black ring over to Annie. "If it starts to glow, it means that I am in danger, and if I am, you know who to call."
"But Lady Luna! If anything happens to you-"
"Don't worry about me. You know that my mother taught me self-defense. I'll be fine!"
Annie sighed in disbelief, "I should've known better. Once you make up your mind, there's no going back. Anyways, if anything should happen, I will contact him."
"Thank you, Ann."
Lunavay watched as Annie walked away, thinking that she'll head to the inn that everyone of her servants agreed on. Therefore, she began her adventure up to the top of the tower. Once she opened the entrance, the stair design was typical for a tower spiraling around the base of the structure. Surprisingly, the lighting is really well done because she could see everything, including the molds and cracks in the walls. Once she reached the top, disappointment made its way to her face. Nothing of interest such as old paintings or ancients swords covered the stairs. However, the tower is well kept. Luna pushed door open and walked over to the open window hoping to see how pretty the night sky would look like in such a tall tower. She gasped in amazement.
"Quite the view it seems," someone commented from behind her.
She jumped in surprise and swiftly turned around to face the source of the voice. He sat next to the door as if he wanted to hide himself since the door hides him once opened. It seems to be an old man with his hair and beard covering almost half of his face. He smelt a bit musty probably due to his age. The old man had a cloak over him, with a hood hiding his face other than his beard, and a bit short as well.
Finally noticing how dirty the chamber was, she cringed in agony. The poorly kept room had books stacked up all over the room and dust covered the highest stacked one. Although she noticed how well kept the bed and table are because not a single speck of dust ever touched those. As she absorbed the surrounding, old man sat down onto the rocking chair next to the table with his cane leaning on his chest.
"What brings a young lady like you to this place?" he asked.
"Sorry if I disturbed you," she bowed. "I am Lunvay von Wolfram, daughter of duke Volfram."
The old man leaned back on his rocking chair, "I see..."
The presence of the old man disturbed her for some reason, somewhat intimidating in a way. Although he didn't seem like a threat, Lunvay feared him and wondered what he was capable of. Of course, he just an old man, but her father always told her to be wary of everyone she met.
"Umm... are you possibly the Seer?" she asked with her softest voice.
"Seer?" he scratched his beard, "Is that what they call me?"
"They say that you are the oldest living person in Grandaius."
The old man moved over to the window by supporting himself with his cane and peered into the night sky. "I don't know if that's true, but I believe that I may be the oldest person alive."
"From the way you conduct yourself, you don't seem to be that old. I mean, you happen to sneak up on me even though you're aged."
This story originates from a different website. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.
"Sleep does wonders to a person," he scratched his beard again, "you may not even know that I was alive."
Lunavay smiled, feeling that there was no need to put her guard up anymore, "May a make a request?"
He moved back to his rocking chair and sat down, "As long as it does not require physical movements for these old bones of mine."
"There are stories about how the Seer met the last wraith who said to end the Great War five hundred years ago. I wish for you to tell that story."
Lunavay always wanted to learn about the stories of the Last Wraith, and this is her one chance. Thinking about the chances of meeting this person again after the marriage to the dirt bag downstairs seems low.
He groaned, "What you are asking is of me is to tell you something that even I don't know fully?"
"I'll make it worth it to you," she pleaded with both hands, "I'll even pay you."
He chuckled, "What would one such as I have a need for money?"
"Then how about a replacement, I'll-"
He raised his hand, silencing her, "No matter, it's just a legend that I made up to become someone of recognition. Only to end up here in this isolated tower as well as being called a Seer for no apparent reason."
"So all those stories of you meeting the Last Wraith was..."
"A lie," he finished for her.
A lie? Her dedication to figuring out the existence of the Last Wraith was a futile attempt to begin with? That's impossible, no way that could be true. The war from five hundred years ago really existed due to constant records of the war. But to deny the existence of the Last Wraith who stopped the war and saved countless lives is the same as denying the war to begin with!
"But... that's impossible, there are ruins from the war five hundred years ago, like Fort Namira!"
"The war is real, but the Wraith is a lie, a myth, or even a legend."
"Impossible!" Lunvay roared in anger, "Thinking about it logically, there is no way for the war to end with too few of a lost is impossible! Political warfare is about those left standing, but to have such few losses for all the Kingdoms are unbelievable! The Last Wraith is the only logical explanation! Taking into account of how the Five Great Scars came to be must've been done by the Wraith!"
"Perhaps all of kingdoms came up with the Last Wraith to end the war?"
Lunavay glared, "Do you really think that? That a myth has the power to end a war just like that?"
He scratched his beard, "Perhaps you are over thinking?"
Lunavay scowled, "I've dedicated my whole life to studying the Last Wraith, and I will not allow you to just casually toss it aside!"
Indeed, Lunavay did dedicate her life to studying the Last Wraith's deeds to end the war. Ever since she could remember, her mother would always tell her bed time stories about how the wraith would protect her in her sleep. It would move like a shadow, act like a shadow, and disappear like a shadow. Her fascination grew to become her reason to live. She lived to study such an entity that ended the war of the five kingdoms to create such a long era of peace for five hundred years. Denying such an existence is as if one would deny her life.
"It seems like you are simply obsessed with such a figure," the old man smirked.
"Yeah, I am!" she proudly admitted, "I will not deny its existence!"
He smiled, "Interesting..."
"Making fun of my obsession now?"
"What was your name again young lady?"
"Lunavay von Volfram!"
"Truly interesting," he chuckled, "Let me tell you the story of the Last Wraith."
Shocked, she frowned, "But you said that it was a lie."
"And it will always be a lie," he smirked. "After all, history is written by the victor."
Her eyes widened in realization, "What is true? What is false? Only the victor may claim the facts."
He sighed, "I met the last wraith at a crossroad and he cursed me with eternal life, so I could live to tell his tale. I was tortured for countless days just so the wraith could drill his story into me, but he also left me with a warning, 'I will bring Grandaius down onto its knees'."
"The savior becomes the destroyer? Why?" Lunavay asked.
"Whoever this victor is, he or she must have betrayed it in some moment of its life."
"So the Last Wraith turned evil, but why? You must know more than this?"
The old man scratched his beard, "Gray Raultivon..."
Lunavay raised her brows, "I thought only a handful of people know of this name? Back then, the Raultivon Kingdom at that time had been truly prosperous and people loved the Kingdom. However, Gray was a truly evil man who sought the destruction of the Raultivon Kingdom. Those that know him or only know of his name truly detest him. Even I struggle to like his character. He made a deal with the Old Gods and caused a great calamity to befall on Grandaius thus beginning the Great War! It would be better for him to simply disappear from our history."
He smiled weakly, "Is this the way a scholar of the past is supposed to be? A scholar that deems those truly evil should perish along with stories of the past? Simply to become legends? Myths? Fairytales? If that is the case, you should give up on this monumental task."
"Then why do historians attempt to erase his wretched name from history? Last time I checked, villains don't deserve to-" she stopped herself short as she remembered his words.
"So, you realize then. Everything that happened five centuries ago was orchestrated to stop the end of the world. And the events that revolved around the end of the world always comes back to one man, Gray Raultivon. He was the key behind everything that occurred..."
