Chapter 2: The Ball

Chapter 2: The Ball

Reading the letter from his horrible majesty, Lunavay wanted to drop dead from its cheesiness. She took a deep breath and forced herself to continue reading the letter from Prince Dorian.

My Dearest Lunavay,

Today is good day for someone as beautiful as you are. I, the greatest highness of all shall hope that you agree to my terms that you of all people are allowed one servant inside the palace. As such, you are allowed in my palace to take part in my wonderful party! I hold you to my upmost standards, and this party I shall host will live up yours! As such, I formally welcome you to my humble abode!

"Oh goodness..." Lunavay groaned, "What a narcissist bastard! And what kind of term is this!?"

A knocked sounded on the door, and Lunavay rubbed her headache as she went to open the door. Realizing that the person outside was Annie, she welcomed her in. Sighing, Lunavay went to take a seat over at bed while Annie went to sit at a chair overlooking the garden. The silence between the two of them made Lunavay feel uncomfortable, as she was the one who invited Annie inside.

"I..." Annie mumbled.

"What?"

"I want to go with you," she mumbled.

"No," Lunvay firmly denied. "You're staying whether you like it or not."

"Luna, please..."

Lunavay sighed, "Ann, I don't think you're ready."

"Luna," she pleaded.

"You may be my friend for as long as I can remember, but this decision is final."

"Your mother and father told me to come with you whether you like it or not. Even if you disagree, I'm coming with you."

Lunavay shook her head in disbelief, "Why would they do that? They should know that you are still recovering! I'll have a chat with them right this instance!" She got up from the bed and marched towards her door.

"I am servant in their eyes, but... I am also the one they trust the most."

Surprised, Lunavay moved over to Annie. "Is it because of my father?"

"No, it's because of my Faie. It will only follow the orders of that which it has contracted with."

Lunavay smiled bitterly, "Either way, you're too stubborn to listen to me as well. Well, at least we have a guardian watching over the two of us. Come, let pack up and leave for the party."

Annie smiled and complied with her request as she grabbed a bag moving out of the room. Noticing the darkening sky, Lunavay walked over her window as she breathed in. The clouds slowly covered the sun as the wind slammed into her window, rattling it. Light blasted across the sky as thunder echoed through the land.

She smiled bitterly, "Bad weather for a party..."

Holding an umbrella over her head as the raindrops beat over her, she looked up into the tower of Seer located in the middle of the Palace of the Raultivon Kingdom. She shivered in excitement and curiosity, and wondered what she will have to do to get up to the tower.  Possibly climb up there, but that's plan Z if she had no other choice. Sighing she continued her way towards the Palace in hopes that the people there will keep her entertained.

"Milady!" Someone called from behind her, "Please don't walk ahead of me! I don't want to get into trouble with the Lord."

"Then hurry Annie," She urged, "I wish to enter as soon as possible!"

"But your clothes?"

"Oh give them to the servants, they'll bring it up later!"

"But your jewelry? What if someone steals it?"

"Let them," She smiled, "I have no use for such items. Books are ten times more valuable that those. You know what, just take them and distribute them among those that came along with me."

"But the Lord will-"

"Ann," she interrupted, "I shall talk to my father concerning this matter whenever it comes up. Now hurry up!"

"Thank you Milady, I shall not forget this."

"Ann, did I not tell you to address me as Luna?"

"But Milady- I mean Lady Lunavay. I thought you mentioned that I should only do so in private times."

"Well, you aren't wrong. Anyways, the Raultivon escorts will help with those packages, so hurry up Ann. You wanted to be my personal escort did you not?"

"Yes Lady Lunavay!" Annie smiled and followed along.

The two of them made their way into the entrance of the palace around the bridge as water rushed underneath their soles. Often times, Luna could feel water seep into her dress shoes as her foot constantly glued itself to the interior. Irritated, wet, and cold, she rushed ahead of Stephan to take shelter from the rain. The lower helms of her shirt were drenched, so she took the edges and twisted it to squeeze out as much water as she could.

"Lady Luna! That's very unladylike!" Ann called as she hurried towards her.

"It's fine," Lunavay protested. "Besides, this'll ward off any or all suitors here."

Annie sighed, "I guess, but keep in mind why you are here."

"Yes I understand, I am here because his highness wishes to marry me."

As the two of them entered the palace, they noticed a guard with a scruffy and poorly kept beard, approach them. His glare made Lunavay shiver in fear as they continued walking forward. Annie and Lunvay nodded at each other as if they were in the same mindset, and fastened their pace. Suddenly, Lunavay jumped in shock as soon as the guards hand gripped her shoulder however, Annie and Lunavay had expected this outcome.

Lunavay calmly turned around, "May I help you?"

"No servants are allowed beyond this point," the guard said.

"I was never informed of this."

"Do as you're told! His highness would not be pleased if he were to see such a peasant in his eyes."

Lunavay glared, "S'cuse me, but I had an agreement with his highness that I would be able to bring in a personal escort! And her name is Annie, not peasant! You will do well to speak her name favorably before I tell your highness about your deeds!"

"Indeed, you shall get a personal escort, and that escort is me!" He scowled as if he ignored everything else said.

"I would prefer my own escort, thank you very much," Lunavay angrily retorted. "Come Ann, let's ignore this fool!"

"You bitch!"

Lunavay took a step back in shock as soon as she saw the guard charging at them. However, she did not expect Annie to use herself as a shield for her safety. Blood rushed through her head as she tried to think of a way to resolve this, but nothing came to mind. Instinctively, she slammed her eyelids shut and screamed her lungs out. Interestingly, she noticed that she was still standing on two feet when she opened her eyes. Rather, both Annie and herself were safe from harm due to some unforeseen circumstance. A young noble had pinned down the guard before he could do some damage.

He's quite handsome with his short-cropped brown hair, and his blue eyes made him stand out from the rest of the nobles. His dark leather overcoat embroidered with jewels along the sleeves gave the impression him being highborn, and the white fine silk shirt he wore consisted of high quality fabrics too. Annie and Lunavay blushed in excitement, but quickly returned to their former selves.

"What the hell is going on here?" someone roared from across the hall.

"Your highness, please put on some clothes first!" A servant called as he followed along.

The young noble noticed the disturbance and pushed himself upwards to greet the man. Whoever the man is, he seems to be someone who came from a well-known family according to his arrogance and clothing. Coming out into the public with just a towel over his waist says something about his character. Being drenched in water right after a hot bath must have meant that he's the prince since he's too young to be the king. In other words, Lunavay understood that this arrogant man is her future husband. She frowned.

"Your majesty," the guard said, "these people will tarnish your name if not stopped. I ask of you to send them away."

"Silence!" the young prince gazed at Lunavay and the edges of his lips curved into a perverted smiled. "Do you know who you messed with? She is the daughter of Duke Volfram, Lunavay von Volfram! You've also shamed me for showing such discourtesy to my soon to be wife!"

"But your highness! You ordered that no servants are to enter for they'll shame you!"

The prince shifted his gaze to Annie, and smiled deeply, "I did however, pretty women are different. Guards! Take this man away and publicly execute him as an example of defying me!"

"My apologies your highness! I've done you wrong! Please don't kill me!" the guard begged as the others dragged him away for his public execution.

After a while, the young noble bowed deeply at the Raultivon prince as if he was apologizing for his actions. The prince scoffed and instead, shifted his perverted gaze to the two young women before him. Lunavay looked away, but didn't dare show her disgust in front of the man to be her husband. The young noble straightened up and smiled at them.

"Your highness, Dorian, I am Roche of the house of Vernian. I am pleased to make your acquaintance."

"I don't care who you are!" the Raultivon prince hissed.

"But I wish to know my military partner if we are to work together in the future."

The prince laughed in a mocking manner, "I don't need a partner, brute force will win any war!"

Lunavay smiled, "But five hundred years ago, the Raultivon Kingdom lost the battle for Fort Namira because they didn't expect the Kingdom of Gregare to shoot long range ballista."

The prince laughed loudly, "If The Last Wraith who was said to end all wars was just a legend, then the battle at Fort Namira is just a myth then! Ha, legends and myths mean nothing to me!" Dorian gently caressed Lunavay's face and smiled perversely again. "But the face of a beauty means much to me."

Lunavay forced a smiled, "I hope to see you in your best dress later, prince."

"Prince? You should just call me your husband from now on!" he said as he walked away.

Lunavay shivered in disgust once she confirmed that Dorian had gone far enough. "Eww, disgusting prince. Ugh, I need to take a bath after that disgusting hand violated my face!"

"Milady!" Annie whispered.

Roche laughed loudly, "No doubt about that Milady. Now then, shall we attend the ball then? Come, I'll lead you there with your servant."

He held out his hand to Lunavay and she took it without the slightest hint of hesitation. Rather, she wanted to him to lead the way for her. Unlike a certain someone, at least Roche knew how to be a gentleman. She could hear the sound of the music from the entrance to the ballroom. Dancing and reading are some of the things she enjoys, but for the first time, she felt something else. Dorian's hand felt warm and comforting, and right when they entered ballroom, she could feel the rate of her heartbeat getting faster. Perhaps this is the feeling of love, or is it something else?

His gentle aqua colored eyes gazed into hers and suddenly her surroundings suddenly turned silent. All she could hear was the sound of his breathes. It was almost as if she had unconsciously canceled out all other noises just to focus on Roche's voice. Blood pumped to her face as his dazzling eyes met hers. She could feel the burning sensation her face and wonders if she'll die of embarrassment, or shame. Either way, this was the first time she ever felt something like this.

Roche smiled, "Shall we dance?"

"Why of course!"

"But Lady Lunavay?" Annie stepped in between the two of them, "You're engaged to the prince!"

Lunavay sadly smiled as she remembered her purpose, "I am sorry Lord Roche, but Ann is right. I cannot have any illicit relationships for it will ruin my father and the prince's reputation. Therefore, I cannot have this dance with you."

He frowned, "I'll take full responsibility if the prince sees us together."

Lunavay glanced at Annie, "Ann, can I?"

Annie sighed, "Fine, I'll be on the lookout. However-"

Lunavay jumped in joy and dragged Lord Dorian with her towards the middle of the ballroom. Her cheek burned red as she stared deep into his eyes as he took the lead. She followed his enchanting movements and danced to his rhythm. The young noble felt her legs moved by their own will, but she didn't fight back. Rather, Lunvay entrusted her will to her body and danced to the music played by the royal musicians.

After the musicians finished their piece, Lunavay breathed rapidly at his face, hoping that he could not see her excitement. However, she finally noticed how close their faces were to each other when she felt his warm breath touch her lips.  Embarrassed, she pulled back immediately as she felt heat rushing to her face.

"You're really good at this," Lunvay looked away embarrassingly.

"I could still use some practice since you had to lead the other half of the dance."

"But it's fine this way isn't it? After all, we had to memorize our parts of this dance."

"So you're saying that I shouldn't need to memorize the women's part then?" he suggested as the two of them moved towards a table on the side. He grabbed two cups of red wine from the servant that passed them and offered to other one to Lunavay. She smiled with elation as she sat down next to Roche.

"Although it would be nice to memorize the women's part," Lunavay continued. "It makes you more of a gentleman that way."

Roche laughed, "If a woman of your standings says that, then maybe I should memorize the women's part as well!" Roche glanced around quickly then turned back to Lunavay, "Anyways, there is something I wish to speak to you in private, Lady Lunavay."

"Please, just Luna will do," Lunavay raised an eyebrow as if their friendly chat session had become serious. "Anyways, can't we do it here?" Lunavay noticed that Roche glanced around quickly again before looking at her.

"Meet at the balcony," he whispered as he moved towards the balcony over watching the royal garden.

"Milady Lunavay, I must tell you to change your attire as you are still drenched in water," Annie requested.

Lunavay jumped in surprise and wondered when Annie got to the table to begin with. Perhaps her idle chat with Lord Vernian distracted her too much from her surroundings. Realization finally dawned on her, perhaps the reason why Lord Vernian requested to speak to her privately was due to her attire. After all, most of the nobles avoided her eyes when their gaze met hers, and some even went as far as snickering and giggling to each other. She hung her head low in shame.

"Is this how unrefined his majesty's fiancée is?" A woman walked over to Lunavay, "Such a shame that his highness has to marry someone such as you."

"Good afternoon to you, Lady Floris," Annie bowed deeply.

"What is a servant doing here in the ball room?" Lady Floris exclaimed, "Guards escort this servant out of here!"

"She's my servant," Lunavay growled as she stood up, but the word servant pained her. After all, Annie is a precious family member and a friend.

Floris scowled, "Even the prince's fiancée cannot do something as simple as following a simple rule."

"You-"

"His highness has arrived!" A guard announcement echoed through the ballroom. Interestingly, Dorian wore a purple robe with jewelry embedded across the arms. A baby wolf's hide had been sown directly around the collar, and he embroidered his neck with countless jewelries. The rings on each finger had a house crest embedded on them. The magical glean on each of the rings made it simple to tell which rings belongs to what house.  The ring on his left pinky shined a bright red color symbolizing the house of Volfram. A perverted smiled ran across his face again as he walked towards Lunavay.

The prince smirked, "Lunavay, your personal attention belongs to me."

Lunavay forced a smile again, "Hello your highness. I hope you are doing well."

Floris bowed, "Your royal highness, I don't mean any offense, but may I know why Lady Lunavay was allowed a servant?"

"A servant?" He caressed Annie's face even as she showed discomfort mixed with fear. "Someone as beautiful as this cannot be a servant."

"Enough," Lunavay sighed is defeat, "As soon as I change my clothes, I shall dance with you. Come Annie, I will need your assistance with changing."

"I would prefer to see you change in front of me, love."

"I am a devote follower of the Yoran," she lied, "You will have to wait until we are married."

"Religion means nothing to me," Dorian boasted, "So let's change the marriage date to today!"

"As a devote follower of Yoran, that act weakens my faith."

"Isn't that the idea?"

Lunavay hid her scowl, "I must get dressed now for the after party your highness. Please excuse my rudeness. Come Annie."

Once the door closed behind the two of them, the two of them continued onwards without a clear destination. She noticed the guards ignoring the two of them as they walked around the palace. However, Lunavay didn't care whether they were going towards the changing room or not. All she wanted to do right now was to get away from everyone. Shaming a family's name and honor can never be atoned. Once she figured they were in the clear, she fell to her knees sobbing her eyes out. Annie's hand touched her shoulders, but somehow it didn't make her feel any better. She continued crying.
