Prologue:

The gravel, small as peas, moved beneath their feet and from it a faint dust rose, the perfume of the town. Not much of a perfume though, it was more of a stench, the stench of the sewers, the thick air filled with smoke and dust, every breath filling your lunges with more and more toxic smoke. That was the perfume of this town, a stench.

“Get back here,” the shout ran out across the town, navigating its way through the streets, until it reached the one it was intended for. A figure hidden by the shadows cast by the walls of the allies, there it stood not making a noise, from here it listened, listening to the sound of the town, from here it heard the screaming, the shouting, and the noise of people rampaging through the town as they searched for it. It didn’t worry though, nor did it feel any fear, it knew it was safe, it knew they wouldn’t find it in the shadows, they couldn’t catch it. They never have caught it. It was just an average night on the town. However the figure knew it couldn’t stay for much longer, picking up its bag, it listened, but didn’t hear a sound so out it went, scattering from ally to ally, shadow to shadow, until it smelt it, the smell of the fresh air, untouched by the town. The figure took a deep breath letting the clean air fill its lungs; at this time it flicked back its hood revealing a pair of dark eyes, accompanied by short hair that had turned black from all the coal. The face turned up to glare into the night sky, as the moon broke through the smog of the town, it reviling the rugged face of a young man in his early teens. The boy stood atop a large wall that towered over the buildings in the town, casting down an un-breaking shadow. On the other side was a waste land as far as one could see nothing but sand and death. The boy looked back towards the town; a single tear formed under one of his blue eyes, it crawled its way down the face of the boy, as the tear fell, the boy turned his back on the town. A smile replaced the tear; it carved its way across the young face as he leaped out into the air, with the city at his back.

Chapter 1:

“I got it, I finally got it!” a young man shouted as he jumped into the air.

“Can you be quiet it’s still dark outside,” replied another young man as he raised himself from his bed.

“Look Aron, it’s the real deal,” said the young man excited as he shoved his hand in the other boys face.

“Wait, that’s the key! How di… Jewels where did you get it,” Aron replied in a worried tone as he rubbed his eyes.

“Common don’t you wanna (want to [slang]) see what’s in there,” Jewels replied you could still here the excitement in his voice.

“Can’t we wait till the suns up at least, I still need to sleep.”

“We need to, go now I need to return the key before they wake up or they will notice.”

Jewels started to through clothes at Aron, “get dressed I’ll meet you out side.” Said Jewels with anticipation as he made his way out of the room.

“God he is lucky I’ve known him since we were five otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to deal with him, he has too much energy for his own good,” Aron groaned to himself as he slipped into his clothes. He turned on the light and looked into the mirror, in the mirror you could see a young man 15 or 14 years of age, his hair was like charcoal besides for the few blond streaks that still remained. The boy was you average height, his facial features were hidden under a thin black layer of coal that had gather on his face, the only thing you could notice were the two eye that shone with a clear blue colour, that could be compared to that of a clear ocean. The boy worse clothes that used to be white but were now covered in dirt and only a spec of white remain, it was evident that the clothes had been worn well past their worth.

“Take your time, why are you always so slow,” Jewels stated sarcastically as he turned to accompany Aron who was making his way down the steps. The street light’s lit up the surrounding area. Jewels appearance become clear, he had dark black hair, this wasn’t a result of the charcoal it was his natural colour, his facial features were also hiding by a thin layer of charcoal and dirt, and he had a pair of dark brown eyes. As for his clothes he wore similar clothes to Aron. The only thing that stood out about him was his smile that seemed to be permanently stuck to his face. The two young men silently made their way across town unseen, they snuck their way into a large abandoned building. “We made it,” Aron stated.

“They don’t even hear us anymore,” Jewels replied as he grasped his knees for breath.

“Well we have been sneaking around like this for over 8 years now”

“I guess you’re right, anyway let’s go,” Jewels told Aron as he ran off down the hallway of the building, Aron followed after. The two stopped running when they came across a large door.

“What do you recon is in there.”

“I don’t know just hurry up and open it I want to see,” replied Aron with anticipation as he pointed towards a keyhole in the middle of the door.

Jewels put the key in the lock, with a “click” the door started to pry open, as the two boys pushed, the swung open.

“Look at all this stuff,” Jewels yelled with excitement as he started to jump around.

“we can’t even see anything yet, here take this and go look around call me if you find anything remember we need to return the key as soon as possible in case someone looks for it for some reason,” Aron reminded Jewels as he handed his a gas lamp. The boys started to search around the room, as they used the lamps to illuminate the way. They stuffed anything that looked like it had value into bags that both of them pulled out of their pants pockets.

“Oi, Jewels come over here,” Aron said in a low tone.

“What’s that,” Jewels replied as he stared at the book in Aron’s hands.

“I don’t know you’re the one that can read, what does the title say?”

“The life beyond the walls, it looks like a journal.”

“The suns coming up, let’s just take this stuff and go,” Aron stated as he picked up his two small bags.

The two boys made their way out of the building and scurried back home.

“I’ll go return the key tomorrow night for now let’s go read that book.”

The two boys snuck their way back into their rooms, Jewels started to read the Journal in a whisper but loud enough so that Aron could here.

“That goes against everything I ever learnt here in the orphanage, did you learn anything about that from you parents before you came here,” Aron questioned Jewels.

“Not a thing, it couldn’t be… maybe no one knows, maybe we have discovered something no one here knows about, we will go check it out,” Jewels replied. The boys then spent the next few days planning their escape from the town and the details of the trip. They worked out what they were going to need and how to acquire it all they needed was some time.

“I’m going to go return the key it’s been a few days, we’ve gotten lucky no one has counted the keys yet,” said Jewels as he started to run off

“Wait let me do it you got the key, ill return it,” shouted Aron but there was no one there to hear his words, Jewels had already run off.

Aron waited for Jewels return but it never came, when the sun started to rise he started to get worried. He just got up to go out and look for him, when a loud cry could be heard outside in the town. Probably Jewels pranking some people again he thought a he quickly ran outside, he ran towards the sound of the scream, but when he saw what was in front of him his body stopped, his mind went blank, he just stared blankly at the scene before him. Other people came running over, they all turned away with shock the moment they saw the horrific scene in front of them. It was the remains of a young man, most of his fingers were missing on his left hand, his whole right hand was gone. It was a similar scene with his feet only two toes remained, on each foot. His body was covered in wounds all over there were burn marks on his shoulders, and face. The only thing anyone could identify his by was his dark hard and his brown eyes, even though it was a common appearance for people in the town Aron instantly knew who it was, his knees gave way as he collapsed onto the fall. His thoughts went blank, memories flashed back and forth through his head. “I’m going to get out of here, I know it’s your dream, I’ll do it for the two of us, I’ll find out the true about what’s out there,” Aron spoke his words had no happy emotions left in them, they were accompanied by his tears.

“I smile for you, I’ll follow our plan, I’ll get out, I’ll get out,” he continued to murmur to himself as he pushed himself of the ground and a smile started to form on his face, anyone could tell with one glance there was something wrong about the smile, while it looked normal, it just felt wrong, the tears stopped coming, as Aron turned his packed and would off into the crowd.
