Chapter 3 - The Vampire & Her Minions

Chapter 3 - The Vampire & Her Minions

My vision could just barely make out the light of the sun above, shining down on me. Slowly, I opened my eyes, and with the help of two sets of hands to guide me, I was able to sit up.

My heart rate was so gentle, like I was asleep, and my breathing was almost nonexistent, being very slow and shallow. I felt weak, but I wasn’t dead just yet. My body felt as if I was strong enough to stand, but I was weak enough that I wouldn't last in a fight very long. Not that I could to begin with.

“Are you okay?” Lisa’s face peeked into my line of sight, so close that are noses were almost touching.

Her eye brows were raised, and it looked as if she was about to cry.

“Yeah, man...” Oliver rested his hand on my shoulder, “We thought you were eliminated there...I was more worried that it was because of me...”

I laughed it off and give it a simple nod, “I'm fine...It all worked out.” Each of my breaths were wheezes, and my face was met with the sensation of heavy sweat, sliding down my face and neck.

Lisa sighed, “On the bright side, we tore Olivers sweater apart to wrap your wounds with. The bleeding stopped but, you’ve already lost a lot of blood. You won’t make it much longer like this.”

It wasn’t till now, that I realized Oliver was pretty much shirtless, only wearing a white tank-top.

“It’s good thing I always wear something underneath.”

‘Aren’t you supposed to though?’

I grinded my teeth. Just like I did before, I gathered all the strength I had and stood up, staggering as I got my foot placement just right.

“I’ll be the one to decide how much longer I last.”

My feet set off, bringing me forward. It wasn’t long till I tripped over a bat and dove face first into the ground.

BMP!

Luckily, Lisa and Oliver were fast to lift me back up.

“...Goofball.” Lisa muttered.

“...Take two.” this time, the three of us set off together. But I could see them side-eyeing me, watching out to see if I fall again.

FWSH! WHAM! Crackle!

The doors to the cathedral broke apart with a single swing from Lisa’s sledgehammer. And we stepped inside, ready to fight the first thing that moves. But it seemed to be lacking any kind of life.

“It’s too quiet.” Lisa muttered, “What if it’s a trap? You saw how many there were on the bridge.”

“You don’t have to state the obvious.” Oliver sighed, adjusting his glasses that were somehow undamaged.

Is smart-ass response struck an eye-rolling reaction from her. But we quickly moved on.

I took the first steps forward, since it didn’t seem like either one of them had it in them. Trap or not, we’d have to eventually go in if we wanna survive.

About halfway to the stairs, I froze. My ears picked up on the sound of footsteps, then a voice called out.

“Are you guys back already? I trust you all gave them a brutal end. I mean, c’mon. Humans should know better than to fight those like us.”

A beautiful, feminine face peeked over the railing of the stairs. Big black eyes, defined lips with purple lipstick, and long curly hair.

Her eyes widened even more when she saw me getting ready to make my way up the steps.

“Humans.” she muttered. “No! I will not have this.”

She yelled in anger and stormed off, stomping with every step, “Gargoyles! Deal with these idiots. Before they ruin my day.”

Swoop!

Figure leaped over the edge and grabbed me by my collar, throwing me across the air. I landed hard, hitting back of my head against a wall. My vision went blurry, but I still had my senses. Once on balance, I was able to get a somewhat good look at this Gargoyle.

Fiery red eyes that glowed like a laser, and a skin texture similar to stone. It was easily 7 ft. Tall at best. Just its size seemed to make Oliver stumble back a bit.

But here’s the question. Was this something the three of us could face? Maybe not, but it was about to get even worse.

Over the railing, came two other gargoyles, leaping down and landing besides their friend. Now there were three of them.

One was scary enough, but at least we outnumbered it. Now it’s a three versus three. And our side didn’t feel promising right now.

“Shit...what do we do?” Lisa looked unsteady, like she wasn’t sure whether she should run or begin attacking. Her grip, trembling around the sledgehammer.

“Hate to say this...but seems like we’re ach going to have to fight one.”

We’d get slaughtered in a group fight. This way, at least it’s be less chaotic, leaving more room for focus.

“Fight one of those things alone?” Oliver shouted, “I can’t even put up a fight against a normal person....”

It sucked, but this was our best shot at winning. Even if only one of us makes it through.

“You still have my machete. Your free to keep using. If anything, I’m the one who’s fucked here. I’m weak from bloodless because you shot me...twice. And I’m unarmed. So i think you’ll be fine if you just man up.”

With that being said, I set my attention on the gargoyle in the middle, clenching my fist.

“I’ll make the first move. ..So, If you guys wanna win, then help me by taking on your share of enemies.”

“I’ll make the first move. ..So, If you guys wanna win, then help me by taking on your share of enemies.”

Luckily, they realized the severity of the situation and listened. As I dashed forward, so did they, taking on their own gargoyle.

I charged at the middle gargoyle. His skin was thick like concrete, not something my bare hands could deal with. Punching him would only hurt me instead. So, i came in with a kick, connecting against the gargoyle’s jaw.

BMP!

It was just like kicking the sidewalk. It didn’t even move an inch. So, I followed up, kicking its knee. This time, my damage was visible. The gargoyle fell down on one knee, leaving it’s face wide open.

So i put my hand over its hand, and slammed the back of its head against the floor.

SLAM!

But it only stayed down no longer than a second. The gargoyle flung back to it’s feet, and reached out to grab me.

I sidestepped and mauvered behind it, kicking the back of its leg, then slammed a palm strike into the back of its head. Still, this thing wasn’t taking any real damage.

My eyes only closed for a split second, but when they opened again, they gargoyale was right in front of my face, it’s glowing eyes that screamed ‘death’ it’s jaw opened wide and bite down into my shoulder. The pain was instant, a bone crushing pain that brought me to my knees.

It hurt. It hurt so bad it made me angry.

My trembling voice shouted, in both agony and rage. I yanked my shoulder back, out of it’s mouth, it’s teeth, ripping through my flesh. My knuckles delivered an uppercut to it’s jaw, then a jab into its solar plexus. But that still wasn’t enough.

So I topped it off and set my knee into the side of where it’s rib cage would be.

‘...Still not enough???...’

I stumbled back, limping. My bone in my knuckles were showing, dripping blood down my hands. My knee felt like it was bruised and shattered.

‘Falling here means I lose.... I can’t lose my balance.’ it hurt more than anything, but i had to stay standing.

But could I win this?

Wack! Crumbled!

My eyes watched, like it happened in slow motion. The gargoyle concrete head, crumbled and blasted into dust, all under the swing of a sledgehammer.

As soon as the dust settled, the first thing I saw was Lisa’s proud grin.

“I didn’t think I had it in me, but this sledgehammer seems to be really effective against them.” her eyes shifted over to the blood wound on my shoulder, “...your poor shoulder isn’t having a good day.”

“Not...funny.” couldn’t help but grunt at her.

“I was going to help you first but, you seemed to be holding your own...and our useless teammate was on the verge of death again.”

But it looked like he was fine, other than a big open gash across his cheek.

“We should take a moment to rest...” is what I'd like to say.

As luck would have it, there wasn’t even a second more to rest. Angry footsteps came down the steps.

“I’ve had enough out of you three. It’s time you learned a lesson to bring with you into your next lives.”

I guess Lisa was feeling a little cocky. As soon as this lady came down the steps, Lisa sprinted directly at her, bashing the sledgehammer across her face.

WACK! DING!

A hit like that would’ve dropped someone or at least hurt them a bit. But it only made the lady’s face turn the other direction.

“...Hah. Weak.”

Her hand lifted Lisa by the throat then threw her across the room. From the moment Lisa’s back hit the wall, the lady’s fist struck her face.

It wasn’t clear if she was alive or dead, but her body went limp, face hitting the floor.

Host Maximilian’s echoes throughout the castle. His voice, invested in our unfortunate circumstances.

[Each team has a unique challenge that they're faces right now. But this team seems to have it the hardest. Level one and they’ve already run into a mini boss.]

The Lady’s arms opened wide, as if she was embracing her raw beauty and strength.

[A woman, a vampire at that. She’s fast, and hits harder than your abusive mother. If you can’t relate, then ignore what I just said. With the appearance of this mad woman of a boss, let’s see if this team can survive. I DONNN’T think so.]

[Oliver, Lisa, Kuro VS Julia Everild]

I sighed in relief. Lisa’s name was mentioned, so that must’ve meant that she was alive, just unconscious.

‘...I’m gonna get my ass kicked...I just know it.’

Either way, the boss fight begins.
