The King’s path
New beginnings

New beginnings

CH1

“I demand silence!” The towering sage beckoned. His words echoed  throughout the court with a deep resonance that can only be compared to the dense rumbling of a dragon's stomach.

“This court is officially adjourned, The Council of King’s find the defendant Lucius guilty of treason, murder and the conspiracy to enact the invocation! He will be hereby executed in the name of  Mo-.”

The voices began to blur as the weight and pressure of my own thoughts became denser and heavier, eventually overtaking everything around me.

‘Well this is it I guess. What an embarrassing display of myself, in front of all my people as well.’

‘Who would have thought that in my pursuit of perfection I would lose the reason I began my journey in the first place. It is befitting of me to have it end this way.’

‘Can I really say I’ve lived with no regrets? No, I would have liked to live differently. Perhaps in the next-.’

  “King Lucius!”

I unconsciously quiver and freeze as I am abruptly slingshotted back into reality. The sage's words piercing into my very soul, his dark but calculated eyes lasered onto me with an exertion akin to that of cold daggers embracing their victim.

“Do you have any last words?” His voice thundered. The conviction in the words he displayed could only signify one thing. Time is up and my story is over.

“…” a deafening silence pierced the building, it was as if everyone had forgotten how to speak. I could only look down in shame as my comrades and subjects gazed upon me with pity. Their energy became palpable and I could feel it  engulfing me from all sides even from the center of the circle.

“There is nothing left to say.” I spoke defeatedly, barely managing to get it out. It was too late for them to understand.

“Very well.” The great sage proudly armed and pointed the Staff of Conviction at me. A blinding gold ball of violent energy began to build up at the tip. So bright it overtook my entire visual field, the vibrations so powerful my ears rang like church bells at the start of the rapture.

‘Oh. It’s so warm. I thought death would be a lot colder and painful.’

I fell in and out of consciousness as my body failed to cope with the sensation overload. Visions of the past began to flood my mind as I floated through the white void in a dreamlike state. A brown haired woman approached me. Her smile radiated a warm energy as her gentle arms embraced me.

“Is that you mom? I’m sorry. I wasn’t strong enough to keep my promise.”

Before I could sentiment and reflect on our past  together she was abruptly taken by the void. There was only a short period of nothing before the warm  blanket of energy embracing me evolved into a blistering heat bringing the white void with it into an eternity of flames. Two piercing blood red eyes managed to stand out in all the chaos, a silhouette masked by the raging flames slowly approached me. Just as it was about to reach me the overwhelming heat had finally worn out my body.

“HOW DARE YOU!” I screamed with all I had left as everything faded into black.

My head was throbbing and my muscles were sore. Which was strange considering I should be dead right now. As I sat up and groaned, my eyes adjusted to the radiating light above me, I was greeted with a lush and serene landscape of green. The leaves silently swayed in the wind, and the birds chirped a melodic tune. It was enough to remind me of my late mother and the beautiful gardens she used to take me to. It was perfect, it was as if I had entered into the backyard of God itself.

“I can’t believe I made it to heaven” I chuckled to myself.

    *WHOOOSH*    *GLISHH*

“AGHHH” I screamed out in pain. I jolted backwards with an almost primal speed, only to see an electric gold cable lodged into my back. There was no blood, the weapon inserted into my body like a cable in a socket. Only ten meters away from me two men stood tall. Both clad in perfectly white robes from head to toe leaving only their neon white eyes visible.

‘Goddamnit it the one time I let my guard down. Are they angels? Maybe they are here to take me down to Hell.’

The two men approached me in synchronization.

‘No. It doesn’t matter, they obviously hold malicious intent.’

With my heightened adrenaline I try to yank the cable towards me with all the strength my tired body could produce. But as my grip came into contact with the cable, the gold began to come to life and cackled violently.

“AGGHH” thousands of electrical volts raced through my body. I spasmed onto the floor. The men were now staring directly at me from above. The pain grew exponentially with their gaze. The man who wielded the seemingly bionic cable held two fingers toward his ear.

“Sir. This is Dovak reporting, an intruder has been apprehended along the perimeter. How would you like us to proceed?”

  *unintelligible chatter*

“No sir. He does not have the mark, suspect appears to be a male juvenile, dark hair, athletic build.

  *unintelligible chatter*

“Understood. we will make preparations right away.”
