Chapter 14 Mr. Gregory Duphare

Mrs. Janette Duphare

Mr. Gregory Duphare

A cold sweat broke out all over my body. No, it couldn't be, but there were those names right there at the top of the list.

Married.

Had Miss Janette Duphare gotten herself married?

Shit.

Damn.

If she was married there wasn't any more question of guardianship noble or not. Her grandparents could do nothing.

I guess they could try and petition to get the marriage annulled but Janette Duphare was of age and if she didn't want the marriage annulled it wouldn't be.

Whoever this Gregory was he had to be of common blood for him to take her name. He wouldn't want an annulment either considering the vast fortune she had inherited.

Being married meant that even if I did manage to kidnap her, take her to her grandparents, it was unlikely that I'd be paid. It was more likely that I'd be arrested. While kidnapping a wayward heiress to return to the loving bosom of her family would be overlooked. Kidnapping a married woman and taking her away from her husband would not be. Especially, since when the grandparents found out she was married they would probably deny ever hiring me.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.

If the marriage was real that is.

There was the possibility that it was all just another cover for Miss Janette Duphare. Wanting to spend this time with her new beau she'd pretend they were married so to not bring any attention to an illicit love affair.

How to figure out if the marriage was real or not?

Well, the first step would be to make contact with Miss, no Mrs. Janette Duphare.

I quickly signed my name underneath theirs.

I would need to purchase the climbing gear. I hadn't packed any of the gear I used for not quite legal extracurricular activities. Good thing there was a discount. Since I had paid for my trip I didn't get the daily monetary bonus the lottery guests got. I didn't have that much coin left.

I'd need to make a trip to the casino. If I was careful, very careful, I may be able to earn back the 200 gold I'd borrowed for this trip. Just enough to break even. More than that would draw unwanted attention. If Janette Duphare was married at least I wouldn't be too far into debt.

Damn.

Don't put the cart before the horse. There was the possibility that it was all a sham. If that was the case I'd be paid on top of the 200 gold.

I hadn't planned to use my Luck here in this place where it was so risky, but I would have to. Just to be on the safe side. I couldn't afford default on the debt. My life literally hung in the balance.

Damn.
