Kardashev (Ch. 2)

Kardashev (Ch. 2)

University near Camp Renaldo 2031

Belle often daydreamed while she was in class. She couldn’t help but think back to her childhood. She remembered being a little girl in a perfect family. Her white picket fenced in yard with her small dog. She couldn’t even remember the dog’s name now. Her mom and dad loved her so much, it was a beautiful time in her life. She loved playing dress up and having tea parties with him, she was so attached to her daddy. One day, her father had come home from work early to surprise her mom. However, the surprise was hers.

She was in bed with the priest from their church, and one who had been caught molesting children. Belle’s father had killed the priest, and when the police showed up Belle had walked out of her room. She saw her father in the living room in tears, with a panicked expression on his face. Her mother was crying and she had a gun to her head. Belle remembered crying at the sight of this. She hated it when her parents fought. Her parents were soul mates, they were supposed to be happy. It made her happy. The police busted in the door and her dad said “I love you princess.”

As he shot her mother the police shot her father to death in front of her, and one man in particular rushed in to pick her up. She hugged him and cried with all her might. She didn’t understand death, didn’t understand what was going on. She ended up being adopted by that police officer, he too was a religious man. Unlike the priest she never trusted he was a kind hearted person, down to his core.

He took her in and taught her about God and the ways of the world. He was a good father to her, and he had no other children as his wife and he couldn’t conceive. They were good people. She thought about what a good man he was, and the sudden silence of the room she was in brought her back to reality. *Deep breath* the room was quiet while the professor spoke. He was a pale white man with Albert-Einstein reminiscent hair, blue pants and a white lab coat. He was your typical idea of a scientist when you rendered one in your mind. “The Kardashev scale is a method for measuring a civilization’s advancement by measuring power output.

There are five possible advancements on this scale. Now before we go into detail, does anyone know what Earth is on this scale?” A blonde haired woman was pushing her glasses up as she raised her hand to answer. “Yes, Ms. Kayer. Go ahead.” He nodded his head, and she spoke. “Earth is currently a type zero civilization, professor.” He motioned with his hands as he replied “Correct. Now how do we advance to a type one civilization, anyone?” She raised her hand again and the professor nodded “Currently we are in the most dangerous part of the transition to a type one civilization. The advancement from type zero to type one is the most dangerous of any advancements on the scale.” The professor interrupted “Yes, but how to we advance to a type one?” She felt nervous now, the whole of the class was looking at her and she never liked being a public speaker anyways. That is why she was in this class.

“We have to harness the power of the planet entirely.” She paused “We have to be able to collect and utilize all energy that reaches earth from our sun; we have to be able to store and use one hundred percent of that energy.” The professor was smiling now “Exactly correct! Moving on; we are at a crucial moment in our advancement where we have to make drastic decisions or we will blow ourselves up.” He took in a breath and looked at her “We have studied the cosmos and have not yet found evidence of any type one or further civilizations. However, we know that there should be thousands of type one civilizations. The problem is, many of these civilizations destroy themselves before reaching type one status.”

He looked around the class and everyone was paying close attention to him “We are at the breaking point. We have achieved a universally accepted global language, and our government is mostly global at this point. We have harnessed some fusion power, and our technology has advanced past anyone’s expectations for our current place in the timeline. However, we have problems in other areas. Weapons of mass destruction and war are some of our biggest enemies at this point. We have riots and civil war, destabilization in some rural areas of the world. We have integration problems, is what this comes down to. What do you suppose is the hardest obstacle is with integration?”

A Black man in the front of the class rose to answer the question “Go ahead Mr. Banks” the professor said, taking a seat in his chair and rolling to the edge of the platform he was on. “Sir, I believe the hardest part of society integrating is the multicultural barriers we face upon doing so. It’s hard for individual races or cultures to combine because of the history between them. If we were able to set aside differences as a whole and focus on becoming a type one civilization I believe we would already be there.” He cleared his throat as he finished talking “But professor, I theorize that much of society is unable to do this, as it is not everyone’s shared goal to achieve peace and focus on our advancement.” The professor was pleased “Thank you, Mr. Banks. You have a good take on what our problems with integration are.

These very problems will lead us to further war and destabilization. Your generation and your children’s generation are the ones that will ultimately determine if we achieve this or not. Though the world government is making strides to complete integration, we may not all agree with these decisions, however we must respect them and hope the great minds advising these individuals are truly doing things in support of our survival as a whole.” He took a sip from his cup of coffee “Let me end with a final point before we open discussion.

If you are preventing the society from advancing, if you see on the news and look at the people indulging in civil war and destruction. Those people are terrorists to our civilization. It is not too far to speculate that if you commit a hate crime, you are not only committing a hate crime but you are committing a crime against humanity itself. In the eyes of the focused, you are a detriment to society and should be removed. This “creed” if you will, will cause great pain in the times to come. No “God” and no “Deity” can prevent our destruction if that is the path humanity takes.”

Ms. Kayer raised her hand and he continued speaking “By this logic it is also true that no “God” or “Deity” can prevent us from advancing if that is the path we take. If we lose this war with ourselves, there will be no earth. There will be no one to save us, for each one of you hold the power to determine our fate. You must keep these precious ideals in your mind if we are to survive, and with that I’ll start with a few questions.” He saw many hands were raised at this point, and it was to be expected.

The professor pointed to Ms. Kayer “Professor, I believe that if God wants us to advance to a type one civilization we will. If the war to end all wars is inevitable, it must be the judgement day predicted in revelations. I think the biggest problem we have is our lack in faith, professor.” A few people lowered their hands; he speculated they were sympathizing with her views. He took a sip from his mug and replied, “We do not have time to discuss the evidence or lack thereof a “God” Ms. Kayer. What I will say is that if you refer to our problem being a lack of faith I would redirect you to saying it is a lack of integration. The faith you have and your religion itself may be considered an integration problem, one that must be overcome. Keep that in mind if you will.

“Professor I don’t believe you’re right to say religion is a problem, however-“The professor cut her off. “Next question please!” A red haired man in the back spoke next “If you say terrorists are the ones preventing our civilization from advancing, wouldn’t you say people such as Ms. Kayer whom believe in a religion are a part of our integration problem. Is she a terrorist? Are religions considered terrorist groups?” The class erupted at this, many people were arguing, “You’re a fucking terrorist!” another person “If religion is terrorism than so is atheism!” the professor rose “Quiet! Quiet!” he waved his hands “Let me answer the question.”

He paused for a few people to stop arguing, and a few were walking out of the room as he spoke “Take notice on how quickly you all reacted to Mr. Tormen’s question.” A few murmurs now. “This sort of discussion is unable to be conducted across the planet because of reactions just like this. If we are not able to put aside our beliefs...” he made eye contact with a few choice students “We are then unable to look at the discussion from a third point of view. You must put aside your personal beliefs when thinking about how to benefit humanity on a global scale. We must react in a logical manner that considers all sides of the argument before speaking. That ends today’s lesson.”

Ms. Belle Kayer was a full time student and had just started in the Navy as a Corpsman. She also worked at the hospital near her college on a military base called Camp Renaldo. She was a petite girl, only 5”1 and 110 pounds. She had blue hair and blonde eyes, and a heart full of hope. Belle wanted to become a doctor someday, but the Navy would pay for her school and train her at the same time so, that was her best option. Her patient at the hospital saddened Belle. He had unusual wounds and unusual circumstances surrounding his injuries. She was not allowed to ask any questions on his situation, and was limited to the time she could spend in the room. The handsome man intrigued her though. She felt the way he looked at her with his grey eyes, it made her shudder. She wanted to get to know him better but just could not make that happen right now. Oh well, maybe she should not be so attached to her patients. Belle was walking home and she just could not stop thinking about Mr. Grey.

This one night in particular when he was still unconscious in a medical coma she remembered having to change his catheters. She had volunteered to do so and he needed a wash when she went in, she was concerned about changing the catheters first and then giving him a wash before finally changing his bed linens. When she pulled his catheter out his was aroused in his sleep. It was the first time she had dealt with this sort of thing. She could not stop focusing on it. She went to wash him and gave him and couldn’t help but blush; she shivered at the thought of it even now. It was actually kind of exciting, taboo in her mind. Didn’t everyone fantasize now and then? She stopped early because she knew it was wrong to fantasize about your patients, but it was so exciting to her. She had never been that type of girl and it was completely out of her character, but something about Mr. Grey just attracted her to him.

She opened her front door of her apartment and walked inside, closing the door behind her and then taking her shirt off. Her bra came next, “Oh my god.” She said aloud. It felt so good to take that thing off after a long shift. Her pants came off next, taking her clothes off was the first thing she did when she got home.

She left her silk panties on though; she noticed she was still aroused. Belle blushed “I’ve got to stop thinking about that man!” she said aloud. Belle had a paper to study on tonight, she walked over to the island in her kitchen to pick up the remote and turn on the TV. Belle smelled the fresh scent of her lavender flameless candles and took in a deep breath as she opened the fridge to get something to eat. For a girl she knew she ate a lot, but she never seemed to gain weight! It was such a problem. On first dates, she always had to order something and take it home, and chances were she would finish it off when she got home. She had to act coy for her dates though; no one wants to see you chow down on an entire plate of nachos.

Belle opened the fridge and took out some General Tso Chicken and rice; she heated it up and was eating while she watched the television. This was her nightly ritual before studying. “There are protests in north Virginia due to the families of these prisoners being extremely upset by the changes from the legislation here. We fear that this may soon spread across the country...” she knew what they were talking about. The USA had been trying to eliminate some of its death row prison population and the long-term standard of waiting thirty or more years to be executed had come to a standstill. The new laws being pushed through meant that if you were convicted of a death sentence you had maybe 6 months top left to live as you were transitioned into a prison type of setting where they routinely rotated through cellblocks and put the inmates to death. This method was to decrease prison population and crowding, as well as increase the fear of breaking the law for such heinous crimes that would land you in that situation in the first place.

She thought it was kind of messed up at how many people would be basically executed over this but at the same time, if you have a120 year sentence why should everyone who didn’t break laws be paying for your medical bills the entire duration of your life inside there until the states were willing to put you to death finally. However though this made sense to her she definitely understood why families of these felons would be upset, their loved ones would be sentenced and executed for crimes before they had time to appeal them or go through the legal process. It was a rough deal, but maybe would increase the effectiveness of prisons. “Lawmakers here are saying that anyone with over 100 year sentence may be converted into these type of prisons to undergo a “Cleansing” they call it.

Protestors are comparing the Government to WW1 death camp and even mentioning Adolf Hitler on some of these signs.” That was it for Belle. She had to turn the new off as she finished her last couple of bites of chicken and rice. She headed into the bedroom and left the kitchen light on. Her wood tile floor was cold against the skin, her footsteps echoes in her empty house on the way to her room. It was dark in here, for a second she felt scarred before she turned on the lights.

She had always been afraid of the dark. “Hello Shadow!” She said. Her cat was on the bed, he arched his bank and began stretching and purring. She reached down “How’s my baby doing? What have you been up to?” Meow! Meow! The cat spoke as if to reply to her. “Have you been coloring? Huh?” Meow! She sat down and took out her computer. It was time to finish her paper on the Kardashev scale. What a weird class she had to take in addition to her medical classes. They always discussed such random things. She lifted up the covers and got herself comfortable, her single cup coffee maker was on her nightstand and she turned it on. The only thing she liked more than her house smelling like vanilla was it smelling like coffee. Belle opened up her documents and was moving her toes around under the cold sheets. She loved the cold feeling of the sheets against her smooth legs.

Belle began pulling up a few articles now. Shadow came up to her and snuggled next to her side as she began to pet him. One of the articles she was looking into was talking about how the earth was having a bad time transitioning into a type one civilization. She wondered, “Is this shit even real?” it seemed like an impossible goal. It would be so difficult to control 100% of the earth’s energy and control things such as earthquakes and hurricanes. Capturing all the energy the sun sends to earth was another ridiculous challenge. Though fusion was becoming more prominent throughout the earth, it was still something only the main countries had and they were just beginning to understand how it worked in small scale anyways.

Belle took a break from reading the article to ponder on it for a moment. “I believe...” she spoke out loud to her cat “I believe we are all connected on some level. It might be God, it might not be. It might be something higher than that, or something simpler.” She had read thing on humans having a collective consciousness before but dismissed it as nonsense. “I’ve never been big into God. My parents were. Isn’t that right Shadowww?” she patted him on the head. Her coffee rang done, it smelled so good in her room. She was sipping on it trying to think about how to write this paper. Hers had to be on suggestions and ideas on what the major issues humanity is facing with becoming a type one civilization. Just then it hit her “The news!” she remembered what was playing when she walked in the house.

The people rioting and having civil wars across northern America due to these laws. This was a milestone that was to be overcame. But how? Is it acceptable? Should the families just accept these changes? It was a difficult subject to think about. Millions of people were going to die from this law in a short period of time. Belle thought about what the professor said earlier concerning humans that were against or causing problems for integration were a detriment to society.

She started writing her paper commenting on how if you were in prison with a life sentence, you could not benefit humanity in anyway way and were likely to be a detriment to life in general as a hole. Through facts she wrote this controversial paper, and though she didn’t agree with it. Based on the logic from the professor, they were committing crimes not only against their victims but against humanity itself. If they were eliminated it would make the population still remaining only slightly better. The families of those effected might even be partially to blame to, as they are likely to be affected by the same environment that caused their family member to go to prison. If your brother goes to jail for drugs, chances were high you did drugs too. Your parents might too, and maybe others in your family. The chances were multitudes higher for this than a family that had not had anyone enter the legal system as an inmate.

So, she came to a conclusion. “If you were in prison with a life sentence, and were never getting out. It would help humanity progress towards our goal as a type one civilization if you were put to death. Furthermore, if you are rioting and acting out due to these changes, you are also a detriment to humanity and should be placed in prison too. “It was so controversial to even write, she was appalled at her own words. But was it true? Either way, her paper would be interesting for the professor to read. It took her a couple hours to finish the paper before she settled down for bed and put her laptop off to the side of the bed and curled up with Shadow. She passed out cold thinking about Dillon Grey.
