The reason this would work would be because the poison, which is the greatest impossibility, loves to destroy what was meant to be and create things that shouldn't be. It was less of a poison and more of a monster.
So when it resurfaced and affected the current ruler of the god realm, the High God of Light, the gods panicked. In their blindness to the pricelessness of life they chose to sacrifice an innocent to save the guilty, like any hypocritical being would do.
However in their haste, they misunderstood the destiny of the one they chose.
