Belated Rendezvous

Belated Rendezvous

When the SPG gradually brought them back into normal space time, Milo took a look at data coming into the computer.

"No sparks flying yet" Milo said. "Looks like we got here on time."

"Looks like the elves aren't going to give a whole lot of support" Kayla said looking at the small band of ships in orbit around the planet. "Do you know where we're going?"

"This spacecraft has the armada information feed on it" Milo said. "They're launching from an airfield about 8 miles east of Alpha Base." They got into the atmosphere and headed toward the airfield. As they got closer, they could see many hundreds of specs on the ground for a long ways around the base.

"A3 Hadrons" Milo said admiring the very large collection. From the ground at the base they could be seen as far as the eye could see. When they landed, many pilots were quickly making their way towards their crafts to begin pre-flight tests and await take-off orders. They hurried up into the terminal, which was fairly large and nice-looking. Everyone was moving around at a rapid pace and no one seemed to notice that they had walked in. They walked around looking for signs of Victor, but couldn't see anyone.

"Kayla? Milo?" said a familiar-sounding voice somewhere from around them. It was a mildly handsome guy with black hair and coffee-colored skin.

"Roman!" Kayla yelled walking quickly over to hug him.

"I've been trying to get in contact with you two for a while now? What are you doing here?"

"We came here to see if Victor" Kayla said.

"He left yesterday. This was really not a good place for you to come. Do you not have any lines of communication with Victor?"

"No" Kayla answered. "I ran out of entangled qubits with him on my computer and my phone had a virus that removed the rest – long story there – and I haven't been able to have any contact with him."

"Where have the two of you been?" Roman asked them perplexed.

They explained the whole story to him of Kayla getting reassigned, her getting rescued, their meeting the princess in disguise and everything else.

"My goodness" Roman said. "You two certainly have a taste for adventure don't you."

"Tell me about it" Kayla said sarcastically. "Now do you know anything about who might have sabotaged the ship I was on?" Roman turned to look around him. By this time most had left the building.

The author's narrative has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

"Bohr's looking into it" he said softly. "But it's hard, as he doesn't have the…privileges he used to have."

"How's he doing?" Milo asked.

"Okay for now" Roman said. "I keep telling him he needs to just retire, because whoever is going after the two of you could easily get to him."

"He's not the one that revealed the truth about Icarus Beed's fleet to the world" Kayla remarked.

"Oh, I'm fairly sure this is more about that" Roman said. "I never actually had the chance to rendezvous with the two of you during your mission to explain a lot of this to you. Finding clue to Matt Snedecor's whereabouts was really the secondary objective of that mission."

"We were sent there to find one of the most coveted hominids in the galaxy" Kayla said. "What could we have done that was bigger than that?"

"The mission to get Snedecor was just for the purpose of paperwork to file with the intelligence committee. The main goal for that mission was to gather what data you could on Greenpeace."

"Greenpeace?" Milo asked puzzled.

"Yes. Hominids for Sustainable Growth is really just a front for their organization. One of many fronts."

"I've heard of them" Kayla remarked. "It's a very old organization that once was a bourgeois environmental organization in the terrestrial era that now just does some lobbying."

"Oh, it's a lot more than that. It's an organization that helped launch Henry Alamore's presidency two generations ago and started the Alamore dynasty. Bohr's been able to get his hand on some documents, and they've been able to conceal a very large amount of assets, including those being concealed in Avistra's fiefdom."

"You think they're a proxy for Avistra?"

"Possibly" Roman said, "but what's sure is that they have become an immensely powerful organization, and as soon as we started we started digging around for documents and recording and files relating to Icarus Beed's fleet is when things sarted to happened. Kayla was transferred, the Royal Intelligence Service requested an on-site questioning of Milo, Roy McGrath replaced Bohr…"

"And you think Greenpeace that is after us?" Kayla asked putting on her skeptical face.

"They're a prime suspect. I don't think you understand just how powerful they are. These people have strings on the most powerful members of congress in all our political factions as well as President Alamore."

"So why are they after us?" Milo asked.

"Can't say for sure, honestly. I don't think they really suspect Bohr is working against them, but the two of you have the propensity for snooping, plus you're known collaborators with the Network. I'm really sorry." Roman shook his head at saying that. "I can find both of you a place to hide if you need it, but I guess you're hiding with the Network, aren't you?" They both nodded their heads.

"Well…good luck" he said. "Let me know if there's anything I can do for you."

"Let us know if there's anything we can do" Kayla said taking Roman's and Milo's phones to entangle cubits on both of them. "We want to help get us out of the cross-hairs if possible" Kayla said.

"I'm not very hopeful, honestly. I'm betting Bohr or someone in congress can get the two of you hooked up with jobs that won't make you as much of a threat to them."

"We've been offered a chance to work with Zorthia's faction of the HDD" Milo said. "We plan to take it."

"Well, then" Roman said seeming surprised. "That should be interesting. Look, I need to get going, and you two probably need to get out. If the fighters can't hold here, you could be taken prisoner." They parted ways, Milo and Kayla back for their spacecraft they came on and Roman up the elevator to the tower.
