Ch. 1 The Holy Devils

The Holy Devils (Pilot)

“No need to be alarmed. All of those pure of heart can rest at ease. My job only requires me to harm the unworthy. That being said, If you’re the kind of person to lay hands on other people for your own benefit or to cover up your own insecurities . . . You’re already dead.”

“Killers be killed . . . Killers be killed . . . Killers be killed . . . Killers be killed . . .”

A cold breeze rushed through the open streets of the city’s plaza as the building-mounted Displays all faded to black and repeated this message.

“W-What is this?! It has to be a hoax, Right!?!”

“That’s right, It can’t be anything more than a shitty prank by a group of low-lifes. Don’t worry about it.”

“I-I’m getting out of here!”

. . .

“AND WHAT THE HELL IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN!?!?” A large man in a business suit exclaimed as he jumped onto the top of a parked car in an attempt to get the people’s attention.

“I FIND IT EXTREMELY IRRATIONAL THAT ANYBODY HAS THE GULL TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THI-”

His breath was suddenly cut short. What was once a loud bellowing voice staggered to gagging and choking.

“H-help me. P-please. It can’t be . . .”

As he was speaking his body began to slowly float into the air. Pressure marks were visible on his neck.

Then all at once his head burst leaving a pool of blood to rain over the crowd. Silence. The calm before the storm.

-Highland High School, One year earlier-

Class was beginning to let in as the students all ushered in through the classroom doors. Light chatter could be heard among them as they all made their ways to their respective seats. At once, A dark figure casually walked into the room passing by the other students without a word. He took a seat next to a young girl, looked in her direction and quickly tapped her on the shoulder. Startled, she looked over at him only for her expression to fade to relief. It was one of her long-time best friends, Cielo.

“Yo! I had to wait all weekend to see you. Do you know how long that felt without you?” Cielo Smugly said. She giggled and leaned in closer towards him. He had narrow intimidating brown eyes and similarly brown silky hair that went most of the way down his neck. He was relatively tall and muscular. On the outside he looked to be intimidating but was a nice person once you got to know him. And then there was Skye, One of his childhood bestfriends that he had spent the majority of his life growing up with and the person that he was sitting at his desk talking to. She had long flowing brown hair and eyes similarly to Cielo. She wasn’t nearly as tall as him, however, And was only around five feet tall.

Before Skye could say anything she was cut off by the teacher who had walked into the room to begin class.

“Now I hope you’ve all finished last night's worksheet and have it ready to be turned in. Remember, This is a very important part of your grade.”

Upon hearing this Cielo slumped back into his chair in order to appear to be collected despite the cold sweat running down his face. Skye, Who took notice of Cielo, reached for her completed paper and quietly slipped it onto his desk. Cielo quickly took notice, Hastily thanked her, and scribbled the answers onto his paper in a matter of minutes before quietly returning it to her as if nothing had happened. Skye smirked as she looked back up towards the teacher.

After the teacher went around the classroom collecting papers she began the lesson. They were beginning a new unit about forgotten cultures and their folklore. During this class period in particular, They were learning about the Flügel. The Flügel were an ancient tribe who had rich folklore which they passed down generation through generation. The main one, however, claimed that any single person, Without limitations, could gain unexplainable superhuman powers. It was said that this was an extremely rare phenomenon and could only be realized under very specific circumstances. This being that the person in question would have to undergo some sort of emotional event or epiphany so powerful for their state of mind to manifest as some sort of ability. It was described that this was extremely rare though and that very few were lucky, or in some cases, unlucky enough to have an ability ever manifest. It was said that they referred to these abilities as “Spirits”.

As class was letting out Skye jumped from her chair towards Cielo so she could walk with him to their next class. Soon after though, they went their separate ways to get to each of their respective classes. Moments after Skye left, Cielo’s aura of energy quickly faded. He looked down at the ground as he slowly walked towards his next class. Blending further into the crowd he felt less like an individual and more like another lonesome person in the crowd.

All of a sudden Cielo felt his body crash against the lockers and a tight grasp on his right shoulder.

“And where the hell do you think you’re goin?” A voice exclaimed, Hovering over Cielo.

“I was on my way to my third period class before before I had the displeasure of running into you punk bastards again” Cielo quietly murmured as a grin began to form on his face

“AND WHAT THE HELL IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN!?!”

“You guys sure ask a lot of questions, Why don’t I take a turn? Of all the people in this school, Why do you target me?”

“It’s because quiet shits like you always get on my nerves. And of all times, Now you have so much confidence? It just makes me hate you even more!”

“Wrong answer. For the record, You’ve never made me feel fear. I’ve never fought back because I worry that I’ll hurt you too much or even kill you. Secondly, I have my reasons for keeping quiet and none of them are your business. I don’t see any reason as to why it should set you off so much aside from it being an excuse for you to use me as a personal punching bag as a means to vent. So before you continue I advise that you do so with caution.” The figure hesitated for a second at Cielo’s words before retaliating.

“You talk up a big game but it’s all bluff, I can feel it. JUST TRY AND LAY A FINGER ON ME, I DARE YOU!!!” The figure was now yelling, Spit flying from his face into Cielo’s.

“Before you’re begging for your life, I’d like to remind you that you asked for this.” In an instant a faint dark aura grew around Cielo’s body. From behind his back sprung nearly a dozen dark hands. Every one of them was pure black. looking into them felt the same as staring into a void. The fingertips of each of them were multiple times sharper than human hands. Before the figure could notice, Cielo used one of the hands to reach behind him and stab him in the neck before using another to grab him by the top of his head. His limp body was now hanging several feet in the air.

“This is what you wanted wasn’t it?” Cielo said while the psychotic grin on his face grew larger. He grasped tighter onto his skull and began violently slamming his body against the lockers for several seconds before throwing him back onto the ground. Cielo then leaned over his battered corpse curiously.

“You’re still alive, right?” Several seconds passed without an answer.

“Good, Now why don’t you go make yourself useful and go tell your friends to leave me alone from here on out, okay?” Cielo said in a chipper voice before returning to standing upright again.

“For the record, I didn’t want to have to do this to you.” He said as he turned his back the other way and continued to walk to his third period class as if nothing had happened.

By lunchtime later that day rumors were already spreading like wild-fire. While everybody knew what happened, due to the leniency of rumors, few knew who was actually involved. Cielo casually walked into the cafeteria so as to not draw any attention to himself as he made his way to his table where his friends sat.

“Man, I always feel so lonely when I’m not with you guys” Cielo said as he fell into his seat and began to comfortably slump back. He looked over at Skye as she immediately began to question him about the incident that happened earlier that day.

“Did you hear about the fight in the halls after the second period? Do you know who was involved?” Skye asked as she was practically jumping out of her seat with excitement and curiosity.

“Really? Knowing you guys I’m surprised you didn’t just assume it was me.”

“Wait, What!? Was it really?”

“Slow down, I was just joking. That being said though, hypothetically speaking, What would you say if it was me?” A new voice began to speak from the other end of the table.

“I personally wouldn’t mind at all. We are all based in fighting against leeches like those aren’t we?” A tall and lanky figure was now speaking. He was around six and a half feet tall and had silky black hair that flowed to the side. He was muscular yet thin, His face was rigid and well defined but he bore distinct eyelashes and when he spoke he did so in a subtly feminine demeanor.

“Humor me for a second, though. You didn’t use your s-” He was abruptly cut off.

“So what if I used my spirit? Like it would matter that much.” Cielo said while looking at the figure.

“C-Cielo!” Skye yelped in concern before quickly settling again.

“J-just be more careful, okay? We’re trying to keep this a secret.”

“Okayyy” Cielo said begrudgingly. The figure spoke up again

“You never told me you went that far, After that I doubt he’s even alive. You shouldn’t be so obvious, Cielo.

“Y-yeah, I agree with Jay, It’s fine though.” Skye said. Afterwards a silence fell over the group for another few minutes.

Breaking the silence, Skye began to speak;

“Takeshi. Have any of you ever heard of that name?” Skye asked.

“I’m afraid I haven’t.” Cielo said.

“Neither have I.” Jay also chimed in.

“Supposedly, He’s involved in all sorts of illegal undercover drug deals around our city. Guys, This is our chance. We've always wanted to use our powers to restore peace by eliminating people like this from the shadows. Up until now we’ve barely scratched the surface of doing anything big like this. This is our chance to get our name out there!!” Skye said excitedly.

“I know It’s naive to say this, But the prospect of it already has me pumping with excitement.” Cielo said

“We can finally live up to our name. The group that would stop at nothing to achieve their goal, ignoring all moral boundaries and fighting evil with evil.” Cielo smirked as he stood up from his chair.

“That’s why we call ourselves the Holy Devils!”
