The Heart of the New World
Leon's Supplementary Chapter

Leon's Supplementary Chapter

“The world’s fuel reserves are only enough for three more days.” Announced the television. “Nations worldwide enacted policies that restricts fossil fuel usage as the last wells run dry. The geologist had mistaken the last big oil field as an empty crater, and nobody corrected it since the whole report was made twenty years ago. Nations were not able to build enough renewable energy generators to cope with the demands of the people. Cars, smart houses, research, robots they all have one in common. All of use work with electricity. The UN tried to address the problem, but it divided into two factions. The far-right, the Commercialists and the far-left, the Futurists even clash at this very moment.”

“These people are stupid. Why didn’t they just pay attention to the details?” A colleague asked.

“The Commercialists do not care about a better future, they just want to fill their pockets. You know what we are building, right? It is a mean to control people.” Another colleague replied.

“The Futurist are at least doing their best for humanity. They have started to mobilize all their funds to build those batteries, but the world is not capable enough to produce them in time. They are just mostly the opposition. Commercialists are populist, you know.” He continues ranting.

“Well, the UN made this project possible, so I cannot say anything. Mostly everyone agreed.”

“Are you a fucking Commercialist?”

“No, I am fucking your mother.” Someone in the background shouted.

“I do not care, have work to do.”

“Who said anything bad about the Commercialists?”

“So what?”

“You twat.”

“They want to make the world their brothel. They want a system that increases their revenue, rather than providing a proper future. They want a system, where energy is used instead of money, and we will be dependent on them, if this project is finished. They will make laws that bans renewable energy under some silly excuse. Do you want to be a slave?”

“Those filthy Futurists want to acquire power for themselves. What they say is impossible to put into practice. Free energy? Free food? Bah. People will just take everything without second thought. It is anarchy. Do you want to live in a world, where thefts and revolts are commonplace?”

“Stop this childish argument. We have not come here for nothing. We have to finish the project in three days. Why aren’t you working?” said Leon, the manager of the Project Blackheart. He was sitting in the back of the canteen and was working on some biometric properties, when these two started to argue.

“Excuse us.”

“Go.”

“Yes, sir.”

“We have a meeting with the most influent shareholder of the Sons of Prometheus group, which includes Navitas Consilium, Fritjofrs Fingrar and Allgemeines Vernüftig companies, and the latter is our employer. So we need a product, even if it’s not finished. Initialize the modul…” He stood up as well and ventured to the mentioned place.

The shareholder arrived sometime after they finished the preparations.

“Good day to you, sir.”

“Afternoon. How are things?”

“We did not fully finish Teutonic Discharger, yet.”

“Yet?”

“Yes, we have to improve the magnetic induction...”

“Bah. I haven’t read the reports on that thing.”

“We have built a machine that harvest the tectonic energy and the tension of the layers to create electricity. That is simple.”

“We had another project, right? I mean we were hired to conduct both of those project.”

“You mean Project Blackheart? We built the hubs so that they could remain intact for millions of years. It is the same with the Vault, which can be opened with some pre-manufactured genetic material. We have put some parts of the code into the hubs, so that if one gets hacked, one would get only a quarter of the key. There are a lot of knowledge we could not upload to the hubs, yet. The whole territory is autonomous, by the way, so we do not even have to import food and basic commodities.”

“What kind of genetic material?”

“The perfect human. Contains genes that grants resistance to several illnesses, needs less intake of nutrients, it always produces a high intelligence ratio. The person can even have natural platinum blonde hair and red eyes. I have designed it to be male…” Leon started to get excited.

“Well done like the steak I use to eat.” The shareholder laughed, but nobody else did. It was a bad joke, even for dank scientists.

“Whoever controls this Vault, controls the world, or so. We have all the technologies from all around the world. We encountered some problems at the hubs. We couldn’t get into the others no matter what. We could only access from the Vault.”

“Because we didn’t want it.”

“I understand. We have just installed the door and the biometric locks. One would need huge amounts of data to get in, so someone has to manufacture this genetic material efficiently…”

“That is strange. Why did you have to close that Vault?”

“I was given an order by another supervisor.”

“Will you introduce the machine to me? I have to turn in a written report, you know.”

“Come with me. We have placed the demo in the Vault.” They moved to the door of the Vault, but it was not yet closed. Entering the hall, there was a huge metal structure, whose outside resembled a human heart. It was called the Tectonic Discharger.

“It uses tectonic tension, seismic waves, geothermal heat, the magnetic field and the core of the Earth. It will be like a huge dynamo. By injecting several materials to the core that will make it rotate faster.”

“Isn’t that magnificent?”

“This technique is still in development. Last time we put it into use, it generated about a hundred thousand terra-watt per hour.”

“I want to see it work.”

“It is still in development.”

“Still. I have a job to do.”

“No.”

“Do you want to be fired?”

“We still do not know what the consequences will be.”

“Well, it is time to find out.”

“We haven’t finished the programme yet.”

“But you have the most important parts, right?”

“That does not work like that.”

“Still…”

“No.”

“You are fired. Everyone! We are to start the machine.” He shouted. “Anyone not following my orders will be punished accordingly.” Everyone was afraid of his reach and power. Setting up the machine, the new module was added to the Tectonic Discharger, which was prepared long time ago, but was too dangerous to use. It started to boost, giving out a strange sound that was no gracious tithe to the world. Some shockwaves could be felt, but nothing serious. Or they thought so…

“Geologists report worldwide tremors and earthquakes… Uprisings have started in the cities, as continents were ripped apart… caused panic… food is not paid for... buildings in ruins… sewage system destroyed… this was total annihilation.” Quoted scarcely a radio in the near vicinity of the research team. Panicking, a scientist slipped and hit a button that closed the Vault’s door.
