“Okay, let’s go over the baby checklist. Let’s see: said first word, momma of course, proceeded from crawling to walking to running in a good time frame, avoided eating anything harmful, except for a booger or two, oh and we met the neighbors who had twins the same age. Anything else I missed on normal baby growth? No? Seems its time kick Evan into high gear now. Alright, now shall we go to that shelf that daddy has always said not to touch?”
Little chubby baby Evan suddenly has an urge to get those things on Daddies shelf. He hoists himself up and sneaks into in study. He pulls on one of them, which he could reach, with all his might. Right when he thought it was never going to come out he suddenly found his second wind and pulled harder and it popped out and fell. Euphoria was the correct word for how Evan felt, until the large object hit him in the head.
Vera :“It’s okay you’re not hurt, suck up them tears. Men don’t cry! Think happy thoughts. Remember your friends.”
All the cheering seemed to be unable to stop the flood gates, but Baby Evan managed to only whimper
“Good crisis averted. *sigh* this whole baby coaching thing is very tiring. Well the sooner he gets smarter to quicker I get a break, so have at thee* points enthusiastically at book *.
Evan opens the book up and there are pictures and scribbles in his mind. He lets his mind wander while looking at all the pretty pictures. After a moment or two Evans mom Victoria starts calling his name and find him in the study look at a book. Evan proud of his discovery shows his mom the thing with all the pretty pictures. She leans down to see which book he had grabbed.
“Oh my Evan do you like the magic book? Daddy bought that when he was younger, though he could never make use of it. Want mommy to show read you a story?”
Seeing this going down Vera jumps to action
“Don’t let her take your pretty pictures, pretty picture, pretty pictures.” She kept repeating it so he wouldn’t get distracted.
When Victoria tried to replace the book on magic with a story book he refused to let go. Starting to tear up she announce her defeat.
“Okay honey, can you show me which picture you like the most?”
Very excited Evan flipped through the pages and picked several out and looked up at his mommy for his to join in the excitement.
“Dis one Mommy, but I like dis one too.”
Stuck between two diagrams his mom read out what one of them did.
“Let’s see this green one is called Enhance Vegetation growth.”
Getting completely confused, he looks up inquisitively. Seeing her son with a confused face she brought him outside. She points at the ground with one hand and traces the formation with the other.
“Growth!” she shouted and a flower grew to Evan’s height
Very excited he shouted how amazed he was and asking for an encore.
“Sorry Evan, I don’t have very high connection with Nature Mana, so I can’t do it very often.”
Seeing her son get down from not being able to see it again she came up with an idea.
“Hey Evan do you want to give it a try, It’s not a very hard spell, so you should be able to do it.”
Excited he might be able to do it himself he hurriedly asked for how to do it.
“Okay Evan, all you have to do is trace the pictures lines with one hand and point to a plant with the other. Then shout Growth!”
Excited he traced the pattern sloppily and pointed at a flower and Shouted growth. He waited and nothing happened. Seeing the disappointment, his mother urged him to keep trying. He tried once more and slowly traced the picture and shouted growth with all his might. He waited and still nothing happened. He stepped back and fell down with no energy left, and started to cry.
“Mommy, why won’t it grow? I *sniff* just wanted to make a pretty flower for mommy. Why won’t mine grow like yours?” He proceeded to cry himself into a fit and fell asleep. Victoria pick up her son and his book and took them to bed.
“It’s going to be alright. I’ll wait for your flower as long as you need.” With that she kissed him on the forehead and left him to sleep. She went to the kitchen to finish cleaning up for the day and to prepare for tomorrow. The door opened up and Evans Dad walked in.

“Hey honey, how did the fields look today?”
He responded with a kiss,” They looked great today. Strangest thing though, I was weeding and all of a sudden all the corn shot up at least a foot or so. Then, it happened again but this time they grew twice as big. I asked around and all the other guys are saying it happened on their crops as well.”
Feel exuberant she grabbed him and danced and kissed. Then she was about to say what happened with Evan and then it hit her. She stopped dancing and started thinking
“It can’t be. About what time did they grow?” almost shaking her husband to get the answer.
“Calm down okay. It was probably around noon maybe a little after. Why to do ask?
Starting to panic she explains what happened today with Evan. First he was a little mad Evan had been in his study then excited at his son wanting to learn magic. Then when all the pieces fell into place his face went pale. Doubt and reason convinced him it was a coincidence, then they felt the earth shake.
“Vicky get Evan!” Panicking a bit, he ran outside to their shelter as opened it up thinking it was bandits.
With all three of them in the shelter huddled up. Evan was still dead asleep. After a moment or two the shaking stopped.
“Paul go out there and see what happened. “
Angry that she was shoving him in front of the potential danger, he begrudgingly got up to inspect what happened. Grabbing am old sword he pushed the door open and looked around. It was still dark out so his visibility was quite bad. He got close to the house and stopped dead in his tracks. With no hesitation he ran back screaming at Victoria to get out here. He got to the shelter and practically yanked the door off and poked his head in.
“You are not going to believe this.”
Almost a sprint he was pulling his wife who was holding Evan.
“Slow down, slow do..” her mouth just could stay open she was looking at a the largest rose she has ever seen in her life.
She then remembered what Evan had said.” I was just wanting to make you a pretty flower.” Tears began welling up in her eyes. Then after looking at the little angel in her arms she resolutely announced
“Cut it down. If the others knew what Evan did, he will be taken from us.”
Paul, who agreed with her, ran back to the barn and took out his axe. After working until the wee hours of the morning he had cut down the tree. It felt like a tree, and looked like a tree, so it had to be a tree. He pulled the ‘tree’ into the woods by using the farm horse. He got back to the house in time for breakfast. Dropping down into the chair hard he look at his wife,” I’m never getting you flower again. I might puke if I see another rose.”
Victoria just looked at him and started to laugh. After a good minute or two of laughing at his expense she straightened herself.” Until he is older Evan can’t learn magic, it’s too dangerous for him to be exposed. He will end up attracting a whole bunch of attention and not the good kind.”
Paul fully agreed but he had concerns,” that’s fine but you saw how much he liked that book. Do you think he will stop just because we say no? If you’re okay with it I think we can have him work with me in the fields. He gets the knowledge and exercise. I think he won’t drop magic unless we distract him.”
Victoria was apprehensive to the idea of a 5 year old working in the fields.” That’s fine but he has to go to school and he can’t be in the fields for more than an hour. That’s the only way this will work.”
With a nod from Paul they both go to wake their little green thumb bandit.
