Interlude 3

The people of Geniva, a small city that had been broken in half by Genesis’s arrival, had been blessed beyond belief. How else could they explain the arrival of the Lord, their savior and divine leader?

Walking down the paved road in the center of town, the Lord ignores most of the people kneeling down around him in supplication. They were nothing more than little peasants, small beings whose job was to supply him with anything that he needed. His eyes are focused on Lilian, a young woman from a farming family who stands a few feet back, the only among the group not throwing themselves at him.

Walking up towards her, he takes her hand and brushes his lips over her knuckles in greeting.

“Hello my dear, how are you doing today?”

Her face scrunches up in conflicting emotions. Fear and disgust appear first, her body recoiling from the Lords touch, but these are slowly replaced by an almost reluctant adoration. Her movements are jarring, switching back and forth among eagerness and reluctance. Through all of this her eyes look uonto the Lord and remain constant, filled with anger. She cannot stop herself from responding.

“I a-am good my Lord. How are you?”

“I am doing well my dear. I was hoping we could go for a walk together, will you join me?”

Her will tries to fight as her body nods her head eagerly, his arm slipping around hers as he begins to walk away from the supplicants and worshipers from the town. She screams at herself in her mind, trying with all her might to escape from his grasp but her body walks with his as if there were no problems at all. He begins to hum a little tune, continuing their entire walk until they find themselves on a cliff facing the sea. A few white clouds dot the sky above them as they sit down in the vibrant green grass, a nice ocean breeze flowing over them. The grass flutters with every gust of wind and the water crashes against the rocks below them, huge waves that batter down the cliff face. Time is their ally in their endless battle. The rocks hold steady for decades, even centuries, but eventually the waves will break them down and continue their battle against the next layer.

They sit there in silence for a few moments until the Lord begins to speak, looking out at the waves below.

“You know, you’re the only one who seems able to resist me. Every one of those idiots throws themselves at me, does anything I want, and yet you stand to the side.” Lilian’s body leans in to listen, as if eager to hear his words, while her eyes widen and terror becomes visible. She screams at herself to fight but nothing happens.

“None of you have any idea what I had to go through to get where I am now. How could any of you know? You all got to be cozy and safe on Earth while I …”. He stops for a second, obviously overcome with some sort of emotion. After a few seconds he opens his eyes back up and looks out over the sea, a small family of dolphins playing in the far distance.

“You all got it easy. You didn’t get attacked and tortured Just Because You Were New!”. He emphasizes each of the last word with a yell, almost spitting them out in accusation. For the first time, Lilian is able to see beyond the front that the Lord puts on for the city. She is finally able to see into his soul. And she is absolutely terrified. He turns to her with wide eyes and continues, losing himself in the memories and almost screaming. “None of you were forced to endure the pokers, or the tongs, or the mind games, or the FUCKING FIRE!”

He stands up, holding onto her arm, and begins violently dragging her towards the cliff. The sound of the waves gets louder and louder, each one crashing with a thunderous boom.

“And then I finally figured out a way to make it stop! A little Skill, a little luck, and a whole lot of Charisma, can you believe it? I figured out how to make those fuckers do what I wanted!”

They now stand right on the edge of the cliff, the Lord holding Lilian by her arm has the wind whips her hair all around her. He looks into her face and she finally sees the madness in his eyes. The man in front of her is irrevocably broken and yet she is completely at his mercy.

“I finally am able to get home, after months on that fucking planet, and things are suddenly right! All my suffering … all the torture … it’s okay because I figured out how to be in control, to be loved! I’m finally enjoying myself after so long and then what happens? YOU FUCKNG HAPPEN! Everyone is supposed to love me and yet you just back away! You even talk behind my back, trying to convince them not to love me! You try TO BREAK MY DREAM”

Lilian begins shaking, his hold on her beginning to fray as he loses control of himself. Despite this, his grip remains locked on her arm, a vise that she can’t break. He begins pushing her towards the cliff, overpowering her light struggles, until her feet are right on the edge and the only thing holding her back is his grip on her arm. She opens her mouth to try and beg but no words come out, his control still slightly lingering.

He looks at her with his mad eyes and whispers, the words managing to carry through the wind and end up in her ear.

“And no one breaks my dream"

He lets go of her arm and she falls off the edge to the rocks below, hearing the sounds of each wave hitting the cliff louder and louder until she hears them no more.

Smiling to himself, madness clearly visible in his eyes, the Lord begins humming a song and walking back towards the city.
