Chapter 138 - Aiming for the King

Chapter 138 - Aiming for the King

A massive beam of light cut through the sky, steam hissing where it impacted the ocean. A sleek, furred body danced among the waves, twisting and turning to avoid the beam. The figure breached the waves and spun about, tossing a paw out.

Blue runes appeared in the air and dropped into the ocean, bright stars surging forth under the waves. They traveled until they reached just under the origin point of the beam…

And then a massive spike of ice shot from the ocean.

“Gah!”

An armored figure dropped from the sky, a massive laser cannon falling from its grip and green blood streaming from a hole in its armor.

The furred body twisted back around, racing across the waves towards the falling figure.

The Otter King leapt from the sea and tore the creature’s neck, rune enhanced fangs crunching straight through armor. He pulled the creature and dove under the waves.

Only the giant otter returned to the surface.

“Ah’ve had it with ya soddy dunderheids! Git down here and fight!”

Five more figures appeared in the sky from behind a cloud, thrusters on their boots and back keeping them in the air except for one made of pure light. A figure with a domed helmet filled with water dove towards the sea, the dome folding back to reveal tough, leathery skin and shark-like features. Meanwhile, the being of pure light raised their hands, firing a barrage of fiery plasma from the sky.

The Otter King dove back under the waves and began to evade the bolts. Meanwhile the shark-like being swam towards him from below, fast as a torpedo. A wicked, glowing blade extended from his gauntlet.

The blade shattered on the Otter King’s fur.

The Otter King placed a paw on the shark being’s chest, a rune appearing. The rune sucked water into it from the Otter King’s side, and expelled it as a wire-thin jet that pierced straight through the shark being’s heart.

The Otter King then dove down to the ocean floor, grabbing the first stone he could find. He scratched a rune onto the surface, the rune flashing once then going inert.

He rose back and leapt out of the surface, tossing the stone at the glowing being.

The stone passed through them harmlessly.

And then the rune lit up and a flash of blue light filled the sky.

Along with an unearthly scream.

The rock held a simple enchantment, one that gathers nearby energy and converts it into light. A bit surprising, but ultimately harmless to living things. A glorified nightlight.

Unless said living thing happens to be composed of pure energy.

Once the flash died down there was no trace of the energy being remaining.

Two of the remaining armored figures looked up at the third floating above them.

“Captain, we’re taking heavy casualties!”

The captain grinned.

“Leave this one to me.”

The other two figures nodded and rose into the sky. The captain grinned and held out his hand. Purple light gathered, forming a glowing sphere with lighting crackling around it.

The sky roared as the captain fired the sphere into the ocean.

The Otter King simply ducked under the waves, tucking his head into his stomach.

A massive plume of water filled the air as the sphere shot into the deep and exploded. The Otter King soared through the air, curled into a furry ball that hurtled into the sky.

“Got yae!”

The Otter King straightened out, swinging his fist towards the captain…

And the captain caught it without flinching.

“Huh, not as strong as I would have hoped.”

“What’s that?! Ah’ll show ye strong!”

The captain’s helmet folded back, revealing a human face…with veins and eyes glowing purple. The being made a wide grin with sharp teeth.

“Don’t disappoint me then.”

The captain pulled back his other fist and slammed it into the Otter King, sending him hurtling into the sea. The Otter King scoffed as he plunged into the deep, extending his paws out. Runes appeared on boulders resting on the seafloor, which then launched themselves up and out into the sky.

The captain barely moved, swatting a boulder away with the back of his hand. Several purple balls of light formed around him and began to fire down at the Otter in the depths.

The Otter King shot through the water, dodging the spheres as they shot into the deep and continuing to fire boulders up at his attacker. As he did he tapped each of the purple spheres with his paw, a rune flashing on each one just before it exploded.

When the last sphere exploded the Otter King spun about, pointing his paws towards his attacker.

Massive runes lit up the ocean, one appearing at every location the spheres had exploded. They moved through the water, forming a circle, and began to spin…

The largest bolt of lightning the world had ever seen pierced from the ocean to the sky, blasting the captain with all the power he had fired into the sea.

The captain grunted as he lit up, his eyes glowing bright…

And then the lighting was absorbed into him, his body taking on a purple glow.

He grinned down at the ocean and lifted his hand.

A streak of purple lightning shot straight into the Otter King, blasting him into the ocean floor.

The captain dove forward, diving into the deep. He grinned as he approached the ocean floor.

“Still alive are you? You’re a tough one, I’ll give you that.”

The Otter King rose from the deep and scoffed.

“Tough? Ah’m invincible!”

“Is that so? Still…with that level of power you are no match for my psionic might.”

The captain held out his hand, more spheres of energy appearing in the water around him. The Otter King heaved a sigh.

“Ah hoped ah’d never have to use these again…”

A large rune appeared in front of the Otter King’s paw…

The captain fired the spheres forward…

A barbed, black spear made of serrated bone rose out of the rune.

The Otter King grabbed it and thrust at the spheres. Barbs extended out from the spear, piercing each of the spheres and dispersing them without a trace.

The captain’s grin grew wide.

“I’ve been looking forward to this. Your little world has quite the legends, does it not? I wanted to see if any of them would turn out to be true, and here we are. If I’m not mistaken…that’s supposed to be the Gáe Bulg?”

The Otter King scoffed.

“That twig ah gave to that wee lass? Please.”

The Otter King lifted the spear and tossed it at the captain. The spear cut through the water with ease, adjusting its course to fly straight at the captain’s heart. The captain held out his hands and a barrier of purple light appeared before him, so dense and bright it seemed more like solid matter.

A sharp, grinding noise cut through the deep as the spear collided with the barrier, sparks hissing in the ocean water. The captain grunted as the spear cracked through the barrier.

He added several more layers.

Still the spear continued on.

His smile began to drop.

The sparks began to slow…but still the barriers cracked.

And the captain…sighed.

The spear cracked through the second to last barrier…

And then stopped.

“For a weapon of mythology, I’m a bit disappointed.”

The Otter King shrugged.

“What legend did yae read?”

The captain sighed.

“The Spear of Mortal Death, made from the bone of some legendary sea monster, guaranteed to penetrate the target’s armor and skin before filling every one of their joints with barbs. Guaranteed, extremely painful death. But this one failed to even reach my armor.”

The Otter King smirked.

“The humies love ta exaggerate. But they all missed the point, as did yae, yae lout.”

“Oh?”

“The spear ah gave to that wee lass was forged from a bone of a monstah. Just one bone. So…what do yae think ah did with all the rest?”

The Otter King stretched out his paws…

Countless runes lit up the ocean.

And barbed bone spears appeared in each and every one.

The captain grinned and began creating his barriers.

The spears shot out into the deep, each swinging around to target the captain’s heart from a different angle.

The captain vanished under a storm of sparks as the spears assaulted his barriers.

And then…

The sound of bone ripping through flesh.

The last shreds of the barriers faded into sparks of light, the captain now a pincushion of spears.

And it wasn't over.

Each spear burst into innumerable barbs, filling every joint and organ of the captain with barbs. Purple blood filled the sea from the countless holes in the captain’s body.

The Otter King sighed. He really didn’t like to use these anymore…

And then the captain began to laugh.

“Yae still alive? Yae a tough one, ain’t yae?”

“I wouldn’t say that. I can’t believe these were able to pierce my barriers or my enhanced skin. Weapons of myth indeed. Just goes to show how wide the universe really is…”

The being exploded into a cloud of purple mist, leaving behind bone barbs and shredded armor.

And then he reformed a short distance away, new armor growing out of his skin.

He cracked his neck.

“But that only works if I need my joints and organs in the first place.”

The captain vanished.

And then appeared in front of the Otter King, driving a fist into his stomach. The Otter King didn’t flinch as he grabbed another spear and stabbed it towards his opponent.

The captain’s body twisted into a mass of glowing fibers. They opened up a hole in the spear’s path. The spear hit nothing.

“I read some other legends too, you know. One about the Dobhar-chú and its invincible pelt…”

The Otter King stabbed once more as the captain kicked at his side. As the fibers opened another hole, the Otter King stopped his strike so that the spearhead hung in between the man’s body. The spearhead exploded into barbs, firing into the surrounding tissue.

Small holes opened up all over the man’s body, the barbs passing through them harmlessly.

“And it seems to be true. You indeed seem incredibly resilient to damage…”

The captain grabbed the spear with both hands and pulled. Fibers twisted into a third arm as the Otter King flew forward.

He slammed the bottom of the Otter King’s chin with an uppercut.

He grinned as the Otter King cried out in pain.

“...except for a small spot on your chin. The one spot you’ve been protecting this entire battle.”

The Otter King did not respond. The captain sighed.

“Well, looks like playtime’s over.”

He grabbed the unconscious otter and rose into the sky. The other two armored figures were waiting for him, holding a large device in their hand. It looked like a laser cannon, only in the center of the weapon was a large transparent sphere with a miniature galaxy spinning inside.

“Do it.”

They charged up the weapon. The Otter King started to come to, shaking his head. He glanced at the weapon ahead and scoffed.

“Heh, yae might pack a mean punch, but what do yae think that wee contraption will do…”

A teal beam fired into his chest. His eyes widened.

“Ah crap…”

A teal light flashed around the Otter King and then he was gone.
