Chapter 8: The Temple of Shadows

Chapter 8: The Temple of Shadows

The journey toward the mountains was long and exhausting. As they drew closer to their destination, the air grew colder and thinner. Yet the sight of the towering peaks reminded them they were nearing the city of the wise, where they hoped to find answers to the questions raised by the shadows and the temple.

The boy and the girl didn’t speak much as they climbed, focused on conserving their strength and staying alert. The shadows hadn’t followed them from the temple, but the feeling of being watched never fully left them.

At last, after what felt like days of endless ascent, they reached the top of a hill from where they could see the city. There it was, hidden among the mountains, its ancient stone buildings covered in moss, yet still imposing. There was a strange calm in the place, a stillness that contrasted with the unease they had felt in the temple.

As they entered the city, they were greeted by a group of elders dressed in long, muted-colored robes. Their faces were serene, but their eyes reflected deep wisdom. The boy and the girl knew these were the wise ones they had been seeking.

“We know why you have come,” said one of the elders, his voice resonating in the cold air. “The shadows of the past are awakening. This is not a new matter.”

The boy and the girl exchanged a surprised glance but said nothing, allowing the elder to continue.

“The shadows you encountered are not simple. They are remnants of an era before the magic you know. They belong to a time when the world was ruled by older, wilder forces. Forces that some called the Guardians of the Shadows.”

This novel's true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there.

The boy frowned. He vaguely remembered his mother mentioning the Guardians in one of her stories, but he had never thought they were more than myths.

“What do these shadows want from us?” the girl asked, stepping forward. “Why are they chasing us?”

The elder looked at her with a serious expression.

“They are not interested in you,” he replied. “The shadows seek to awaken the ancient Guardians. For millennia, these beings have remained sealed in temples and ruins, but now, something is calling them back.”

The boy felt a knot tighten in his stomach. He realized they had stumbled upon something far bigger than he had ever imagined. The shadows weren’t the final enemy, but an echo of something more powerful trying to return.

“What can we do?” he asked with determination, knowing they couldn’t simply run from this problem.

The elder regarded them both with a sympathetic look.

“Your journey is just beginning. Every culture, every land you travel to will hold fragments of the truth you need. This is not something you can resolve immediately, but you must be prepared. There are more temples like the one you found, and in each, you will find clues about the Guardians and their true purpose.”

The girl nodded, and the boy felt a surge of determination. He knew there were no easy answers, but now they had a clearer mission. They needed to travel, learn from every place and every culture, and discover what these ancient Guardians and the shadows really meant.

“Go,” said the elder. “The road is long, but the answers are out there, waiting to be found.”

With those words echoing in their minds, the two young travelers left the city of the wise. They had learned that what they were facing wasn’t just a local threat but something with deep roots in the world’s history. They knew their journey would take them to many different places, each with its own secrets, myths, and dangers.

As they descended the mountains, they knew that the next stop on their journey would take them to the lands of China. There, perhaps, they would find the next piece of the puzzle they needed to understand the Guardians of the Shadows.
