Chapter 12 Orc Friend

Tenth day Eleventh Month Four Thousand six hundred and forty four rings of the Great White Tree

Crefyddol Orc Friend

He could hear the music playing at the other end of the camp but he had decided to eat near the orcs. Ever since the battle he had been called Orc Friend. He fought with the Orcs infact he had saved the Warchief life and in turn been accepted into the warband.

Before the battle he had been so certain of superiority of the Elven Confederation. He had been very vocal about not needing the savage orcs. Then the battle had occurred and elves had struggled to defeat the union army. He had watched the pride of the elves their famous knights fail to break the union soldiers.

He had watched as they had been betrayed by his own people. Then it was the orcs that had fought ferociously by his side and allowed the elven army to escape.

So now he sat with the orcs and watched as their aged shaman began tell their legends. The orcs took great pride in their legends. Stories about the conflicts which shaped orc culture.

The shaman was an ancient orc who provided magic for the warband. During the battle he had seen the shaman cast bolts of lighting at the union soldiers and then after the battle his healing magic had healed greviously injuried orcs.

He mused that he was probably centuries older then the Shaman. For the orcs had such short life spans. The old shaman might only be sixty years old.

The Shaman began the story. He spoke in the Orc tongue. So the Warchief translated the story into common. Their were a few elves listening to the tale.

The Old Rhinyll who given him the task that had led to his friendship with the orcs sat under a tree to side of the camp. Listening intently to story. Cot Las also sat alone. His past affinity with the traitorous Prince Teynfradwr kept him seperated from the rest of the elves in the army.

As he rested his back against a tree he listened to what the Warchief was saying. This tale it seemed began with the slaughter of forest devil's. There certainly were alot of tales about the slaughter of forest devil's or forest devil's invading the orcs homeland.

The hero of this story was an ansestor of the Warchief. A legendary hero who helped bring together the seperate tribes of the orcs. He thought on that fact. Shouldn't the Warchief hold a important role back on orc empire. Why was he here leading this mercenary band here in the confederacy.

The story continued it was about Öldürmək çətin the leader of some forest devil's that had escaped a trap that the Warchief Intiqam Firtinasi had devised to defeat the invaders.

The devil's had retreated deep into the wastelands that the orcs called home. The Warchief sent out his best hunters to track the devils.

Finally caught up with devil's who had taken over a water hole. They had killed the great Timsah which gaurded the water hole.

From the description the great Timsah was a beast with many teeth that loved to swim in the water hole and occasionally preyed on the animals that drank at the water hole.

Intiqam and his warband had attacked the devil's but they could not dislodge them from water hole. The Warchief then explained that their prays for assistance were answered by their gods. When an ancient blue dragon was sent to lend them a hand in defeating the forest devils. The Warchief described how the ancient dragon landed amongst the devil's and started attacking them.

The Warchief was describing the colour of deep blue scales that covered the dragon. The old Rhinyll helped him translate into both common and elvish tongues.

The dragon apparently forced the devil's to flee the water hole. The orcs had used this opportunity to attack Öldürmək çətin as he escaped and as a result he had killed many orcs.

The Forest devil's then sought refuge with the gnolls. He had heard that gnolls had a demonic background so that made sense.

He had read that the origin of the gnolls could be traced back to a time when the demon lord Yeenoghu found his way to their world and ran amok. Packs of ordinary hyenas followed in his wake, scavenging the demon lord's kills. Those hyenas were transformed into the first gnolls.

He had read gnolls were fierce warriors. Indeed the Warchief and his warband were wary of attacking the tribe. Eventually the forest devil's fled the gnolls and the orc warband followed them.

The story continued and told how the orcs had lost the devil's to barren mountains unable to track them. So the Warchief made the decision to meet up with Canavar Paketi.

Before the war he didn't know much about the orcs and their homeland. But even before his new found friendship with the orcs he had heard of the wolf riders.

The Canavar Paketi the elite dire wolf riding cavalry of the empire. The Canavar Peketi were feared and respected throughout the known lands. These fierce orcs formed a symbiotic relationship with their mounts.

In the tale the shaman told how the leader of the Canavar Paketi met up with the War chief Intiqam Firtinasi. Before he would pledge his support he needed Intiqam to prove he was worthy.

Intiqam would need to tame a with his bare hands auroch. Auroch were large horned beasts that survived in large herds in wastelands. Some said these beasts were the ansestors to the cattle that the humans tamed and farmed.

Intiqam found a herd of auroch and then approached the large bull who todominated the herd. Intiqam grabbed hold of the bulls neck, narrowly missed getting gored by the large horns on bulls head.

Intiqam and the bull then struggled for three days in a contest of strength and willpower till finally the bull surrendered and accepted Intiqam as his master. Intiqam was then able to place a bridle and saddle and he rode the bull back to villiage of the Canavar Paketi.

The Canavar Paketi agreed to join the hunt for the forest devil's. So the wolf rider packs were sent to track down the forest devil's.

Under moonlit night the Canavar Paketi finally caught upto the forest devil's. In a short volient battle. They engaged the devil's. The Shaman described how the leader of the forest devil's personally killed a number of the Canavar and their wolves.

The explained that leader of the forest devil's was called Öldürmək çətin which was a translation of hard to kill.

Finally the Shaman worked up to the finale of the story when the leader of the forest devil's challenged the Warchief to duel.

As he listened to Shaman describe Öldürmək çətin as he approached the Warchief he realised that the Shaman was not describing a denizen from the nine hells who escaped to the mortal realms but a elven knight.

The Forest devil's he realised were elven raiders. Not the demonic beasts he had previously believed them to be. He pieced together the story and realised that the Forest devil's could only be elves.

For who else lived in the forests next to the orc wasteland. It was this forest and it was his people that the orcs called forest devil's.

His people called the orcs Savage's and the orcs in return named the elves forest devils. Centuries of conflict and bad blood.

Now for first time in their history the two races were in an uneasy alliance.

He made his mind that he would be true to his name and become an friend to the orcs and help cement this alliance.
